Maintaining microphone preferences

Running the newest MSN Messenger 6.0.0602, is there a way to set
microphone preferences up outside of Audio/Video Tuning Wizard?

I have a laptop with a USB camera / microphone that I will plug in as
desired. But, everytime I unplug the USB device (or boot my laptop
with the camera unplugged), if MSN Messenger is running (which it is
because I always start the program on start-up) my microphone always
defaults to the built in sound card microphone. Thus, after plugging
in the cameram, if I forget to run the wizard I'll do an audio call
and find I have no mic. Then I exit audio, run wizard, and restart
audio.

What I am looking for is someway to have a "preference order" on the
microphone such that I can set it up for USB camera mike, then
built-in sound card mike, then none.

Perhaps this is a feature request :)

Any ideas?

Yes, this type of scenario has been a problem for awhile -- unfortunately there's nothing you
can do about it, except by running the Tuning wizard each time.

A feature request indeed =).

Yeah, add my vote for this feature request.
I am on a desktop, everytime I start messenger I have to reselect my USB
digital headset.
