If the pawns are doing their flickering thing, then it is at least trying to connect and then
failing. You're right that usually this is a software firewall blocking the connection
before it's fully started but since you don't have a firewall that won't be the issue.
Since you're able to connect after the fact, I'm wondering if it's a timing issue with
something else. You're not using a USB network card/cable modem by any chance?
Additionally, do you remember what kind of update this was -- Windows update, Messenger
update, etc.? There haven't been any updates to Messenger 7.0 in over a year.
