I have tried reinstalling MSN Messenger version 7, several times, to
no avail. This problem started a few weeks ago, when Microsoft offered
a update. I am running windows Me, which does not allow for a newer
version.

The "pawn" shaped icon flickers and then there is a red x. I can click
on it and then it works. I can still access messenger, but I wonder
what is causing this problem.

I am not running any firewall.

Greetings,

If the pawns are doing their flickering thing, then it is at least trying to connect and then
failing. You're right that usually this is a software firewall blocking the connection
before it's fully started but since you don't have a firewall that won't be the issue.

Since you're able to connect after the fact, I'm wondering if it's a timing issue with
something else. You're not using a USB network card/cable modem by any chance?
Additionally, do you remember what kind of update this was -- Windows update, Messenger
update, etc.? There haven't been any updates to Messenger 7.0 in over a year.
