My Windows Live Messenger v. 8.5 restarts frequently. Every so often, a
message pops up saying that a messenger was started on another computer
(even when 2 other comps on my network are off). What's wrong? How to
prevent messenger from restarting?

Greetings,

Assuming you're using Windows XP, this could be Windows Messenger in the background being
started.

To make sure this doesn't happen again, you can remove your saved Passport.Net information in
your Windows account so it can't sign you automatically. To do so, click the Start Button,
then click the Control Panel. Then, click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select the
Windows account name in question, and then on the left side of the screen, under Related
Tasks, click 'Manage my Network Passwords'. In the window that opens, click the
Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry and click 'Remove'.

Jonathan,
thank you for your suggestions. Your presumption is correct, I have WinXP
Home. Long ago, I have Windows Messenger disabled in the Add/Remove Windows
Components applet. Nevertheless, I checked User Account, but there were no
Network passwords...
So, Live Messenger pops up again...

Hello Ilyaz,

Then, think about a different person who might know your Windows Live ID and
its
corresponding password, which would mean that each time that you get such a
toast
"You were signed out because you have signed in at a different place.", the
other
person would have signed in using your credentials.

In order to test this out, you could simply change your password and see
whether
the issue is gone thereafter. To change your Windows Live Account password,
do the following steps:

1. Navigate to https://account.live.com/SummaryPage.aspx
2. Log in using your Windows Live ID and your (old) password.
3. In the middle of the 3 columns, you find an entry "Password: ******
[Change] "
4. Click the "Change" link, and enter your old password as well as a new
one.
5. Finally, click on [Save].
6. Then click on the top-right "Sign out" link under your name or Windows
Live ID.

Now sign in to Messenger with your Windows Live ID and the changed password
and watch for those toasts to reappear. If they don't show up again, the
issue is solved. =)

Let me know what is the result of this action.
Regards,
mynetx

Hi,

Well just unchecking it in Add/Remove Windows Components does not remove Windows Messenger,
it just removes the shortcut.

However, if there's no saved Passport information, then that certainly isn't what's causing
it.

Thanks for your suggestion. However, I doubt that there is someone who knows
and uses my Windows Live ID and password just to run WLM. Changing my ID
etc. is such a hassle, I'd rather avoid it.
Of course, if there is no other way around this problem, I'll follow your
suggestions. Thanks for the detailed instructions.
