Hi, ever since I installed Live Messenger, my computer will invariably reboot
itself suddenly soon after starting Messenger up. I get a message when I log
on again, saying my system has recovered from a serious error.

When I send the Error Report to Microsoft, it fails to open up the error
help screen as usual, so I had to type this into a browser:
http://oca.microsoft.com/resredir.aspx?sid=10&Bucket=0xc2_7_nt!IopDeleteFile%2b17e&State=1&ID=09b6161b-f3b2-455f-9f08-6295689c752a&PerfThread=1000&PerfSendQueue=0&PerfRecvQueue=0&LCID=1033&OS=5.1.2600.2.00010100.2.0

Apparently, these two files are bad:
C:\DOCUME~1\MSTEFF~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER62ba.dir00\sysdata.xml
C:\DOCUME~1\MSTEFF~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER62ba.dir00\Mini102006-03.dmp

And here's an Error Signature:
BCCode:c2 BCP1:00000007 BCP2:00000CD4 BCP3:00000000
BCP4:8621218C OSVer:5_1_2600 SP:2_0 Product:256_1

Can someone PLEASE help me out here? I'd even be happy with a link to an
older 'pre-Live' version of Messenger.

Thanks!

Greetings Steffler,

Here's MSN Messenger 7.5 (pre-Live) as you requested:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ca6b2c02-7c1c-4e3a-8d2b-4fcef7485c14

Unfortunately OCA really doesn't provide much detail to solve the problem. However, do you
have a webcam plugged in? If so, try unplugging it before starting Messenger and see if that
solves the problem.

I don't have a webcam to unplug. Why did you think it would be a webcam?
Maybe there's something else along those lines I could try.

Hi,

If Windows is blue screening than something in kernel mode (like a driver) is the one
responsible for the crash. Anything in usermode (like Messenger crashing itself) will just
cause the "Sorry for the inconvenience, this program has been shut down" dialog.

Messenger enumerates your audio/video devices when it starts and therefore is the reason I
first mentioned a webcam. Of course it can be anything from your sound card to display
drivers.

If you'd like to send me an e-mail, when I have a spare minute I can guide you through
determining the exact cause of the crash. In the meantime, try downgrading to 7.5 just to
make sure that works.

Yes, I would like to downgrade! How can I find the latest version of
Messenger that existed before Live Messenger came out? I will email you,
thank you very much for your help - I really don't have the expertise to be
going deep into my system and messing around. I'd do more damage than good,
lol!

Hi,

Sure thing. The version right before 8.0 can be found here:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ca6b2c02-7c1c-4e3a-8d2b-4fcef7485c14

Which is 7.5.0324 if you're interested.

messenger sucks! by Andrew

I can't believe microsoft would release software which causes such serious issues. I had the exact same problem after installing the new messenger. No warning messages, the computer just shuts off immediately, causing me to lose all work. When windows starts up again, it attributes the problem to a bad driver. This can not be as no new drivers have been installed on my PC since it was purchased, this problem appeared only after installing windows live messenger. After uninstalling live messenger, the problem disappears. unbelievable
