Dear Sir/Lady,

My IBM ThinkPad T42p laptop PC comes with Windows XP SP 1 Professional and
Internet Explorer 6 SP 1 preinstalled by IBM.

I am using the latest version 7.5 of MSN Messenger and when I click the
Handwriting tab in the Conversation Window, a message pops up saying that in
order to be able to see and use the Handwriting feature, I should install or
update software in my system. Clicking the Help button in this information
window opens the MSN Messenger Help window and subsequently clicking the link
for users of Windows XP or Windows 2000 (Service Pack 3 or later), I am
transferred to the Windows Update web site.

As I have never updated either my OEM version of my IBM preinstalled Windows
XP SP 1 operating system or my Internet Explorer 6 SP 1 software ever since I
purchased my ThinkPad in late August 2004 and I have now found out that there
is a total of 35.7 MB of various updates that can be automatically downloaded
and installed on my system from the Windows Update web site, I would like to
know for sure if this is indeed the reason the Handwriting tab in the MSN
Messenger Conversation Window does not appear or if the cause of the problem
is something different.

In the former case, do I have to install the entire number of 35.7 MB of
updates to solve the problem? Can the installation of just one or just a few
a them work equally well for this purpose so that I can leave the full
updating process for later? In such a case, could you please tell which are
exactly these necessary updates which can solve the problem?

If, on the other hand, the problem has absolutely nothing to do with the
updating of my operating system and browser, what do you think is its cause
and what should I do then in order to be able to see and use the Handwriting
feature of MSN Messenger?

Thank you very much in anticipation of your cooperation and support and I am
anxiously expecting your reply as soon as possible.

Best wishes for the New Year!

Hello,

Handwriting requires the Windows Journal Viewer update, it should be listed
under recommended updates.

However I'd *strongly* recommend installing Service Pack 2 and any critical
updates it lists since then.
