I am beginning to get the disturbing impression the MSN 7 is the 900 =
pound gorilla. I have been following posts regarding 7's install =
problems along with problems with auto sign-in (My current issue) other =
device failure, lost contacts, lost files and other issues. It almost =
appears that the cage was open and the gorilla got out and now its in =
the room with us and we can't get it back into its cage.
I had successfully used 6.2 for sometime and downloaded 7 when prompted. =
My machine is a P4, 640 1GB DDR2, w/XP PRO/sp2, with automated updates. =
So the machine should be able to handle the program. After downloading =
and installing 7, I could not sign-in. Could still use Messenger =
(Windows). Uninstalled & reinstalled and then downloaded again and =
installed again and was able to sign in. I could not use my camera. =
Yea, latest drivers, on the list, all of the requirements. Still I had =
to uninstall the cameras software and then reinstall before 7 "could see =
it". =20
I shut down and restarted and 7 would not auto sign-in. Followed all =
the posts and tried all reasonable suggestions including deleting all =
app files and "s" files in registry in Protected Storage System =
Provider. After restart all appropriate files were regenerated but =
could still not auto sign-in. So I uninstalled 7 and went back to 6.2 =
and now was not able to auto sign-in with 6.2 either, and I got the same =
silly prompt to download 7. Went to JK site and downloaded 6.2 ver. =
without prompt. Then since I had wasted several days on the issue, =
decided to scan some sheets and e-mail them to my son. Office doc. =
scanner could not initialize the scanner. Camera wizard could but =
office couldn't. Uninstalled and reinstalled Office and no joy. =
Pondering on a course of action, I was surprised by a pop-up that the =
AVG virus program was out of date. Again that was setup on auto update.
I could not connect to the site and when I was able the program refused =
to download the update. Decision made.
Dumped Office & AVG and did a XP repair without format and then =
downloaded all updates and service packs and reinstalled AVG and updated =
ok, then Office and clicked Office Doc./Img. Scanner and it initialized =
the scanner. Shutdown/restart and still could not auto sign-in on 6.2. =
So in a fit of absolute stupidity I downloaded and installed 7 again, =
assuming that if a solution was available MSN 7 would prompt for its own =
update. This time I was told that my passport account was not valid =
which seemed strange since I could use a laptop, wireless routed to the =
same cable line and get on Messenger.
Back on the desktop, I could not get through to Passport to reestablish =
my account. Established a second passport account using hotmail and was =
able to send password change requests to alternate account and using =
original account address reset passwords. Now I have two passport =
accounts, neither of which will auto sign-in on either MSN 7 or =
Messenger, but from which I can sign-in to either 7 or Messenger =
manually.
The disturbing thing is that when encountering problems in the past with =
issues, I was able to go to a specific news group and with a search or a =
new post find previously posted solutions or someone with a workaround. =
On apparently new problems, a few weeks would go by and there would be a =
publication issued with a solution. That does not appear to be the case =
with 7.
I have to say that during the last several weeks following this group I =
have seen responses from intelligent & dedicated people but it appears =
that 7 has changed the normal problem/solution dynamic. Solutions are =
elusive, suggestions are tentative and successes are limited, and there =
is and obvious absence of publications with concrete corrections to =
problems listed in the recent posts.
Something bad happened to my machine when I initially downloaded and =
installed 7, and I am afraid that the only real solution is to boot from =
my XP CD and format the drive and start over. That is a difficult =
choice to make, but may be necessary if there is not soon a correction =
forthcoming from MSN.
I apologize, for this is a vent only and I don't expect a response, but =
do expect over the next several weeks to see posters begin to resolve =
troublesome issues as people poke their noses into the registry and file =
system and pick out the "bugs" that don't belong.
