    - Messenger, Windows Messenger, MSN Messenger... what's the diffenence? There appears to be three different applications. How do I know which one I should use for video conversations with only one other person? Is there an advantage of one program over the other? I have XP with sp1 and I downloaded MSN 6.0.0602. I also see that I have Messenger 4.7.2009 on my system. I see from services that there is an application call Messenger. What is the difference in these three programs and which on do I want to use?     - MSN Messenger 6 Registry Values Hi, I'm working on a Windows "cleanup" program and one of the portions of it is to allow people to clean their received files folder. This isn't particularly a problem with the older versions of messenger and I have it working fine, but with the introduction of MSN Messenger 6 and the ability to save chat history a few wrinkles have been introduced. I would like to be able to figure out which "number" key that is a subkey of "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger\PerPassportSettings" OR "HKEY_USER\<SID>\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger\PerPassportSettings" is related to the current user or the user currently logged in to MSN Messenger. Even a key that gives a list of these numbers would be handy. I am interested in this because I need to get the "log directory" and make sure that it isn't wiped out without the user's consent.     - Can't stop alerts I know that there is an option to turn of the alerts that you received new email while signed on the messenger. I can click, unclick, click or unclick other options, and the alerts will NEVER turn off. No matter what I've tried, the little box still comes up that says I received a new email.     - can't establish voice conversation Hi, I have win98, and recently I was connected to ADSL. Before that I had dial-up moden, and I was able to make voice conversations with other computers. As soon as I installed the ADSL, everytime I try to invite someone to Voice, it is unable to connect to the other computer, saying "unable to establish connection" or something like that. our computer cann't communicate.     - Messenger 6 I upgraded to messenger 6 (I am on win98) and if it has been running for more than a couple of minutes when I try and start a conversation or someone trys to start one with me I get an error message saying "unable to start conversation". Any ideas - I have downgraded back to MSGR 5 and the problem has gone away - I was told by a friend that Microsoft released a slightly different version after the first v6 to fix some problems but obviously not this one.     - Messenger Sign In Problem Hi, I have successfully downloaded and thought installed MSN Messenger.     - unable to connect to hotmail or msn messenger My ADSL (LAN) connection is working fine - I am able to access sites on the internet, my provider email, download music etc. BUT I CANT sign into msn messenger or hotmail. I get the message "page can not be displayed" or msn messenger tells me my passwords are wrong.     - Installed MSN Messenger - cannot remove Window Messenger Hi, I'm running XP which came with Windows Messenger. I downloaded v6 of MSN Messenger but this didn't upgrade Windows Messenger.     - Error code 1601 ok I have tried reintalling the Windows installer from http://tinyurl.com/76c3 It fails I also tried running the: %systemroot%\system32\dllcache\msiexec.exe /regserver Both Fail In the above %sysroot% instruction it failed - so i created an alternate directory inside systems 32 and created a folder named dllcache1 and copied the mwsiece.exe into it,and ran - %systemroot%\system32\dllcache1\msiexec.exe /regserver I rebooted and the program ran without errors, but I still get the installation error of 1601 Are there any particular services that need to be running for this to work?     - MVPs...check this out....WinMessenger 4.7 problem with MSN messenger 6.0 hello...this is long but important.please read carefully... I have windows xp home edition. I have installed sp1. the following were preinstalled... 1. MSN explorer 6. 2. Windows messenger 4.7 Every time i re-install windows i see to it that i download the update for windows messenger which it notifies me when i sign in. But then i heard of msn messenger 6. thinking that it will replace windows messenger on installition, i downloaded it. I signed out from windows messenger and exited it from the system tray. after installition i restarted my machine. but icons for both messengers appeared in the system tray! moreover when i would use msn explorer it would sign-in in win messenger and not msn6 and it would also not let me sign in using msn6. so from add and remove programs i deselected windows messenger. that simply removoed access to it. in its directory it was still present. From www.dougknox.com i came accross a tip . it asked me to type a command in 'RUN'. that thing deleted all files of windows messenger. MSN messenger remained as ususal. But when i signed in in MSN explorer it asked me to re-install windows messenger again. I tried to repair msn explorer by reinstalling it from 'add and remove windows components' from 'add and remove programs'. but it said a file msgsc.dll was missing from the messenger directory. i found a similar file in the MSN messenger 6.0 folder and copy pasted it to the old windows mesenger folder and it worked! now i was able to use MSN explorer and MSN messenger 6.0 both, but the 'intregrating factor' was lost. now i could not make msn explorer or outlookexpress automatically sign in to the messenger like before. the sad part is that www.dougknox.com doesn't say anything about re-installing windows messenger. So i want MSN messenger to 'take over' Windows messenger. The MSN messenger 6 website does not mention anything about its compatability with xp even after choosing the operating system properly before downloading. Is there a propr explaination for the confusion? will the update to windows messnegr 4.7 get me all (like associating a picture with my account) that msn6.0 has? is there any way to re-install windows messenger? system restore has been kept off :-( Please email me a copy of the reply u give to the thread at neeravkothari@hotmail.com . locating a reply over a dialup is a mess! thank you very much for your time.     - unable to sign in Hi, Ive just reinstalled windows XP on my laptop. Since doing so I am unable to sign into a particular passport account with MSN Messenger. My other acount works OK. I have reset password through the User accounts (that is not the problem), Im also unable to access the same account on my desktop computer, but I can sign in to MSN.co through the faulty account on both computers!     - Messenger 6 Quits at Login - XP I just got a new machine with XP Pro. Messenger was working ok for a while and then after I upgraded to V 6, it will not start up. Here's what happens: When you launch Messenger, it appears to login and show the normal screen for about 1/2 second, and then the window immediately minimizes into the system tray.     - MSN freezing troubles. Hey, A short while ago the msn messenger on my computer stopped working; it seems to freeze whenever anyone tries to log in. I'm sure my accounts are still active and I've read through the faq and failed at solving the problem. I have a windows 95 and I think 4.6 is the only version that works with it. (so I assume that 4.6 is what is installed on my computer) When I downloaded it again the problem persisted. Is 4.6 no longer active or frozen, and is anyone else having this problem? I took my older Dlink Router DI 704P Rev A Brown Non Upnp off connected directly to Cable Box Still not working. I put a new Microsoft MN-100 Router installed it only to find it still had no effect on this but fixed my Shuttle PC. Before I changed the router my Shuttle PC with onboard sound had the opposite effect it would send but not receive. Since the new Microsoft MN-100 that machine is working I finally had a conversation with it. One thing I notice trying to get this working, with an active voice conversation in process I can hear the Shuttle but the Shuttle cant hear me if I go into the Creative Mixer / Speaker section and do a speaker test the center is much lower and no sound from rear left and right then if I kill the audio in Messenger 6 Creative's mixer works fine.     - *****FIX**** Resetting Display pic/background pic Ok, in looking around i see a small amount of people who seem to be complaining of MSN 6 not saving their display pic/background pic.... in researching, i looked on the forums for Messenger Plus! 2 for anything on the issue and found several users there complaining of the same thing.... the resolution found on their forum was to sign out, then exit, rather than just exiting as MsgPlus will cause a forced exit (basically a process kill) of MSN, thus not allowing it to save the settings, but if you log out of the service first, then it saves. this was proven to work for the Display picture, but not garunteed to work on the background picture... for the background picture to stick, they reccommended exiting MSN 6 (doesnt matter how), then ctrl-alt-del and click on the process tab and "end process" msgplus.exe, then reopen MSN 6 (all the plus features will be gone temporarily) and set your background (this will also work for the display picture, if above method doesnt work) the way you want it (including redefining the default), exit MSN 6 again, to save the settings normally (msgplus isnt running to force close MSN) then restart msgplus by going to your /Messenger Plus! 2/ directory and double clicking MsgPlus.exe then restart MSN messenger 6 and enjoy your newly defined background and display pic!     - OE6 Losing mail? Hotmail linked. HI, I have my outlook express linked to receive my hotmail email and I can see in the 'bulk' list of hotmail - where I try to screen out spam, emails and then they very quickly dissapear before I get a chance to read the header fully . i then check my Hotmail account outside of and having closed outlook, but there is no bulk mail?     - Rename contacts On MSN 6, as showing the list of users on my contact list, the nickname is made by the user.. However I wanted to change the user name to other name of what I want to type, so I know who are they... Instead of the nicknames or email address showing..
