Is there a reg setting that I can change to prevent users
using MSN Messenger?

All users must have local admin accounts for Bespoke
company apps
They are also due to restrictions not in place (and again
we cannot put them in place on the firewall because of
applications needs etc) so they are always able to
download and re-install if we were to remove it
1000+ users

using a Novell Backbone but XP OS on the Workstations - so
i can push down a reg change upon login but if they
reinstal;l obviously this will recorrect it - so I can
eith make a reg change and they will have to reinstall
every day, or I can shedule the reg change to be pushed
out several times daily on a schedule - all help
suggestions much appreciated

Greetings Damian,

This key will do it:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/disablemessenger.reg

This will only work with Windows Messenger 4.x/5.x or MSN Messenger 4.x, it will not have any
effect on MSN Messenger 5 or MSN Messenger 6, so if users can install this client, this won't
help. You might find this helpful:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323525 (should work on XP). The MSN Messenger 5/6
executable is called "msnmsgr.exe" and Windows Messenger 4/5 is called "msmsgs.exe".

Many Thanks Jonathan, I have searched for TID after TID
and have searched the newsgroups but there are not too
many posts regarding the prevention of it - I have looked
at a lot of posts you have sunbmitted but no change, one
more quick question - Am I correct in believing that the
local messenger service does somehow intergrate with MSN
Messenger, not necessarily the way messeges are sent, but
it intergrates with other MSN Messenger Client
functionalities?

Hi Damian,

It depends what you mean by "local Messenger Service" -- if you mean the "Messenger Service"
listed in the normal Servers in 2000/XP (Start/Run/services.msc), this is in no way related
to MSN Messenger neither integrates with the other (no functionality is added by removing
either), they're completely separate.

That was what I meant - thanks for confirming that it does
NOT have any connection with MSN Messenger - the reg key
you supplied will not owrk due to the OS and Client Ver of
MSN Messenger - I am trying to modify the reg now based on
the URL you also provided - obviously backed up the reg
first - will post how I get on, if you do think/find of
another way around client ver 5/6 please post - Many
thanks for your time on this matter.

Hi Damian,

The reg file should work on any recent Windows OS, from Windows 95 to XP.

MSN Messenger 5/6 don't have system polices keys for this, unfortunately.

Joanathan, I have seen loads of praise on here for you and
I am about to heap some more!!! Thank you thank you very
very much - the regedit setting you gave via the URL has
worked, Surprised I could not find a TID like that - not
only does it prevent running of the MSN M Client it also
opens up a lot of other options for us from a Technical
opint of view!!! Because after resolving this, the next
stage in the rollout project was to disable..now wait for
it: Yahoo Messenger, AOL Messenger, Kaza - the list is
(Without swearing) endless - I really cannot thank you
enough as you have saved me hours of searching for
resolutuions when this can resolve it in one, as this reg
key will be pushed out to workstations on the network and
associated to each individual workstation - it will not
matter which user logs in!!!

Once again many thanks from me here in London
