Hi all,

I am using MSN messenger for video conferencing to my family in a
different country. I am connected through a 768/128K DSL at home and
they use a regular 56K modem. So far I am satisfied with the
not-too-bad audio and video.

Now there is an opportunity for them to switch to a DSL line too.
However, in the country they live in, they have to choose one of the
128/32K or 256/64K connections. Obviously, the latter is more
expensive.

Here are my questions:

1) If they go with the 128/32K connection, how different will our
video conferencing experience be? Will they see and hear me *much*
better because of their 128K download and my 128K upload?

2) What about the experience on my side? They will have 32K upload, so
will it be worse than a regular phone line connection? A question at
this point: What is the average data transfer rate for audio and video
at the same time over a regular phone line?

3) If they go with 256/64K option, how much quality improvement should
I expect for both video and audio?

Thanks very much in advance,
Serdar.

Greetings Serdar,

1. I assume you mean 32K upload here. I honestly doubt you'd see much change.

2. Realistically, your connection is only as good as your lowest connection, as such, it
most likely will be the same, a 56K connection typically won't see more then 32Kbps upload.
They should be able to see you a tad smoother/high frame rate then they've experienced so
far.

3. You would see a small improvement I think, but not a big improvement.

One thing to keep aware of is if this DSL company they'd switch to provides an external IP
(that is, one that's publicly accessible), as in some countries its normal practice for a DSL
company to "share" IP addresses and as such, use a NAT to "share" a single IP between users
(which makes video conversations very difficult). You typically see this in Europe/Asia.
