Hello :)

This is a strange one. I can't establish a voice chat
with a friend that's using the XP ICF. I was under the
impression that the ICF opens all the neccessary ports
for MSN, but from some reason it seems to be failing to
do this. We have absolutely no problems establishing a
voice chat with Windows Messenger - everything works
perfectly - but for some reason MSN doesn't want to "play
ball". We're 100% sure the ICF's at fault here because
when it's on we can't make a voice connection, when it's
off MSN's voice chat works just fine. Also, out of all my
contacts he's the only one using the XP ICF, everyone
else uses different software firewalls and I don't have
any problems with them :-/

Anyone got any ideas as to what might be causing this
problem?

(We're both using the final version of MSN Messenger 6.)

Hi there!

its not that MSN doesn't want to "play ball". XP ICF is a firewall that is
intended to protect the personal computer. When turned on, by default, all
bad traffic is opened. If you are an administrator on your PC (in XP Pro) or
a regular user (*not* the Limited User kind) on XP home edition, you would
be able to use MSN Messenger and make A/V calls. In this case, only the
necessary ports for A/V streaming are opened.

Let us know if you are able to make calls now!

Hi Vishal!

My friend is using a regular XP Home account with
administrator privileges, not a limited account. As I
stated in my initial post, the audio/video in his Windows
Messenger works perfectly from behind the ICF, the a/v in
his MSN Messenger 6 *does not*.

The ports aren't being opened for some reason.

Oh, Sorry. Missed that. Its surprising to hear that Windows Messenger can do
A/V fine but MSN Messenger cannot. (Personally, I have been using this
almost daily with my ICF turned on. Works like a charm). He can find out if
his ports are being opened or no by looking at properties of his network
adaptor | Advanced | ICF Settings. You will see MsnMsgr as an entry. if you
see so, it means that XP ICF ports have programmatically being opened.

Can your friend receive A/V calls from other buddies?

Vishal,

When he launches Windows Messenger the ICF does create two
"msmsg" entries, one UDP and one TCP. But when he launches
MSN Messenger the ICF does not create any entries for
"msnmsgr" whatsoever.

I cannot answer your question about him being able to have
audio/video chats with others because I'm the only one he
talks to online, sorry.
