    - MSN Messenger 7.0 - Too much wasted space I recently installed MSN Messenger 7.0, and there is one thing about it that I really don't like. I noticed that there is a lot less vertical space due to the extra area used at the top and bottom. Although these areas existed in the previous version, they did not use as much space. This makes it hard to show much in the content area, which is very frustrating. This is probably less of a problem on higher resolution monitors, but since not everyone has top-resolution monitors, I think we should have the option of hiding the area at the top (I understand that the ads must be shown, even though I don't always like them). I also think the contacts icons are lower quality than they used to be (although I could be wrong about this, they just look lower quality to me).     - Freezing I've been using the beta for some time without problem. Several of my friends have run the upgrade and it is working for them, but mine freezes about five seconds after launch.     - Cannot start conversations Hi, I've had the problem where I cannot start conversations with anybody on my computer. I also cannot see any display names for the people on my list (instead I see a tiny box where there name is, and if I let my mouse hover over it, I see their name/email))... Can anybody help me???     - Can't connect with messenger 7.0 It seems that a lot of people are having problem with messenger 7.0 The program works fine at home, where there is no firewall or anything. At work, messenger 6.2 used to work fine. With 7.0, I can't connect. It doesn't freeze, but it just does not connect.     - BIG TROUBLE After Installing MSN Messenger 7.0 I made the mistake of manually downloading and installing MSN Messenger 7.0 this evening, rather than waiting for MSN Messenger 6.2 to inform me that an update is available, and letting it download and install that way. Boy, am I sorry!? Somehow, the installation of 7.0 lost my entire Contact List and lost track of the automatic sign-in I had established for 6.2. As of now, I have no idea how to recover my lost contacts list.     - crashing every (MSN) messenger on XP SP2 and video capture card Well, just installed release version MSN Messenger 7.0.0777 and went to the audio/video tuning wizard immediately. WinXP SP2 still crashes in trying to connect to the Hercules Video Action! video capture card :-( Prob is persistent with MSN Messenger 6.2 , 7.0.0429 beta and now 7.0.0777. Also tried the Messenger 4.7 version coming with XP, AND even the update 5.1.0639 Same prob exists, XP reboots when trying to capture video. MSN Messenger 4.7 / 6.2 ran fine on W2k SP4, and no hardware changes whatsoever were done when (clean) installing XP. Also the Hercules frame grabber card works fine in *any* other app accessing it, it's *ONLY* (MSN) Messenger crashing into bluescreen when trying to use it, so I wonder what causes the prob. Even tried the solution of deleting the %appdata%\microsoft\MSN Messenger folder too (hey, whatever does the trick is ok with me...), but to no avail :-( System is a mobo VIA Tornado Pro 233 (MS7177) with Intel PIII/1000 and AGP NVidia TNT2 64 and network card Realtek 8139. (and the Hercules Video Action frame grabber card of course) Looks like some software fault in MSN Messenger to me since *all* apps accessing the frame grabber card work fine and *only* (MSN) messenger crashes XP completely. Several error reports were sent after the rebooting of XP, the "standard solution" coming back is a "device driver error". (err reports 15106750, 15125039, 15141274, 15142076) If so I wonder why *all* other apps can acces the frame grabber without *any* prob whatsoever, why it's *only* (MSN) Messenger crashing.....     - Freezes behind firewall... At work behind my corporate firewall messenger logs in and freezes almost immediately, I must kill task to close. I move my laptop outside the firewall it works fine. I take the same laptop home and run it behind my home firewall and it works fine as well. What makes it really bizarre is that I've been using the 7.0 beta for several weeks without a single problem. But installing the release version today and it won't work right. Though I assumed it wouldn't work I tried deleting the app directory indicated in other posts. As expected messenger continues to freeze when I'm behind the corporate firewall... Any ideas? Firewall configuration changes? Messenger registry hack?     - Major layout problems in MSN messenger 7 I installed MSN messenger 7. I now have an ad at the bottom of the messenger window, which i can't hide or get rid of, indicating i should try MSN messenger 7. This is just silly I also can't get rid of the search bar. I dont want to search from messenger. I dont like having the bar there. I like the light, simple layout of older messaging clients, where i could disable functionality i dont want. Here's another one. To get rid of the tabs, which i dont want, i had to go into the security settings. Here's another. Even if i dont use an icon, the space for the icon is still used at the top of the messenger window. Same with personalized text. Same with My Spaces. Same with MSN Today. I understand you think these features are valuable. I really have no intent of trying them out, and would like to have the option to make them disappear. Here's a bug: if you have the window frame up, then when you resize the window to be more narrow than the top menu bar, the inner messenger pane gets short (since 'Help' wraps to a second line). However, if you have the window frame hidden, the entire messenger pane (now the only visible window) still resizes when the now invisible menu bar wraps. Since the menu bar and outer frame are hidden the user sees the window get shorter inexplicably. Poor user experience. I can't click in the contact area and pick how i want to sort contacts. I have to unhide the frame, go to contacts, then pick the option i want. The default layout for chat windows is too busy. Even after disabling stuff that has no use for basic conversations, i still have - * Text indicating i shouldn't give out my password or credit card number in an instance message conversation. Nevermind the fact that i and almost all my friends have been using the internet since 1993, and all have 6 digit icq numbers, etc. Can you please expose an option to disable this text? I dont care if it's buried. I know better. * Text telling me that some new feature lets me see and hear my contacts instead of typing. Some of my friends i'd rather not see or hear you know. It's cool that you have this new feature. I dont mind if i have to look at it once to see what it is. I'd rather not see if every time i try and talk to someone. * A search button in the chat window. That's nice that you want to promote MSN search. No, i dont think that is a reasonable way to do it. Let's think about user experience - i'm chatting with someone, they know i'm typing because you guys made this neato feature that lets them see that, and now mid conversation i'm going to decide to search for something? Then I installed it on my laptop, also running WinXP
Home. When it finished it required a reboot; I shut down
all my apps and restarted. When it came back up to log in
to WINDOWS it no longer accepted my password. It just
came back with the "The system cannot log you on..."
error.

This has never happened before.

PLEASE HELP!
