Hi CJB,
Messenger "accounts" are based on e-mail addresses that have been signed up as
Passport/Windows Live IDs (same thing).
In order to log into Messenger, you have had to create an account as a Passport/Windows Live
ID. If you need to see this address, open up the main Messenger window by double-clicking on
its icon in the notification area, then right-click the icon in the notification area and
choose Sign Out. Your e-mail should now be displayed.
That address is the username you use to log into the link I have given you earlier and I
assume you know your password. Then you can get it verified.
To address your other concern, Messenger does have an echo canceller but so does Skype and
personally I find them around the same quality-wise. But be aware, if you and your contacts
aren't using headsets (or at least headphones), there's going to be some degree of echo,
regardless of what product you use.
