I have had the same problem all day today. I have re-installed Messenger 8.1,
but nothing has changed. I even Restored the System to a day earlier, but
nothing has happened. What can be done?

I managed to get mine working, and it's been fne ever since. I found a
website called webmessenger.com or something (can't remember exactly but
googling should help find it), and it let me login to messenger from there,
confirming that it was not my internet connection settings but my (actually
non-existant) firewall.

Then my own messenger automatically logged in, and everything has been fine
since. I have no idea what happened.

I'm having the same problem since yesterday.
These are the facts:

The problem started all of suddenly without any software installation or
operating system/firewall configuration.
The problem happens on all three computers in my home. So I discard the
possibility of misconfiguration or machine specific issue.
The problem doesn't happen at my work or at the work of my brother in law.
So I don't believe this to be a problem in the MSN network.

Two days ago I downloaded some stuff from e-mule. So, without any scientific
experimentation on this, I suspect my internet provider (Tiscali) blocks some
ports after we spend some bandwidth with P2P applications. In result, it may
be blocking some port required by Live messenger. I would even go deeper and
sasy that is the same port used to transfer advertising without which
messenger will simply not connect.

I may be talking bullsh*t here by tomorrow the ports will be unblocked and I
will probably have access to the Live messenger again.

Kind regards,

Hi People having this problem.

I have been having the 80072745 error message for two days now and have not
managed to find a way stop it after following all of the steps i could find
to resolve it until now.

It seems that the whole port blocking ISP thing could be something to do
with it because i took the following steps and it now works fine :D.
NOTE: I assume that this will only work if you have a dynamic IP address
assigned by your ISP.

Disconnect your router from the internet, re-connect it, checking that you
have been assigned a different IP address to the one you had before, and your
problems should be a thing of the past (mine are now).

i had this problem for over 3 days! For no reason my messenger started
throwing that error at me AND I FOUND OUT HOW TO FIX IT.

First i tried reinstalling it multiple times.. didn't work.
Then i even tried a clean install of vista... didn't work.
Then as a last ditch effort i went on to portforward.com and looked for the
guide that tells you how to forward ports on your modem (mines a netgear
DG834N). I forwarded 3 or 4 ports then tried and IT WORKED!

go on www.portforward.com, select your modem make, then follow the guide and
you will hopefully be back online within minutes!

Mine seemed to fix when I unplugged my router and plugged it back in. Must
have been something to do with my DNS...not too sure.

i am 99.9% sure that it is ports being blocked by either your isp or your
modem/firewall. For some reason my netgear blocked those msn ports one day,
and when i forwarded those ports the problem was solved... I tried many
different dns servers and that wasn't the issue for me.

at all exept for timesof the days it wont sign in at night but during the day

I had the same issue. If you have a ISA client...turn it off temporarily and
login and it will work.Once logged in you can turn the ISA client back on and
you will not be logged out. This is what worked for me.

cheers,
