Help? No video using camcorder w/MSN
Hi all-
I have my camcorder set up to send video. I use headset/mic for the
audio portion & use "video conference to send.
For some reason, we cannot get my uncle's laptop to see us. He gets a
black screen on his end- the MSN audio works fine, so there's a good
connection there.
The video works with others so I know it functions properly- even to a
friend in UK- & my uncle is only two hours away.
We're both on cable behind wireless routers. I'm assuming it's
something on his end as mine works otherwise.
Any ideas? Help?

Audio Problem - Edge Of Insanity
Firstly, my apologies for such a large post, but since it's not exactly a new
issue for the newsgroup, I wanted to be as complete as possible in order to
give readers the best chance of assessing my problem and suggesting a
resolution.
Here are the salient facts regarding the current system configuration
followed by a description of an all too familiar problem relating to audio
(note that MSN Messenger 6.2 or 7.0 Beta both encounter the same problem and
both have been removed an re-installed several times) :
Network : wired network comprising a Netgear gigabit switch which, for the
purposes of this problem, has a single PC attached. The
switch also
has a Netgear WGE111 wireless bridge connected into it
which
wirelessly links to a Netgear WGT624 v2 wireless-capable
router at
another location. The router in turn is connected to a
Motorola cable
modem and then out to my cable broadband feed from
Telewest, a UK
cable provider and ISP.
Local PC : - XP Professional (upgraded from XP Home) with SP2 and all
automatic
updates applied
- XP Firewall active with MSN Messenger listed in the
exceptions and
the scope set as "any computer (including those on the
internet)"
- nothing is ticked under Services or ICMP in the XP
Firewall Advanced
settings for the LAN connection on the local PC
- "Allow Incoming Echo Request" is the only item ticked
in the XP
Firewall Advanced | ICMP settings screen
- Norton Antivirus installed, up-to-date and active
- Netgear gigabit NIC
- QoS Packet Scheduler completely uninstalled
- Windows XP uPnP service running
- Windows XP SSDP service running
- No other software firewall installed - never has been
- The Internet Gateway item in the Network Connections
has nothing
listed under "Services"
- The Internet Gateway item in the Network Connections
has no port
forwardings listed
Netgear WGT624 router : - latest firmware installed (v 4.2.6) which for
me has
fixed a widely encountered
reboot issue (the router
has been up for days now)
- uPnP compliant and has uPnP
activated
- NAT enabled
- SPI firewall activated
- Receives a DHCP assigned IP
address from the ISP
- No WEP enabled
- No port forwarding or triggering
enabled
- No site blocking in place
- No amendments to factory
settings for MTU,
preamble and so on
- Set to not respond to ping
requests
- Kept outside the DMZ
Netgear WGE111 bridge : - latest firmware applied
- No WEP enabled
Access to the internet from the PC works fine in this configuration, at
least for web browsing, email and gaming, but an MSN Messenger audio
conversation cannot be initiated with a remote user whose setup has just
recenlty been proven to be fully working. He is running XP SP2, is on an ADSL
broadband connection behind a NAT enabled uPnP Belkin router and has
successfully held audio conversations through
MSN Messenger with other parties as part of this investigation so as to
eliminate one setup as being problematic. Of course, the remote machine could
still be the cause of the problems somehow.
Here is a list of observations and symptoms :-
- MSN Messenger shows that the PC is behind a uPnP symmetric firewall and
that
a direct connection has been made (administrator)
- the MSN Messenger Audio and Video Tuning Wizard has been run
- Using Windows Messenger at the local end and either MSN Messenger or
Windows Messenger at the remote end results in a successful audio
connection
- standard text message features work fine as do some of v 7.0's additional
goodies such as winks and nudges
- the PC can receive video from the remote user's web cam, but this is no
clue
since video uses a relay server and audio needs a direct connection
- file sharing works fine at both PCs
- the local PC can receive files
- the Messenger Whiteboard facility will not work, regardless of which end
initates the activity
- the router's uPnP port map shows ports opening when an audio
conversation is
initiated; the IP address associated with the ports is that of the PC
running
MSN Messenger
- disabling the XP Firewall seems to have no effect on this problem
- ports opened by MSN Messenger were closed by completely restarting
MSN Messenger inbetween tests
- for invitations from the local machinke to the remote machine, MSN
Messenger
informs that it's trying to connect to the remote machine, but the
remote user
doesn't even see the invitation and the attempt times out
- for conversations initiated by the remote user, the local PC receives the
invitation, but upon accepting the attempt to connect it just times out
and the
remote user sees no message regarding the local machine's acceptance of
the
invitation
- the PC can be used for online gaming with products which supposedly
utilise
uPnP (e.g. EA Games' "Battle For Middle Earth")
- it is not possible to downgrade to Messenger 6.1 as per afh3's post in
09/2004
since Messenger now forces an upgrade to 6.2 when it's run
I have read through countless posts on many sites and have attempted just
about everything suggested therein. Following this trawl of the net, it does
occur to me that I am not 100% sure that uPnP on the Netgear WGT624 router is
free of any defect which might cause the problem.
Unsurprisingly, Netgear Support refutes that there are any uPnP defects on
this unit under the latest firmware. A sure-fired test of this aspect would
probably be a good first step. It has been suggested to me that since the
local PC can host online games such as "Battle For Middle Earth" that uPnP
must be working ok, but I am unsure that this is a complete test and so
alternative suggestions on a definitive test are welcome.
I am not a networking expert, but the activity on the router's uPnP port map
table suggests to me that the router is opening ports and associating them
with the correct IP address for the PC. However, the MSN Messenger behaviour
indicates that whilst requests from the remote machine reach the local
machine, the responses by the local machine to that incoming request do not
reach the remote machine. In addition, requests from the local machine do not
even seem to reach the remote machine at all.
I assume that if the local router is correctly opening ports and sending the
invitation out to the remote machine then these would be seen at the remote
end, but it's not seen at all. Does this indicate that requests from the
local PC are not being sent out from the router at all, that they're not
being handled correctly by NAT, or that they're not being correctly handled
by the remote machine ? How can I investigate this aspect in more detail ?
Many thanks in advance for any help offered. I would be extremely grateful
for any additional ideas as the resolution of this problem has become an
obsession, one which threatens to see me commiited to an institution soon
(twitch twitch).
Best regards, Nick. Tag: 81000314 Tag: 63863

DISPLAY PICS DONT WORK
i put a post up here before and Jonathan Kay told me to do this
It sounds like your display picture "cache" of images has
been corrupted. To fix, click
Start, then Run, then type:
%appdata%\microsoft
and click OK.
Right-click the MSN Messenger folder and choose Delete.
After all this, restart Messenger
and see if the problem has been corrected.
but when i do i get this error message
windows cannot find '%appdata%\microsoft'. You may have
typed the name incorrectly in the Run dialog, or another
open program cannot find a system file. to search a file,
click the start button and then click search.
what should i do now? Tag: 81000314 Tag: 63855
bigger contact list when msn messenger 7 final comes out
the msn beta team who are working on the final of msn
messenger 7 said that a larger contact list is coming out
when msn messenger 7 final comes out. even though contact
limit has nothing to do with the client(as its server
side) they're still going to increase it. not sure by how
much though. Be great if it is 250 contacts.
Tell the msn team what the maximum number of contacts on
ur contact list should be in msn messenger 7 final by
going here:
http://support.msn.com/contactus_emailsupport.aspx?
productkey=messenger&ct=eformfree
There is no mention of Offline messaging though. So email
the msn team and tell them u'd like an offline messaging
feature(like icq and yahoo have). Tell them why u want it
to. I would really like this. it'd be so much easier than
having to log into hotmail. Tag: 81000314 Tag: 63851
MSN Messenger and Norton Personal Firewall 2005
Hi all ...
Say ... got a free copy of Norton Systemworks and Personal Firewall
with Office 2003 and decided, against my better judgement, to check it
out.
So far it actually seems to be working okay (although I much prefer the
way McAfee is set up) -- with one exception.
It seems like it blocks all my "auto start" programs that need web
access at start-up -- MSN Messenger, GMail Notifier, etc.
Now I can start all these programs manually, but they won't start
automatically at bootup.
Anyone run into this and found a fix?
Thanks!

[Bug found] Messenger 7 and smooth scrolling
I have an Intellimouse Explorer 4.0 which have a smooth
scrolling whell:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/features/tiltwheel.mspx
this wheel is influenced by velocity: with a similar
log(n) function, if i scroll slowly, the page scroll
single line by single line, if i scroll faster, the page
scroll more line a time.
This type of scrolling (very useful) is NOT supported
in the MSN Messenger 7 contact list.
I have many contact listed, and with my wheel, both
I scroll very slowly and I scroll faster, the list go down
3 lines a time.
This is veeery irritating.
Please do something to correct this issue.
Thank you.

problems with video behind firewall
I am trying to set up MSN Messenger to use my Canon Elura 60 DV camera to
send my dad video (he doesn't have a camera, he just receive only). I have
a Linksys router, it has uPnP forwarding but I'm really not certain how to
use it (or if I need it where I'm not receiving any incoming video). My
dads router is some abomination from his Florida phone company that's not
particularly intuitive and doesn't appear to have uPnP, so he just forwarded
port 6901 (which according to post #2937 located here
http://www.canadiancontent.net/forums/about2554.html is the video port). We
don't care about audio, only sending my outgoing video. When I connect to
him, I get a message saying there is a technical problem and I've been
disconnected.
This works fine with AIM, but I'm limited to a 2"x2" video and I'd like my
parents to be able to see a much larger video (new baby here). Any help or
alternate application suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Tag: 81000314 Tag: 63821
