Msngr not seeing capture card cam (sort of)
I have a video camera connected to PC via capture card. I
can get camera footage showing in the preview window when
I use the A/V Tuning Wizard but when I select Options/Web
Camera Settings, it says Messenger can not detect a
camera. Also, When trying to start a Video Conversation,
Messenger rejects it with 'camera in use or not plugged
in'. Firewall was turned off.
Why does the Messenger A/V Tuning Wizard show the
camera's output but I can't seem to use it in
conversations?

Audio Problem
I know this has been hashed 1000 times but here's the problem . I
have a friend in Florida that I cannot recieve audio from. The video
works fine. He is on a dialup and I am on DSL. I have XP Pro and he
has XP home edition and is not using any firewall. He is using the
new Logitech pro USB cam with mic. He is able to setup MSN Messenger
6 just fine at his end but as of yet we cannot communicate vocally.
He does not have anyone else to test with.
Now here is the clincher. I am using a UPNP router but have no
problems with audio or video from my other friends.
Any help in this problem would be greatly appreciated.... Tag: MSN Tag: 36957

problems with launch site
I've just recently started having problems with playing
the launch site games on messenger 6.0
I've been getting an error message about not being able
to install activeX components, but before you tell me to
change my settings in internet explorer, I've already
done that, but to no avail.
The thing is, this is only a recent problem, in that in
only started happening around a week ago, and everything
had been working fine before then.
I have installed a new game or two in the last week, but
I don't see how that would affect messenger. Does anyone
have any idea on what I could do?
I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling messenger,
but that didn't seem to work either.
Thanks,

Messenger 6, 6.1 audio problem on XP
I've been experiencing some peculiar problems with the

tried disabling QoS and enabling UPnP on my router, and my

way the audio connection works with Messenger 6 is if he
initiates the conversation and I accept it with Windows

Can't get versions above 4.6 to connect via small home network
I have a small home network with internet sharing software (PPP Shar) on an

machines access the internet via the XP machine. Messenger is used a lot on
one of the 98SE machines but we cannot get versions above 4.6 to work. 4.6
worked fine but we need to upgrade to a newer version. They install OK but
when trying to connect with any version over 4.6 a message comes up saying
that they cannot connect and asks us to check our internet connections. If
we connect the 98SE machine directly to the internet, by-passing the XP
machine, versions above 4.6 load and connect OK. I have tried disabling our
firewall but that makes no difference. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks. Joe. Tag: MSN Tag: 36853

Msn won't connect
Due to some confusion over threads (one of which I can't see) I'm starting a
new one in hopes of an answer. I appreciate this is probably bad nettiquette
but I have a extremely annoyed user who can't connect to MSN and is
breathing down my neck to get it fixed.
My original post is below. NeoSadist suggested using a windows 2000 machine
but that is not an option. We have 60 machines in the building - at least
half are NT4 and are all running MSN and working without problem except this
one machine.
We don't have the licensing to upgrade it to 2k nor would the court admin be
willing to do so just cause messenger won't work. He's rather remove their
net access completely.
Anything else I could try before the pain of complete re-format and
re-installation would be greatfully appreciated

User has a NT4.0 machine - windows patches are all up to date, messenger is
version 5.0 which I believe is the latest for NT
We connect to the internet via a linksys router - the other 55 people in
the building connect to messenger just fine. There is no firewall at
present.(long story)
User can sign into the hotmail web pages, check her hotmail and everything.
What we can't do is log onto messenger. The error is the one about unknown
email address, incorrect password, or can't connect to the messenger
service.
I have tried with my login information as well with the same result. I have
tried in administrator mode as well which made no difference. I have tried
uninstalling and reinstalling to no effect.
The system date and time is correct, I know we are inputting the correct
password, I have tried changing it on the website (that was successful) but
it didn't help. I have cleaned IE of all cookies, cache etc. I have checked
all the security options as found in another thread. I even set IE's
security to the lowest possible in hope. no joy. I have reregistered the
softpub.dll with no luck.
I can telnet to messenger.hotmail.com 1863 successfully however when I try
and telnet to msgr-cs1.msgr.hotmail.com 1863 telnet locks up - not sure if
thats a different issue or not. I rebooted the computer between after all
these changes as well just to make sure but still doing it
Last thing I did to the machine before it stopped working was run Ad-Aware
6. I have checked its quarantine logs but I can see nothing to do with msn
in there, I did do a reg hack to try and kill Gator but thats the only odd
thing I can think of.
Any help would be greatfully appreciated

Windows Messenger Hijacks MSN Messenger 6
I have a large group of people that I've either built
systems for or upgraded and insist on Windows XP Pro on
all of them. The machines are meticulously updated but
there is usually a variety of hardware (nothing ancient).
All of them start out with the latest update to Windows
Messenger, and in addition to that, I load MSN Messenger
6.0.0602 for the enhanced video conferencing.
I am able to do a "Remote Assistance" session with all of
them because Windows Messenger takes care of that aspect.
All of the machines are set up almost the same with MSN
Messenger differences only with respect to whether it
starts automatically, signs in automatically and minor
things like that. Most start automatically and sign in
when a connection is detected (for the few AOL users).
I am having a problem on ONE of the 25 machines. It is a
Dell Pentium 4 1.8GHz, 512MB RAM that has been
reformatted to XP Pro like the others. It is also
connected to AOL. MSCONFIG shows that MSN Messenger 6 is
the only messenger service that is supposed to start up
on boot. However, once MSN Messenger is loaded, detects
an Internet connection, and signs in, it is immediately
hijacked by Windows Messenger, which is running in the
background for some UNKNOWN reason. Other users see him
as signed in, but there is no Windows Messenger tray icon
(MSN gives a "been signed out notice and stays in the
tray with an "x"), and only Task Manager shows the
recalcitrant msmsgs.exe running in the background. There
are no references to launching Windows Messenger in the
Start-Up or Registry. Uninstalling Windows Components
(Windows Messenger) and reinstalling, and doing the same
with MSN Messenger does not fix the problem. No matter
what happens, when MSN Messenger successfully signs in,
it is followed within seconds by Windows Messenger taking
over.
What is the problem here? This is the only machine
experiencing this bizarre behavior. The machine is in top
condition otherwise. Thank you. Tag: MSN Tag: 36839

connections probs with msn 6.0 and higher
i am currently running MSN Messenger v5.0. It is working
fine. When i tried to upgrade to version 6.0 and 6.1, i
found that i continually got the error message 'Sorry, we
were unable to sign you in to the .NET Messenger Service at
this time. Please try again later. 0x8100036f'. (I have
a screenshot.) I have been trying to sign -in on msn 6.1
for about 2 days now. Every person living in the same
college as me on the same internet connection is
experiencing the same difficulties.
Our network connection (LAN via AARNET) should not be a
problem - we have direct IP access through all ports except
http and ftp access, which is provided through a proxy
server. SSL protocol has not been a problem for other
services. Are there known networking issues for MSN 6.0
and higher? This appears to be a conflict between the MSN
protocol 6.0 and above and our network configuration, as
all other messenging protocols work fine eg. ICQ, Jabber,
AOL etc. Tag: MSN Tag: 36827
bluetooth headset in WinXP
We have been using bluetooth (a mitsumi Bluetooth device,
WIDCOMM bluetooth software 1.3.2.7) in Win2k and it works
nicely as voice device for MSN Messenger 6.0.0602.
However when we use the same device under WinXP the same
version number both for WIDCOMM/Mitsumi and MSN Messenger
it now gives us usable sound! (you hear something being
spoken but you can not deciffer the words...)
We have got feedback from WIDCOMM that tells us that we
should change the sound parameters. The value should be:
Channels = 1
SamplesPerSec = 8000
FormatTag = WAVE_FORMAT_PCM
BitsPerSample = 16
BlockAlign = 2
AvgBytesPerSec = 16000
When we do this with the sound recorder in WinXP it
sounds good...
So the questions are:
- how can we change these parameters for MSN Messengers
Voice part
- Howcome the default behaivour have changed between
WinXP and Win2k?
Looking forward to your reply,
:)Erik Tag: MSN Tag: 36821
