Please help with my contact list
My messenger ate my contact list. I'm sure that it
didn't go anywhere, the messenger is set to view
online/offline so everybody should be there. My contact
list got reduced from 32 to 6 people. I went to the
options menu and I can see the entire list of people in
the block/unblock list.
What to do?
Please help, it would be very inconvenient to re-request
people. Tag: any Tag: 28505
Cannot connect audio Messenger 6.0
Hi,
I've tried reading thru the newsgroup for solutions to this problem, but
haven't found the solution.
I've got a WinXP machine behind a wireless router (uPNP) which sits behind a
non-uPnP linux firewall / router. However, I'm not using the wireless
router as a router - rather I use it as a hub.
Now here's my problem. I am able to connect using MSN Messenger 6 fine to
another party via chat window. Similarly, I'm able to connect video (can
see his incoming video no problem). I can also do file transfers. However,
I cannot connect audio.
Whenever I try to initiate an audio conversation, I get an unable to connect
to remote computer message.
Can someone please point me in the right direction? Is there a special
protocol that MSN6 uses? Does it use h323 for the audio, but not for
anything else? (my firewall isn't h323 enabled). Or is it running on
special ports? Is there additional documentation I can
find somewhere about this?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Default web browser setting being ignored by MSN Messenger 6.0
Hi,
I've set my default web browser to Mozilla, yet whenever I
click on the "X new e-mail messages" link in MSN Messenger

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

Can't Log On
Somebody please help me. I can't log on to my MSN
Internet Explorer or use my MSN Messenger(the latest one
to reach my email at msn.com). When I try to log onto MSN
Internet Explorer it starts with attemt 2 and cycles
through 5 attempts before telling me that there is a
problem with my internet connection(there's not. I surf
everywhere using cox cable and Yahoo)or their service(you
bet!).
When i go to the msn.com page and am asked to register
with my net passport, I get two responses. If I try to
log in with my old user id and password, it tells me
neither one is valid. If I try to set up a new passport,
it will not let me view the page.
Microsoft is not very user friendly for tech help. I
can't find this problem described in the knowledge base.
And my computer was preloaded with msn internet explorer
making me ineligible for free tech support. I've tried to
download msn8 so I would be eligible for tech support,
but when I go to download the software, I get the you
can't view this page or some similar crappy page. I've
even tried to get paid help from Dr. Tech whose page I
can reach, but again, my computer won't let me do it.
HP support has been no help. Since March they have made
me do 10 non-destructive recovery and 1 destructive
recovery(the last one) all which work for several weeks
until the same problem with connecting with msn.com
internet explorer and my messenger service come up again.
I have been battling cancer since 2001 and my time is
precious, and I love my computer, but I lose so much time
reloading my purchased programs and am so stressed trying
to solve this problem that I sometimes think about
junking my pavilion. Is there some nice Microsoft
troubleshooter or independent computer geek that can help
me fix this problem?

MSN Messenger 6 & Trust Spacecam issue
I've installed the Trust 380 USB 2.0 Spacecam (Spacec@m)
(item number 13497) which appears to work correctly, as
verified in the Control Panel, and Netmeeting 6 Web Camera
Settings which shows a picture. Also using Windows XP with
all the latest Updates.
On selecting MSN Messenger 6 Tools | Audio and Video Tuning
Wizard, on confirming my Camera and pressing Next, I get:
Camera Error
The camera you selected is not working properly, or may be
in use by another program.
As far as I know, there is no other application using the
camera, except perhaps the drivers and associated software,
one of which could be Microsoft's own AMCAP 1.00, but when
this is running, I can't event get the Netmeeting 6 Web
Camera Settings to shows a picture.
Any help appreciated.

Messenger 6 crashes on start - Memory could not be written
Hi, im having troubles with Msn messenger v6.
Im running Windows XP Pro (1.6ghz amd 512mb DDR).
Whenever i start messenger, i get an error msg saying :
MSMSGS.EXE - Application Error
The instruction at "0x77f58e29" referenced memory
at "0x1d840ff6".
The memory could not be "written".
I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it.
Also tried browsing through this forum for some answers
but i didnt see any posts with this proplem.
It could be likely that this has something to do with
uninstalling Norton antivirus, i think the proplem began
around the time that i uninstalled it, but not sure though.
Any help would be appreciated. Tag: any Tag: 28478
Audio problem
Hi,
I am using Windows 98 SE & my friend using windows XP. We
both used to have a voice converstaion in the earlier
version of msn which is quite good from anyother voice
service provider & it was working fine. We received the
notification to update the msn messenger & we update both
side. Unfortunately our both side audio cann't able to
connect in the msn messenger 6.0, but the same time we
used to have a voice conversation in the yahoo messenger.
So, its clearly prove that msn messenger version 6.0 has
some problem in the audio section. However, both side
video & other functions is working fine. We have spend all
our knowledge to solve the above problem. But we did not
suceeded. Would anyone one of you please guide me to
solve the above problem? We appreciate your guidence.
Thanking you & regards (Mehboob) Tag: any Tag: 28477

Problem installing Messenger 4.6 into Win 98
Hello,
I set up Exchange 2K as a Messenger server, and I need to
install the client (4.6) on a variety of platforms,
including a few older Win 98 (SE) units. When attempting
to execute mmssetup.exe, on some of the W98 units I get a
Messenger 4.6 error stating "This installation cannot
complete because Winsock 2.0 (or later) is required." The
problem is that the machines are all running Winsock
4.10.1998.
I have tried removing the .dll, rebooting, and replacing
it, but it didn't work. I'm trying to avoid the time
involved of repair installs of Win 98, or upgrading to 2K
or XP.
Does anyone have any insights as to how to get Windows to
correctly read this .dll?
Thanks,

Can't start a audio conversation
Hi,
I have Windows XP and I'm using a Linksys BEFSR41 router
with the 1.45.6 firmware and a Linksys 10/100 network card
(NC100); I'm also using MSN Messenger 6.0.0602. I tried
to start an audio conversation with one of my friend and
we can't establish a connection. I have my PC set on DMZ
and all of my firewalls (including XP firewall) are
disabled. My friend has his cable modem directly
connected to his PC and he is using XP too (his firewall
is disabled). Every time we tried to start an audio
conversation it always fail. As a side note, we can start
an audio conversation if we both use MSN Messenger 4.7,
but it fails when one of us uses MSN Messenger 6.0.

Frustrated
I've used MSN Messenger for years, enjoying it as one of
the better messenger services out there. Until lately i
had a good experience using it, however i now find myself
frustrated and discouraged by the pop ups that i
receive. I've tolerated having to click them close
continuously. I've tolerated that they pop up even when
MSN messenger isn't turned on. I've tolerated them when
they pop up while all users are logged off of xp and the
welcome screen is up. I've tolerated this intrusion into
my space until yesterday when i sat down to find yet
another stack of messages to close, the one in the
forefront was offering for someone to provide oral sex
and various other sexual favors...
I am not a prude and I celebrate everyone's right to free
speech. However i also celebrate my right to choose what
comes flying up on my screen. I have preteen daughters
who don't need to have that pop up in their face either.
(these ads also pop up on their xp accounts even though
they have no access to MSN Messenger on their user
account.)
Being free to make choices i decided to uninstall MSN
Messenger from my computer. I was not happy about this,
as it is a program i use to keep in contact with many
people. Problem solved yes?
NO!
I sat down this morning with my extra dry breve and while
reading the morning news was greeted with more pop ups
from MSN Messenger. And now for the questions...
1. How do i rid myself of this insultingly invasive
program?
2. How can Microsoft condone this type of invasion on
their customers?
3. Am i the ONLY one who finds this unacceptable?

Where are my MSN Messenger ads? :)
I would never have thought I would ask that :)
But I believe my Norton firewall or AntiVirus might be blocking the ads, and
also getting me logged off when I first login to Windows XP Pro. If I solve
the ads problem, maybe I can solve the auto logoff when my
firewall/antivirus start.
It seems this MSN Messenger communication protocol is pretty complex. I saw
before that it requires tons of ports, why is that? The ads also seem to
talk on different ports.
Hey Microsoft, your ads clients won't be too happy that some people might be
blocking them, and still be able to use MSN Messenger. Tag: any Tag: 28324

Firewall ports
Will the help site be updates with MSN messenger data regarding which ports
it uses for what purpose?
I have recorded all the info from both the MSN Messenger site and the
Windows Messenger site (which MSN Messenger refers us to) and it just
doesn't work all the time.
MSN Messenger is constantly using undocumented ports for various activities
and i finally ended up giving it full access thru my software firewall
rather than continually hunting down what ports it is trying to use this
time for some specific purpose.
With the security history that Microsoft products have, i am reluctant to
leave it with access to all ports coming and going will be a very happy
camper when there is definitive documentation on this.
