My work situation

I'm a student and I'm on IT track. But for the moment I
have to take a clerical job to make a living.

I just started on this new clerical job in a family business
who has about 50 employees. My salary is paid monthly.
Roughly $100 per day. I was told I have one hour lunch, 15
minutes breaks in the morning and afternoon. and eight hours
a day. However, I have to finish all my work.

The work for my job turns out to be enormous. I have to
cut my lunch to 30 minutes, no breaks at all, and frequently
stay one hour late to get the work done. My co-workers who
have the same position are doing the same. But they seems
all fine with it. I never questioned them though since I'm
new. But I realize that we all might be needing the job and
the small salary that we don't want to say anything.

Do you have any of this in writting? If not, why not? You can either
negotiate a better deal for yourself, or threaten to sue over breach of
contract... If you start taking shit from people and don't have any self
respect... well bend over and get out the lube. Most people have to fight in
life, what's your excuse?

$100/8 hours = $12.50/hour or even $100/10 hours = $10.00/hour.... ask any
slub working at a fast food joint or bagging groceries if he'd like to trade
jobs with you.

Stay in school, get some credentials and qualifications THEN get a job that
pays you what you're worth.

You're whining about only having to work 9.5 hours a day. Get a real job you
slacker. If I only had to work 9.5 hours a day I could get a part time job
yet and really make some money. I could flip burgers or deliver pizza.
That's where the real money is.

It depends on how you look at it. Current economic conditions mean that
businesses are cutting costs which translates to more work per worker.
What people here are trying to convey is that it is tough all over.
You've also expressed a wish to enter the IT field where this has been
going on for a long time. We aren't on the employer's side but we also
aren't in a position to bargain -- the employer's hold the cards right
now. Unless you have some special skills that are in short supply, you
pretty much have to take what they dish. Clerical work is traditionally
scut work and they can find many people who will deal with your situation
without complaint. Try looking for ways to be more efficient or look for
work elsewhere doing something else.

Actually, it is a really bad business. Levitt wrote about it in
Freakenomics. Drug thugs in Chicago made far less than minimum wage.
(Which I way most quit by the time they reach 20.)

Let me see...

You should feel blessed that you are not out there making $10/hr landscaping
or doing construction. I did that when I was 15-18 and learned not only the
value of a dollar, but also learned to appreciate even the crappiest of desk
jobs. Here in D.C. there are tens of thousands of college students
performing internships and many of them are unpaid.

You are a student...you have little experience...and they are paying you to
do a job while giving you experience and something that pays a darned good
wage for a college student.

If it's really that bad, talk to a lawyer. You can always talk to him/her
about the FLSA (Google it). Remember that many companies have the
politicians wired. There is always a tradeoff in life.

I am a salary employee and I average over 60 hours a week, usually 70.
Approximately 45 of these are required client hours, then some company
hours. This is the norm for IT. In addition to that I study sometimes 2
hours a day and answer newsgroups ~1 hour a day. So, 12+2+1=15 hours.
Granted in some of the study and newsgroup hours I do laundry, clean up,
eat, etc.

I have worked for many a company where they were 1 or more staffers short
and 1 or more project managers short. Do you think that adds up to 90+
hours less work? No, the work is still there...the people already working
60 hours have to absorb that work. Why? Because there are hundreds of
people looking for your job. I had a manager that told us that he recieved
300 resumes for 1 opening. In the end he hired the best of the best from
that pile. She was a great co-worker and ended up being a manager and was a
great manager. She also looked like Daryl Hannah and all of us big IT guys
looked like her bodyguards. Seriously, people came up and asked us if they
could talk to Daryl.

Well The kind of situation u described is normally teh same in most of the
clerical job. They are not the good pay master but actually grill you from
front and back.

Taking any sort of decisionat this point of time will be too early nor I say
that you should not look for another job , but only quit the job , if you
have one in hand.

However I'll advice you to stick to it for a month or 2 take some experience
as i m sure, you'll learn alot and will not feel overburden in your new job,
