70-290 Exam and Training Materials
I just got done failing the 70-290 exam.
I've been studying using primarily the Windows Server 2003 Environment
Training Kit, published by Microsoft. I went through the entire book, did
all the practice questions - both in the book and on the CD, as well as some
other practice exams.
Funny thing... the practice questions all had something to do with the study
material and exam objectives. A large number of the questions on the actual
exam didn't.
I thought I was supposed to learn about physical and logical devices; users,
computers and groups; access to resources; managing a server; and disaster
recovery. But apparently, I forgot to study up on Visual Basic.
And was my test computer screwed, or do all the Microsoft exams have 1/2"
high screen fonts?
So now I'm left with the question, what the hell do I study?

70-290...
Hi everyone,
Just got a quick question for ya about this exam, any pointers? I have
taken the test twice and had not gotten any good results. It is not like I
did not study or anything, I took notes, worked with the programs such as
ntbackup, VSS, active directory, everything the books went over. The books I
read are Cram Exam2 and The Mananging and maintaining a windows 2003 server
environment by Microsoft. Just kinda at a hault right now, I am planning on
taking the test within a week, but anyone have any ideas on what else to
study for????????? (books, free exams)
Thanks,

OT: Infor for a Multi-Dim App
Howdy,
I am looking for an explorer style application that might allow me to view
files from different ways.
For Example, I have the following file structure.
C:\User1\Acct\Books.xls
C:\User1\Acct\Cats.xls
C:\User1\Purch\File1.doc
C:\User2\Acct\Books22.xls
C:\User2\Acct\Cats55.xls
I know I can go through the file structure and look at the file for each
user in the Acct folder. What I also want is to be able to attach files to a
virtual folder so I can simply type c:\Acct (or something similar) and see
all 4 accounting files. I guess you could say I am looking for a way to
group files other than the folder structure.
Any ideas?
TIA

OT: DFS/FRS Problem
Hi guys,
I've asked this question in the dfs_frs group but have had no reply as of
yet. I thought someone here might be able to help!
We have just setup a 2nd server ('Server2', win2k server sp4), which is
running DFS to provide fault tolerance to our main server. I setup about 20
or so DFS links, with DFS replicas. I.e. \\server1\sales which is master,
and \\server2\sales which was added as a replica. So far its replicated
about 15 or so of the links from server1 to server2 however its now just
stopped, and I can't get it to replicate anymore. The remaining 5 links,
have a few files inside which look to have been replicated, but not
everything. During the replication process I set SERVER1 as a root replica
of SERVER2, to make sure it was fully fault tolerant.
In the event log I'm getting: Event ID: 13508 Event Source: NtFrs Computer:
SERVER2.
There are 4 or 5 entries like this, 1 for each of the 5 folders it
hasn't replicated i.e. e:\data\rsgfiles e:\data\sales e:\data\it etc
Description:
The File Replication Service is having trouble enabling replication from
SERVER1 to SERVER2 for e:\data\rsgfiles using the DNS name
SERVER1.ourdomain.gb. FRS will keep retrying.
Following are some of the reasons you would see this warning.
[1] FRS can not correctly resolve the DNS name SERVER1.ourdomain.gb from
this computer.
[2] FRS is not running on SERVER1.ourdomain.gb.
[3] The topology information in the Active Directory for this replica has
not yet replicated to all the Domain Controllers.
This event log message will appear once per connection, After the problem
is fixed you will see another event log message indicating that the
connection has been established.
Now I can ping SERVER1 using its FQDN so I'm sure DNS is fine, FRS is
running on SERVER1, I've even stopped and restarted it, I'm not sure about
the topology information, it should have replicated, we only have 3 DCs (all
win2k) and all in the same room. I have looked on eventid.net for 13508 &
NtFrs and tried some of the idea there, including NTFRSUTL VERSION
SERVER1.ourdomain.gb to verify that FRS is running on it, I've run netdiag
/fix to correct missing DNS SRV records. And I've also re-installed SP4, on
it just to make sure.
Could setting SERVER1 as a root replica to SERVER2 have caused this? I was
getting a few errors saying the staging area was full which I think was due
to having some very large files (over 650mb). So I changed the regisry value
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Ntfrs\Parameters\Staging Space Limit
in KB to double the decimal value. Could this have caused it?
Any help greatly appreciated.

First Hurdle
Sooooo....
I have my Windows Server 2003 server up and running, and I have a
workstation running XP Pro. Both hooked up to a hub, and I've created a
user to log on to my test domain (CONTOSO.COM) as shown in the MS Press
70-290 book. Logging on and browsing my little network with no problems...
Stupidly, I upgrade my workstation with SP2 and everything goes to lala
land.
On the PC, I can ping the server (and the DNS name) with no problem. On the
server, pinging the workstation I get "Request Timed Out". On the server, I
can browse down to the domain, double-click the workstation, and it tells me
I don't have any access rights to that computer...strange, as I'm logged in
to the server as a user in Domain Admins.
On the Workstation, I browse to the domain, but upon double clicking the
domain I get;
"Contoso is not accessible. You might not have permission to access this
network resource. Contact the adminis[blah]. The list of servers for this
workgroup is not currently available."
Although the user I'm logging in as is a member of domain admins on the
server, and administrator of the local machine. Since I'm at the the very
beginning of learning about Server 2003, I'm not really sure what I'm
looking for, as I've never experienced this problem when logging any client
(98, 2K, XP) to our old NT4 network at work...
I have removed SP2 from the workstation to no avail. Link lights are all up
on the hub and no errors (seemingly) from the network cards, so I'm a little
lost and stumped as I can't continue my study until this is fixed...

OT: File Archiving?
We have a general P: (public) share on our server which acts as a dump for
people to share files. Its become quite large and I'd like to find someway
of moving files into a holding directory for a month, then being able to
delete them.
Does anyone know of any software that can search files based on last access
date, then move files over a certain age into a holding area ready for
deletion? If possible I'd like the directory structure to be recreated here
as well, this way people can easily see which files are theirs.

Delegated zones - question for an MCSE or MCSA..
A practice test that came with the MS Press 70-291 book says the
following, and I'm not really convinced that it is right, so I'd like
to hear an mcse's opinion:
A dns server that is hosting a delegated zone must also contain a
secondary zone for the parent domain, so that computers in the
delegated zone can resolve names for hosts in the parent domain.
(that's my convoluted wording, not the book's)
I don't see why the secondary zone would be necessary. Computers in
the delegated domain would just ask their dns server (ie, the one in
that delegated zone) for the address of a host, and that dns server
should just perform recursion as usual, whether the destination host
is in the parent domain or anywhere else in the world. Am I wrong?
Thank you! Tag: passing? Tag: 149456

New MCSE Student
Hi all,
I've just started studying my MCSE (starting with the first of the Core
exams 70-290). My workplace is unwilling to pay, so I've decided to self
study and get out of my "go nowhere" job.
As a noob (although I've been in the IT trade for about 8 years, from
Helpdesk through to NT4 and Wink2K Server installs, network design and
upgrades etc), I wondered if any of you guys had some insights and
suggestions, pitfalls to watch out for etc.
I'm self studying from the MS Press books and will only do courses if I have
to (like I say, I'm funding it myself). I'm hoping to do roughly one exam
every 2 months. Do I have a time limit from when I get my first exam to
when I get my last?
Any insights you guys and gals can share would be most appreciated.

70-299 Advice

has anyone had any luck passing this exam? I have just failed it for the

got 675. Gutted. Thing is, I can't figure out where I am going wrong, I
know the material, I've been using it for years, and studied hard, and for
the life of me can't remember doing a question where I was completely stumped
for an answer.
Got to wait two weeks now before re-sitting it again......how depressing....
Be happy to hear peoples thoughts on it?

No one can tell exactly. Just get as many correct as you can and hope for
the 'PASS' word to appear at the end of your exam.
Hope this helps.
