I have 2 pcs at home, I installed server 2003 on pc1 with IP address:
192.168.0.5, the domain name is aero.com and windows xp on pc2 with ip
address: 192.168.0.7, I used a d-link router to link them together.
my questions are: 1.when I tried to ping the pc each other, why it doesn't
work?
2. I tried to join pc2 to the domain aero.com,
it showed me " can't find the domain"
my understanding is they are on the same network, should be able to ping
each other, can anyone please help me out, thank you very much in advance.

Hi iTek,

Are you trying to ping IP Address or domain name? Without waiting for an
answer I would counsel you to look at your DNS settings because it is the
easiest thing to fix and the most common cause of problems. If you are
pinging IP Address without luck then it is not DNS.

Once you can ping IP address try joining the domain using the NetBios name
rather than the FQDN.

Good luck!

Can you ping your router?
Have you configured the IP address on each machine correctly so that the
default gateway is the router and the subnet mask is a class C subnet mask?

Have to agree with LRM. Sounds like you might have the IP's in different
subnets. Are you using your router to do DHCP? Or did you config the IP's
yourself?

Wait one minute... Did you install active directory on your server??? If you
installed AD on your domain, and then have the server doing DHCP, then you
have to authorize DHCP on the domain.

0. give yourself slack.
1. check cables, cable types, etc. verify all is plugged in correctly, and
that everything necessary is turned on. sometimes a cable that looks like a
good cable is a crossover cable. sometimes a cable that you think is plugged
into the right port on the router is plugged into the wrong port. I once
plugged a ups back into itself, even though I was trying to pay attention to
what I was doing.
2. verify TCPIP is installed on both machines or, if running winxp or
similar, run provided wizards. protocol must be bound to network card.
network connection must be enabled.
3. ipconfig is a useful tool for telling you if the configuration you have
is the configuration you think you have. you can also try pinging 127.0.0.1,
and also, you can try pinging the IP address you've assigned to the computer
4. some routers have built in configuration utilities that run when you log
into them through telnet or http. If you can, try to connect to the routers
configuration utility from both machines to verify that each one is
connected properly.
5. if you have internet access on either computer and this comes through the
network, see if you can connect to the internet, verify you have the latest
versions of all drivers.
6. someone needs me somewhere else now. seeya.

yep.

Yes, I have authorized DHCP. The pc1 is configured as 192.168.0.5,
255.255.255.0 gateway:192.168.0.1; The pc2 is 192.168.0.7, 255.255.255.0, the
gateway:192.168.0.1. I used a d-link 4-port router to link pc1 and pc2. When
I set them in a workgroup, they can ping each other with no problem at all.
However when I set pc1 as a domain controller itek.com, then they both can
ping 192.168.0.1, but can not ping each other, and pc2 can not join the
domain itek.com. really strange. Please help, thank you very much!

I think Network Load Balancing (NLB) is enable on the nic adaptor, try to
disable it.

The fact that you can ping the server while in the workgroup proves that
your connection is fine. Howeve when you try to join the domain, it doesn't
know what itek.com is because you don't have the DNS IP address (which should
be your server IP address if your DNS reside in the same box) specified in
you XP machine. Without DNS specified, all your XP machine knows about the
server is 192.168.0.5 not tek.com

Do you need DNS to ping an ip address?
