Hi,

I have some issues with my exchange server 2000

1. Spam issue
Whenever I checked the "Allow all computers which successfully authenicate
to relay, regardless the list above", spammer would able to hack in the
exchange server and send out ten thoursands of spam using my exchange
server.
I am not sure why that is happening because the options I checked require
computers to be authenicated before the relay.
The reason I check this box is because I have a few branch offices relay on
my exchange server to send emails. And some locations won't have a static
IP, so I can't really specify a certain range of IP addresses to relay.
I finally bought a firewall and setup vpn connections from those remote
offices and mobile laptops clients in order to relay the exchange server.
Out of curiousity, how did the spammer authenicate to my exchange server in
the first place?

2. Email issue.
When a staff send email to the distribution list from the global address
book. One of the individual is having problem getting the email. The error
message is below and some of the information like name, IP and domain info
are modified. When I tried to send email to this individual instead of
using the distribution list and he has no problem getting my emails. I
wonder why. I hope someone is able to help me. Thanks

There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server.
Please contact your system administrator.

Hate to tell you stuff you may already know...
For the 2nd problem did you check that the smtp settings on his AD
account were ok? If you can email him manually but not from the
distribution list then this is the only thing I can think of straight
up.
Sorry I can;t help you any more. Good luck.

It is a contact not a domain user account. The settings are fine because the
problem didn't happen until recently. Thanks for your message thou.

Hi.

For yor First issue, I know a possibility!

If you activate/authorize the guest account, all spammers are considered as
"authenticated as guest".
=> So relay is allowed to them! You must not activate this account to
disallow relay.

Bye.

Wow..I am surprised getting so much feedback about my post here. For those
who are kind enough to share their knowledge, I thank you. I just want to
tell you that I did try to find it at google but some of the stuffs that I
found there I already knew or didn't apply to my situation. I am already
doing what people suggests and there is nothing wrong in the configuration
side, so I decide to post it here in case those who are in MCSA-M or MCSE-M
want to discuss about the problem. Most of the messages I get are "Get MCSE
like me!" or "Go to GOOGLE and look it yourself, dude!". Well.I know it is
a good thing to be a MCSE and congratulations because you are one but I don'
t see how "good" you are yet even after reviewing those suggestions that
some of you gave me because it didn't really solve the problem. If you look
at my original post, you will understand that exchange server is not a
"open" relay but spammer could still relay on the exchange and I don't have
Internet mail connector installed either. The problem is not just like that
and that's why I want a discussion.

If your intention is humiliating others who are not MCSE as you are, you got
it and I know you are MCSE now but are you really "that" good? I doubt it. I
want to be MCSE too but MCSE is not the only thing in this world and there
are always other priorities and things to take care of first. Not everyone
is MCSE and they might need direction on where to post their problems or get
help. I wonder how many of you know about everything around you and never
ask for help or advices from others. At least try to be humble and nice even
if you an expert in everything. Being nice and polite won't cost you a
thing. Peace out!

Mee-Ow.
I came to this group back in 97 with questions like that and people
like Roger A, Laura, Consultant and Friz flamed me for asking them to
do my job for me. Forgive me for saying so but that is how you come
accross too.

If you really genuinely want to learn and not just get a free
short-cut to the solution let me know.

I still suggest google. If you cant perform the basic telnet test
then call in someone who can.

The rules in all the links given are pertinent and require you to do
at least *some* research and isolation of the issue.

With no explanation of how things are placed or information like
whether or not you use NAT and/or port forwarding I cant tell you if
the threat is internal or external.

If you were to ask advice of MSPSS then you would get a very different
view I'm sure. For $200 they would doubtless send you the same links
as you've seen (oh only maybe they would only be the Micro$oft ones).

---

Assuming you're running MSX2K, Just because you havent installed an
"IMC" (or "additional" SMTP connector) doesnt mean that there isnt a
default SMTP connector somewhere being relayed off. - MSX2K is SMTP
in a big way!

Look in system manager under
SERVERNAME
--PROTOCOLS
--------SMTP

You may infact need to *add* an SMTP connector under the Connectors
folder to secure your server against the hijacking of your external ip
address. (and not having a custom SMTP connector correclty configured
may be your down fall)
