    - Korgo Virus We had two days of the LAN being down this week with the Win32.Korgo.I virus. It has similar behaviour to the Sasser that we spent a whole day on 'fixing'. We had Microsoft Auto-updates turned of for some reason - MS04-011 patch would have stopped it, but it wasn't on all our machines. It most likely got in via a laptop that was on the net while outside our firewall and then brought it in. We are updating all our laptops to XP and using it's firewall - better that nothing. I'm new to MS certifications, and it looks like my employer will pay for some of the costs, so I'm researching...anyway, wanted to ask the more experienced folks a couple of questions. First, are there restrictions in combining exams for multiple certifications. For example, say the track I wanted to follow for the MCDBA included exams 70-228 (core), 70-229(core), 70-215(core), and 70-216(elect.). These four exams also fall under the MCSE track (228 and 229 are electives under MCSE, and 215 & 216 are core). So if I pass the four exams for the MCDBA, does this mean I can also count all four of these towards the MCSE (4 out of 7). Or does MS have restrictions on what can be used for multiple certifications? Secondly - what method would be best? Take classes? Or get the books, and go on my own. I know different people learn differently, etc. I have about 3 years of SQL Server experience (some admin & design, but mostly development & SQL), and lots of experience with general windows (not a lot of server or active directory experience, mainly workstation).     - OT PKI / Certificate services Ok this is a question for someone who is a US corporate guru. In a public traded company how do you satisfy the SEC rules regard email and file security. It sounds like that no one in the IT department for the organization is even allowed to have recovery agent authority because we might be able to read or see something that may lead us to purchase or sell stock. This puts the IT department in a bad situation as we a responsible for the backup and recovery of all data, however if a VP looses his certificate we can not recover his data. Does anyone here have experience with these type of policy decisions? I am looking to find out if a Certifcate server implementation can satisfy the SEC rules and what tuning to group policy, recover agents and key backups may need to be done.     - WMI Hi All, I need a script that reports back the name of the Local Area Connection on a Windows 2000 Server. To clarify. In properties of "My Network Places" where the LAN connections are displayed, the default names have been renamed. So the first connection usually called "Local Area Connection" has been renamed to "First Net Connection" In Windows 2003, the WIN32_NetworkAdapter Class has a NETConnectionID value that returns the name however I can't find anything similar in Windows 2000.     - A bad 70-216 book? I've been using the sybex study guide, and one of the red exam cram books. With both these I was doing Ok. I then got the Exam Prep Windows 2000 Network book for this exam and it's all gone wrong! I'm finding the practice questions very badly written - often the questions/answers/both are very vague and make assumptions so Im getting a lot wrong. In addition, it seems to ask a lot of questions on non-network stuff, like creating a batch file to detect what version of Windows you have, and how to fix a mouse that stops responding through a switchbox?! Will the exam cover this kind of stuff - really?! For instance, one question (shortened version!) said there are 4 file servers, \\research\projects1, then 2, 3, and 4 as well. Requirement is to add all 4 to a DFS tree, optional requirements is to permit any authorised user to access stuff on any of the four servers, also to provide redundancy, and to use the closest, then next available and so on when accessing them. The solution they give simply says "Add the DFS Snapin to the MMC, add one share called \\research\projects to the tree". Thats it, so I think to myself - well, they added a new share but didn't link it to the original 4 servers in any way, so I'll say answer d, it doesn't satisfy any requirement.     - OT: ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!! As we all know, one of the drawbacks about being computer-savvy is that you end up being tech support for the entire family. Case in point: my wife's uncle. A few months ago, he bought a laptop to get online, play some chess, etc. So far, so good. He, unfortunately, is one of those people who thinks he knows everything about everything, and computers are no exception. Here are some of Uncle Karl's Greatest Hits: 1. He wanted to download Volksmusik (think lederhosen and accordions). He claimed Microsoft had a filesharing program. He was referring to Windows Media Player. 2. He calls IE "Google" because that's his start page. We asked him to start his browser and to start IE, and he had no idea what we were talking about. 3. His laptop came with an alleged anti-virus program preinstalled. It was called "Norman". Not "Norton", "Norman". Needless to say, the virus defs were never updated. My wife, my stepdaughter and I started getting tons of virus (Netsky) e-mails, all originating from his ISP. The common thread: we're all in his OE address book. In addition, he said his computer was running painfully slow. Putting 2+2 together, I explained he most likely had a virus. He said -- repeatedly -- "no...that's impossible...I ran a virus scan and it said there were no viruses" (see my statement about virus defs in the previous sentence). He was coming down to Dortmund to visit people (he lives about 2 hours from here), so I told him to bring it down and let me look at it. (One advantage of this strategy is that it gets me out of actually having to deal with him.) He brought the laptop...without the power adapter...with ~58% of battery life. I installed AVG on the laptop, and within a second of starting it up, it started finding infected files...more viruses than a Mexican brothel. After all was said and done, there were over 2800 files infected. Since I was under time constraints due to the battery situation, I didn't use the newest defs at that point, but the ones I had weren't THAT old. At this point the battery died, so I gave it back to him to bring home. I figured I'd take care of the rest of the work (rescanning with new defs, installing/running spyware detectors) via Remote Support. We finally got connected...after 11 attempts at getting him to follow the correct sequence of instructions. Afterwards, all was well. 4. Last night, he had a problem logging into his ISP's website to check out his account information (https). He kept getting an error page. Here was his thought as to why: "I haven't logged into the site for a while. I know computers have all these fine electronics in them. Maybe they needed to get used to the website again." Thank $Deity my wife's German is much better than mine (after all, she IS German). She gets the pleasure of handling most of Uncle Karl's calls (especially since I have a bitch of a time trying to understand his dialect). After last night's episode, my wife suddenly developed the 1000-yard stare that any of us that have ever done hell desk know all so well. I thought it was hilarious and started laughing, because I've been there and done that, and because it's HER side of the family and not mine. We were eating dinner, and I was a bit frightened by the way she was holding her knife. I gently backed away from the table. He's taking a Computers for Seniors class at the local Volkshochschule (think community college/adult learning center).     - ttl value when ping... Hi there, When I ping, for example www.cjman.com it returns a ttl value of 119. If I ping www.gallaudet.edu, it returns a value of 50. I have my Server 2003 set up and the DNS always returns a DNS value of 128. I've gone and dickered with the TTL in the "A" records for the server, but nothing can change it.     - Exchange exercises I have the MSPress 70-224 book on Exchange 2000. I installed Exchange 2000 Server on my W2k 2000 Server machine. The book says that Outlook 2000 is included on the CD, but the CD label doesn't say this, and I don't see it anywhere in the CD files. So I installed Outlook 2000 on my workstation from my copy of MS Office 2000 instead. Is it supposed to be on the CD?? I did the first exercise exactly as described, several times, but I don't know enough about Exchange to be able to figure this out. The exercise involves sending an email to an invalid address in another domain, and using offline operation so that I have to poll the server to send or receive. I receive no bounced messages. I did send an email to an invalid recipient in my own domain and got a bounce message immediately (without having to poll again), but repeated polling doesn't bring up any bounce message notification for the email sent to an invalid address in another domain.
