OT: ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!
As we all know, one of the drawbacks about being computer-savvy is that you
end up being tech support for the entire family. Case in point: my wife's
uncle.
A few months ago, he bought a laptop to get online, play some chess, etc. So
far, so good. He, unfortunately, is one of those people who thinks he knows
everything about everything, and computers are no exception. Here are some
of Uncle Karl's Greatest Hits:
1. He wanted to download Volksmusik (think lederhosen and accordions). He
claimed Microsoft had a filesharing program. He was referring to Windows
Media Player.
2. He calls IE "Google" because that's his start page. We asked him to start
his browser and to start IE, and he had no idea what we were talking about.
3. His laptop came with an alleged anti-virus program preinstalled. It was
called "Norman". Not "Norton", "Norman". Needless to say, the virus defs
were never updated. My wife, my stepdaughter and I started getting tons of
virus (Netsky) e-mails, all originating from his ISP. The common thread:
we're all in his OE address book. In addition, he said his computer was
running painfully slow. Putting 2+2 together, I explained he most likely had
a virus. He said -- repeatedly -- "no...that's impossible...I ran a virus
scan and it said there were no viruses" (see my statement about virus defs
in the previous sentence).
He was coming down to Dortmund to visit people (he lives about 2 hours from
here), so I told him to bring it down and let me look at it. (One advantage
of this strategy is that it gets me out of actually having to deal with
him.) He brought the laptop...without the power adapter...with ~58% of
battery life. I installed AVG on the laptop, and within a second of starting
it up, it started finding infected files...more viruses than a Mexican
brothel. After all was said and done, there were over 2800 files infected.
Since I was under time constraints due to the battery situation, I didn't
use the newest defs at that point, but the ones I had weren't THAT old. At
this point the battery died, so I gave it back to him to bring home. I
figured I'd take care of the rest of the work (rescanning with new defs,
installing/running spyware detectors) via Remote Support. We finally got
connected...after 11 attempts at getting him to follow the correct sequence
of instructions. Afterwards, all was well.
4. Last night, he had a problem logging into his ISP's website to check out
his account information (https). He kept getting an error page. Here was
his thought as to why: "I haven't logged into the site for a while. I know
computers have all these fine electronics in them. Maybe they needed to get
used to the website again."
Thank $Deity my wife's German is much better than mine (after all, she IS
German). She gets the pleasure of handling most of Uncle Karl's calls
(especially since I have a bitch of a time trying to understand his
dialect). After last night's episode, my wife suddenly developed the
1000-yard stare that any of us that have ever done hell desk know all so
well. I thought it was hilarious and started laughing, because I've been
there and done that, and because it's HER side of the family and not mine.
We were eating dinner, and I was a bit frightened by the way she was holding
her knife. I gently backed away from the table.
He's taking a Computers for Seniors class at the local Volkshochschule
(think community college/adult learning center). I wonder if any teachers
have committed seppuku.

ttl value when ping...
Hi there,
When I ping, for example www.cjman.com it returns a ttl value of 119. If I
ping www.gallaudet.edu, it returns a value of 50.
I have my Server 2003 set up and the DNS always returns a DNS value of 128.
I've gone and dickered with the TTL in the "A" records for the server, but
nothing can change it.
It is active directory integrated, but I am not sure if that has anything to
do with it.
How can I change the TTL value?

70-210 or 70-270?
Hi Guys,
Just want your opinions on something. I am doing the win2k3 MCSE track however am planning on doing 70-210 instead of 70-270 for the client exam. Two reasons, one I have a number of win2k clients and two I already have a 70-210 study guide. I am concerned however that doing so may undermine my MCSE somewhat. What do you think?
Thanks.

Exchange exercises
I have the MSPress 70-224 book on Exchange 2000.
I installed Exchange 2000 Server on my W2k 2000 Server machine. The
book says that Outlook 2000 is included on the CD, but the CD label
doesn't say this, and I don't see it anywhere in the CD files. So I
installed Outlook 2000 on my workstation from my copy of MS Office
2000 instead. Is it supposed to be on the CD??
I did the first exercise exactly as described, several times, but I
don't know enough about Exchange to be able to figure this out. The
exercise involves sending an email to an invalid address in another
domain, and using offline operation so that I have to poll the server
to send or receive.
I receive no bounced messages. I did send an email to an invalid
recipient in my own domain and got a bounce message immediately
(without having to poll again), but repeated polling doesn't bring up
any bounce message notification for the email sent to an invalid
address in another domain.
Any ideas? Did MS leave out some critical configuration information in
the book necessary for this to happen?

Semi-OT: Lusers
So, I just got a phone call from the AR manager. We got a new printer, and
it's been giving us all sorts of trouble. To set up a mailbox as default
behavior for the printer, the logged-in user must have administrative
priveleges on whatever machine they're logged into. This, my friends, is not
ideal. But, whatever, I didn't buy the stuff, I'm only working with what
I've got. So anyway, I get a call from her. We'll call her, oh "Kristen"
(because I swear, that's *not* her name....). Kristen wants to be set up
with a mailbox, so when she prints, the printer doesn't spit out whatever
mumbo-jumbo she's trying to print today. So I tell her to leave her computer
on instead of turning it off tonight, and I'll do it before I go home. No
big deal. No sooner had I hung up with her than the phone rings again. Yeah,
Kristen again.
"Ken, do you need my password to set up my mailbox?"
"Yeah, I do, but I have a list here. Don't worry about it."
"Oh, alright then. But if you need it, it's on a sticky pad under my
keyboard."
*Chuckle*
"Is that funny? Am I not supposed to do that?"
"Well, no, not really. I mean, it's not that big a problem here, but whereas
you're the manager, you must have sensitive information on your computer,
right? And you probably don't want too many people getting their paws all
over it."
"Well, yeah, I gue-"
"I suggest you memorize your password, instead of looking at it every
morning when you log in. That way, no one can break into your computer."
"Oh, I know my password, I have it memorized. I just keep it under my
keyboard so Janet can use my computer if I'm not here!"
*Chuckles again* "Kristen, Janet can use her username and password when she
logs in to your computer, ya know. The usernames and passwords aren't
specific to each computer."
"Wait, are you saying that everyone has the same username and password? That
doesn't make much sense, and it doesn't seem very secure."
"No. I'm saying that everyone has a unique username and password, but every
user *could*, theoretically, log in at someone else's computer. For
situations like you and Janet."
"Oh. So, when can you set up my mailbox?"
"I...just.....here, tell me what time you're leaving this afternoon and I'll
set it up when you're done for the day."
"OK, I'm leaving in 5 minutes, have a good night!"
*sigh* "You too, Kristen."
Ugh.

Jane is a member of the Marketing group and the Marketing Management group.
The Marketing Management group has Full Control permissions on the MktgMgmt

folder. What are Jane's effective permissions on the folder?
A. None.
B. Write, List Folder Contents, Read & Execute, Modify
C. Read, Write, List Folder Contents
D. Write, Modify

My answer: D
My Logic: If you've been denied Read, you certainly can't Read&Execute or
List Files.
Book's Answer: B
Book's Logic: Because the Marketing group has been denied Read permisson on

dynamic updates is 8.2.1
Who was right... I did a google search for bind srv
dynamic update the first page to come back is

Which states 8.2.1
A KB article on MS web site states 8.1.2

OT: Nosferatu is hiring
Paint me thoroughly flabbergasted, but my former
employer/nemesis/antichrist is hiring for technical positions _in this
country_.
Openings are for an "IT project leader," which is that to which the U.S.
programmers got reclassified when the coding work got sent to
Cheapistan, and "senior technical support," which tells me the one
support person of any value (whose value was mainly his ability to lie
with impunity and finesse to customers about the scope and impact of
crises) quit or got fired.
Neither opening is posted with any online service. I only found out
about them because my well-meaning parents provide me with the weekly
classifieds from the local Sunday paper. The jobs aren't even listed
with the paper's own site. I don't know what kind of candidates they
hope to get with a listing like this. Since this has to be a conscious
choice, I can't begin to imagine what gambit Nosferatu has planned.
All the remaining project managers got laid off on December 31st of last
year, as part of N.'s plan to directly (micro)manage the software
development process. To hire someone for on-site is a serious
retrenchment. Support was supposed to be sent to the group in the
Philippines, about which I've said little to this point.
A note on the Filipino support abortion:
Some companies sent support overseas out of cheapness, others have a
more legitimate idea of trying to provide round-the-clock support
without a night shift by forwarding calls to a locale where it's
currently daylight. N. was obviously motivated by the former, but was
turning the latter on its head. Despite the company's service being
available 24 hours, it received 99% of its use 8:00AM - 8:00PM ET.
There was really no need for after-hours support. In a move that made
sense only to N., he got the idea to forward support calls (using VoIP
over a path that was 128kbps, and shared with the data traffic, on the
Philippine end, if you can believe that one) to the "office" in Manila.
Thing is, Manila is 13 hours (if I recall correctly) ahead of the
eastern U.S., so the Filipinos would be answering support calls during
what amounted to a night shift. Given the truly byzantine and soul-
crushing nature of the support required, I guess having support techs
half-zonked-out, or else reduced to quivering catatonia by caffeine
overdoses, added an extra frisson to support calls.

Outsourcing gone mad!
With Catholic clergy in short supply in the US, Indian priests are picking
up some of their work, saying Mass for special intentions, in a sacred if
unusual version of outsourcing. American, as well as Canadian and European,
churches, are sending Mass intentions, and requests for services like those
to remember deceased relatives and thanksgiving prayers, to clergy in India.
The requests are mostly routed to Kerala's churches through the Vatican, the
bishops or through religious bodies. Rarely, prayer requests come directly
to individual priests.
While most requests are made via mail or through travelling clergymen, a
significant number arrive via email, a sign that technology is expediting
this practice.
In Kerala's churches, memorial and thanksgiving prayers conducted for local
residents are said for a donation of 40 rupees ($1.30), whereas a prayer
request from the US typically comes with $US5 ($7.25), the Indian priests
say.
