sorry to bother you but I need a bit of help to connect my pc to domain.
Here is a list of what I have and the questions below. Sorry about the
questions but the 290 Microsoft press does not provide any info on
configuring a server most of the items have been skipped.

1 pc with Win 2003 server enterprise named Server01 with Domain called
Contoso.com
2 pc with XP Pro with SP2
1 8 port switch
1 wireless router connected to broadband modem

The Server01 has 1 NIC card so I have connected that to port 2 on the switch
and I have also connected the wireless router using ethernet to the uplink
port for the switch and then plugged my 2 XP pro computers to the switch
using the available ports.

On Server01 in the contoso domain I have added the computer names to the
domain and also created user accountso n the domain and created a dhcp scope
of 192.168.0.10-254 and allocated the server01 a static IP of 192.168.0.10
and a default gateway of 192.168.1.1 which is provided by the wireless
router.I installed an active directory. I installed a dhcp server and Dns
forwarder. I have not changed anything on the xp pcs besides try to join
them to domain and failed. I have disabled the firewall on server01.

I have verified that the DHCP, AD, User accounts, Computer Accounts are
there in the Contoso.com domain under the admin tools section.

I went through to system properties-change- join to domain- entered domain
name- then a box came up whereby I had to enter a username and password and
I entered the user details I had created on Server01 but I keep getting
wrong username or bad password.

[b]Am I doing something wrong or is there something I need to setup on the
XP or Server01?
Should I disable DHCP server+ DNS on my wireless Router?
How can I make all my connections by the XP pcs go through the Server01?
Why am I getting error message when the user accounts are valid and
passwords in the Contoso Domain?
How can I create a subnet mask so I can carry on using my wireless internet
whilst tinkering around with the DC and XP pcs?

You have a dns problem, please make sure the client have the corrent dns
setting

check this:

Your first problem is the DHCP scope you have set.

> > On Server01 in the contoso domain I have added the computer names to the

> > of 192.168.0.10-254 and allocated the server01 a static IP of 192.168.0.10

> > router.

If the server has 192.168.0.10 as the static IP, then that IP can't be in
the DHCP pool.

Best bet is to just change the server to 192.168.0.5 and leave the DHCP as
it is.

Your next problem is joining them to the domain. In order to join a computer
to a domain, you need to have the permission to do that. Users don't
typically have the ability to create computer accounts in the Active
Directory, or to join a computer with an existing account. Try using the
Administrator account.

Finally, if your wireless router is on 192.168.1.1, you may find you have
access issues unless you have changed your subnetting. Best bet is to change
it to 192.168.0.1

You have to use the domain administrator account or user account that belong
to the domain admin group in order to join those XP machines to the domain.
It seems to me you are using domain user account that you had created which
doesn't have the privillege to join the domain

I have created a domain admin account and tried the same thing but I still I
get the same error message. I have stopped thinking about the dhcp scope and
connected both computers to my wireless router and tried joining them to the
domain first before playing around with anything but I still get the same
error wrong username.

Do you mean I should create an admin account on server01 and then use that
as the username and password?

Should I not change the way users logon on the XP computers.

All I want to do now is just connect the computer to the domain and then the
rest I will learn as I go.

Are you using the format domain\account?
e.g. contoso\administrator

Can you check the ip address setting, to troubleshoot Assign Static IP
Address to your client pcs. then use nslookup for dsn server diagnosis.

eg:
nslookup server01
check if you get ip address for the server.

Here you have probably started to introduce a NAT problem.
Are you sure you want the server and the XP machine on different networks?
The dhcp request will not travel through the router. Make sure you
understand ip-netwoking and routing.

1st connect everything to the LAN ports, don't use the WAN port. That way
you will have created ONE network.
Make sure the server has an IP numer which is NOT provides by the DHCP
server to another machine.

First make sure you have a correct ip connection. Make sure a simple ping
command works. After that you can look at the next level.

This has nothing to do with the NAT at the moment. Misheck, just follow this
setting and you will be all set:

Server--------
|
XP1-----------|--------Switch----------->Router----------->Internet
|
XP2-----------

1. Static IP address for the server. Use the server as a DCHP & DNS server
2. Configure XP machines to obtain DHCP address from the server
3. Make sure you can ping the server from those XP machines by name and vice
versa.
4. Join those XP boxes to the domain using either domain administrator
account or any account belong to domain admin group. As PAJ has mentioned
above, use this format for user name: contoso\administrator. You should be
able to join the domain by then.
5. Disable your wirless router DHCP
6. Connect your router's LAN port to the switch. Most of the switches
nowaday have autosensing function, therefore you may not even need to use a
crossover cable. If that is not the case, then just use the uplink port with
a straight cable.
7. Configure your server DHCP scope to include the router's internal static
IP address as the gateway.
8. Renew the IP addresses for the XP boxes to make sure they get the new
gateway information.

Let's us know if you still have problem.

First try and fix your DNS issues. Hopefully the DNS problem is just
because you are using your ISP's DNS (on the clients).
Change the DNS on the client to point to IP address of the server
(192.168.0.10). As has been suggested ensure you do not have two DHCP
severs running (disable the router one) and the clients should then pick
up the correct settings (including DNS).
Double check you are using a Valid 'domain account' and the password is
correct, because it appears that this is the issue.

First thing first. You don't have to create a computer account in the
domain AD. Once you are able to join those XP machines to the domain, their
computer account will be created automatically.
Second, you definately have to check your DNS to be sure it's working
properly. Try test ping your server by using this command: ping -a
192.168.0.10 to see if it resolves the IP address to your server FQDN. If
it's not, then you have a problem with your DNS

Misheck

I have almost lost hope of even studying for the exam because I cannot join
a computer to domain.

I can ping the domain, I can nslookup the domain but I still cannot join the
domain. I still get wrong username or password. I have checked and reset the
password numerous times but I still get the wrong password. I have entered
the username as contoso\user and also user and contoso.com\user and still
get wrong username.

I have manged to setup the dhcp server scope on the domain and Ican assure
that the IP address on my XP computer is the one allocated by the domain so
it show the connectivity is there but when it comes to joining the domain I
simply cant join the domain.

I still get the wrong username and password.
