When a DHCP client reboots, after the IP stack is started, it issues a DCHP Discovery packet, if the DHCP servers that receive the broadcast respond with a Acknowledge packet. If the DHCP server that acknowledges the client was the one that issued the address the client has cached, the client will request it in the Request packet, if the lease is still active, the DHCP server will respond with a Offer package for the address and the lease time is reset. If the DHCP server is not online when the client reboots, the client will use an APIPA address and continue to rebroadcast a Discovery packet every 5 minutes (2000 and later). As for why the two XP clients are behaving differntly, my guess is that the network IP properties on each client are configured differently. Most likely, APIPA is turned off on Client01. Client02 is working as expected. If you would like to learn more about this I suggest reading the RFC on DHCP (while boring as heck, if there is no better source for learning DHCP, which is a pretty simple protocol) and/or installing a network monitor and watching DHCP traffic. I also don't recommend you go near either until you have a good grasp of IP addressing and basic IP configuration/routing on a LAN. You'll get low-level questions in this area on both tests. The problem with the MCSE track is neither are really taught until the Implementing a Network exam. I recommend taking the rest in order, 70-291, 70-294, 70-294. I also recommend that you take whichever Design exam you are planning on taking LAST! The Design exams are the hardest, and they also tend to build on mos tof the knowledge you've hopefully gained in the first 6 exams. Goo Luck! If you are going to spend $25,000 on ANY school...I would highly recommend Strayer, Georgetown Extension, or something that will carry *ACCREDITED* hours which could be applied towards a college program or certificate. Remember that certifications age and expire, but a degree lasts a lifetime...even if you started to learn programming with punchcards or the Apple 6502 processor, loading applicaitons via tape, or waiting for your application, in the queue, to be executed. Hey, this stuff was still around in the late 80's and early 90's. So, your MCSE 2003 might not mean squat in 2010, but that Bachelors degree or that Masters degree will still be a degree. Granted, it may be a bit dated in 20 years...but so will you. ***That having been said, if you have experience and you have a degree, I would still consider spending $25,000 with Strayer or Georgetown Extension, or some other college. If it were $6,000, it would be a different story. Nocturnal gave you a clue last week when he asked if your DHCP client service was disabled. Check that this service is working properly (remember to check the services it depends on as well). If it fails to start in a timely manner your ip address will become 0.0.0.0 and if the service comes on line a few moments later your macine will begin to look for the DHCP server asking for an IP address. If you are looking to get a cert and knock it out, and you have some experience, and most importantly, money to burn... ...the Intense Schoole was pretty good for the price http://www.intenseschool.com/ However, Vigilar has purchased it...and there is no telling what the price is now. ...Extreme Logic was pretty good http://www.hp.com/education/sections/microsoft.html However, HP has purchased it...and, again, pricing is a question. Personally, if you are spending more than $6,000 you could almost teach yourself for less than half of that. Purchase the self-paced training kit for Windows 2003 (~$125) (bookpool.com is my fave); a workstation, or workstations, with plenty of RAM, or a RAM upgrade to your current system ($500-$2000); an inexpensive Linksys hub and Cat5 cables ($30-$50) to connect to your current network; and VMWare Workstation or Virtual PC ($150). You can use the 120-day trials that are out on the net to build your systems. If you really need hands-on instruction, I would also recommend purchasing the CBT Nuggets ($899). They do a really good job. Plan on studying 2-3 hours per day and plan on taking a test once every 2 weeks. First, you could learn from Microsoft's elearning site. The format of the ms exams is no more than simple point 'n' click/drag 'n' drop type questions, with the actual answers actually presented to you up front. So, you simple have to choose/construct the answer from what's given to you. Nowhere do you 'write' anything about your answers, or describe and explain, in your 'own' words, how you came to an answer; in other words, answering the question does not prove an understanding of the question being answered. In addition there is no course work as such that is graded as part of your overall assessment.. The format of the exams make them very easy, and thus open to 'practice test' providers being able to exploit them for profit.
