Hi there,

With Windows XP Pro, it starts up and the hard drive churns and the hard
drive light is on constantly for between 5 to 10 minutes until it finally
settles down....

I ran perfmon.msc and the Average Disk Quota is going through the roof....
as is the memory. Yet it has 20 Gb free space on a 30 G HDD. I ghosted over
to another hard drive and the same problem......

I've cleaned up.... uninstalled Norton 2004 and reinstalled it and the same
thing....

Time for a clean re-install?

Gordon

Hit sysinternals.com and download process viewer and take a look at
what's eating up the machine.

Hi Gordon,

Run the Task Manager, go to View/Select Columns, and turn on the following
columns: "I/O Read Bytes" and "I/O Write Bytes." This will give you details
as to which process is accessing the disk.

Although many processes will be accessing the disk, look for one with a high
total or a fast rate of increase, especially when you hear the drive being
accessed.

By the way, the advantage of using this rather than Task Manager or Perfmon is
that it presents all of the linked operations that make up the process in
question in real time, as well as handles that they spawn, which makes it much
easier to watch what's going on on your machine. It's definitely worth taking a
look.

Depends what day of the week you ask me. I'm in NYC now, working for,
erm, a large company with a recognizable name. :-)

Corporate America can be pretty stupid.

But NY is a bazillion times better than Pennsyltucky.

you boot your machine :
