    - Server not appearing in Network Places Hi, As the subject line mentions, in network places the server doesn't appear. However if you enter the unc path \\server\data then your in no problems.     - 70-292 Misery Over. Cashed in my free 2nd shot... and passed this nasty little exam with 700. Just enough... This exam is designed to sort out the men from the boys as I found out first time, far too casually even though I'd spent quite a bit of time on the books. If you're going to pass this, you need to know the product very well, get almost all the answers correct and read every question twice. Use the "Upgrading your certification for MS Windows Server 2003 (70-292 & 70-296)" by Dan Holme and Orin Thomas. Technet, and every whitepaper relevant you can read. Then use MS Virtual PC and practice as much as possible. Get test questions, and if you don't know the answers, work them out using your VPC setup. Also get very comfy with NSLookup, all the support tools and reskit tools. Get familiar with the ADSI object model if you got the time, as a couple of scripting questions popped in with regards to WSH and user creations. My exam was very heavy on DNS 12 questions and security 8 questions. The rest was GPO, server maintenance, terminal services, DR, shadow copies etc.. The exam crashed twice, I was moved from on PC to another and while all that was happening, the time was ticking and I wasn't doing the test... very poor performance MS, the exams are too expensive to fuck up on us. What I'm trying to say is the exam crashed 10 minutes into the test, and when I resumed on another PC, I'd lost 8 minutes. That's shit.     - Kerpalism at it's finest I didn't really appreciate having my computer rebooted the other day and having changes to my configuration made without my consent. Microsoft has overstepped it's bounds and even if the license agreement states that I have agreed to this, I'm not required to be reasonable about it, or do anything sane. For those of you who don't know... A number of years ago, for no real reason, Microsoft was kind enough to invite me in the doors and provide me with a lot of information I probably shouldn't have. Access to their computer network, intranet, old software. They even paid for my plane ticket. I still don't know why. I never did anything for them. Even after this, I was given more information by employees who didn't really have a reason, either. While I was there I printed over 600 pages of their internal documents, drank sodas and milk, and talked to their employees about useless nonsense and basically wasted people's time and money. I smiled and waved at the security cameras. It was fun. When I left I had one of their employees carry my bag because I said my arm hurt... he even gave me a couple of extra sodas to take with me. I left the documents on the printer, though. What am I going to do with a bunch of paper? Amongst this information, which I may be disclosing at some point in the near future (whenever it suits my purposes and makes Microsoft look foolish [because they are and people just haven't figured it out yet]), there were lists of phone numbers to various Microsoft departments, names and email addresses. Just so you know... I'm going to be calling these people whenever I feel like it, wasting their time, and using social engineering techniques to gain more information about the company, which I will make public at my discretion, or balloon into more time wasting and entertainment value. I'll throw them a little bit of nonsense to make them think the wrong thing about the projects they are working on, tell them that they need to report back to headquarters, yell and scream about how they totally screwed up this or that and then hang up. Maybe I'll tell them that their parents are dead or play Beethoven over the phone. Rest easy, folks, in this process, I won't violate the law or do anything that Microsoft can retaliate against. And I've got plenty of time on my hands and nothing better to do. There's an alternative to all of this, of course, Microsoft could spare themselves humiliation and lost revenue by granting one simple request on my part. More details when I feel like it.     - Revelation of the day with regards to MS certification value [commentary] While both are totally invalid "certifications" and essentially unimportant in the job market, BOTH the MCNGP and the MCSBNGP+++ have been regarded by the unindoctrinated as "worthy", at least of an initial inquiry. It is only upon following up that we're full of something does it become apparent that we are better than everyone else. This suggests that currently non-existant certifications may be useful in increasing one's perceived value to stupid hiring managers. Consider the possibility... An overflow of "bogus" non-certification certifications on the market would cloud the vision of these human orange cones and hurtle MS's certification division into disarray. Consider... If there really were an MCSB, an MCSC, MCSD, MCSF, MCSG, MCSH, MCSI, et al, and you had one on your love me wall, and the hiring manager was too lazy to really look into it (and they usually ARE), your resume might move to the top of the stack simply because you have more four letter words than the next guy. As Microsoft has not specifically created these varied certifications, they cannot claim "ownership" of the initials, and as such, it would not be illegal to create them. If one were to create these certifications, what one could do is have a test for each, albeit one that is dramatically simpler than the . In this way, the certifications would become fair to stupid people, and the playing field would be leveled for entering the job market. The credibility of any given certification would require further analysis and examination on the part of the hiring manager, and the total cost of hiring an MCSwhatever would increase because it would become more difficult to separate reality from fiction. What steps would be required to make this process so it would not be easily discernable as "bogus"? What steps would be required to maintain the legality of the process? How many should we make?     - Woohoo! Well, passed 291 today. Different testing centre from the last time and the whole thing went without a hitch. That makes me an MCSA. CCNA next, methinks. I'm getting a little tired of MS exams :-) Passed with 700, when actually I thought I might have failed due to me having to take an educated guess at more than one question. It's certainly not the nicest MS test in the world! Interestingly, I had the exact same problem as this guy had with a DNS simulation question: http://www.sadikhov.com/forum/Passed-70-291-Score-962_30107.html I sent feedback for that question. I also had another DNS sim question. The question involved two domains and a DNS server in one. The thing was, the same of the domain was wrong (i.e. the DNS server I was configuring was on abc.com and not xyz.com, even though the question said that I had to configure the DNS server on xyz.com...)     - 70-291 DHCP Question Hello All, My second first (see post '70-291 - Didn't fail!' on the 31st of May for an explanation of that) attempt at 291 is on Tuesday. I have a question regarding DHCP and DHCP relays - how does the DHCP server know what set of configuration to serve to a client? What I mean is, let's say we have a DHCP server that will serve two subnets, with a DHCP relay on the remote subnet or a 1549 compliant router in between. There are two scopes on the DHCP server, one for the local subnet and one for the remote subnet. Now, what confuses me is this - when the DHCP sever receives a DHCPDISCOVER packet, it will just pick the next address from the free pool of addresses and send it as a DHCPOFFER, yes? So, how does the DHCP server know which scope to offer an address from? Obviously if a DHCPDISCOVER packet is relayed from the remote subnet, that client will need a different default gateway address.     - Global Scope Hello there. I need someone to explain the differences between Domain Local, Global and Universal Groups. I pick up concepts very quickly, but this one just has me at a loss. I have read three separate study guides and still cannot understand global scope. The article I am in front of right now reads; " ... The easier, more accurate and secure way to assign the permissions needed would be to create a Domain Local group and assign it the required permissions on the file shares. " Which I completely understand. Very straight forward, if it ended there... " After doing this, the administrator could create a Global group and place the 20 user accounts into that Global group. Adding the Global group to the Domain Local group results in all 20 users inheriting the Domain Local group's assigned permissions ... " What? Why would you do that? Surely you would simply assign the users to the Domain Local group, as outlined in the first paragraph. Why does the Global group even come into play? I really need some help on this one.     - Restore 2003 Server to Different Hardware I'm trying to setup my disaster recovery plan for a windows 2003 server running TS. It is currently on old IBM hardware, but for disaster recovery I will need to know how to restore to some later IBM hardware. What would be the best path to bring the box back to life? Any suggestions please? For a test, I am currently in the slow process of installing 2003 on different hardware and am going to restore the full backup over it from the old 2003 server, then do a 'repair install' of 2003. I'm not sure if this will work considering 2003 and TS licensing and other issues to do with 2003. However, I have (after much effort) successfully restored a 2000 Domain Controller that had FSMO, GC, DNS and Exchange 5.5 to different hardware.     - 292 Blues... Ok, I just took the 292 for the second time. I knew that I was underprepared the first time, so I worked on it in my spare time for a couple of weeks. Felt much better about it, heard birds possibly chirping, clicked "I'm done," and... didn't pass. Ok, not the end of the world. And I've seen much of the conversation here about the difficulties. What I don't quite get is the scoring. There are six categories on the test. Simply adding the bars together I was well over the 70% (700 out of 1000) needed. But I did score lower than 70% on three of the categories. Do I need to: 1> Just quit whining and become perfect? 2> Bring all categories up above 70%? 3> Bring most (ie, 5) categories above 70%? It's not as clear cut in terms of what skillset category I should focus on. I might add that this one is particularly frustrating. Especially if you add in the "there are some questions that don't count" issue. 40 questions, equally spread would give 6-7 questions per category. In order to get 70% means essentially getting 5 questions right. Add to that some of the questions seem to be particularly squirrely in terms of scenario. These scenarios may be more appropriate to real life, but real life doesn't give you a 2 hour stopwatch. Ah, well. Sorry if this sounds like whining (dusting myself off and getting back on the horse). I absolutely understand and applaud the attempt to make the certifications more meaningful by making the exams more challenging. And I absolutely reserve the right, once I've passed it, to make condescending comments about people who complain about the exam later on<g>. -- RL (failure has a name...) Holy crow! Look at that! This "Outlook Express" thingy is just what I'm
looking for! It combines all the new posts into separate groups - one for
each newsgroup I want to subscribe to! Just like my RSS clients!
