    - Dear MCNGP To be honest, when I first started reading this NG, I was certain that you were just a cruel and mean group of people who got their kicks from tormenting innocent people who came to the NG for help. I have read a lot of your posts. Yes you can be cruel at times, but only to the trolls and dumpers. You do spend a lot of time on off topic stuff, but that's your prerogative. I have even seen members of your group actually give helpful advice. I began reading this NG while trying to decide if MCSE was a certification that I wanted to pursue. I have since decided that I have a long way to go to even begin. I seem to have a knack when it come to computers and can usually figure out what is wrong with them. I do not have any experience in IT. I have decided to give the MSDST a shot and go from there. I also plan to get my A+ certification. Keep up the fight against dumpers and "paper" certs.     - Exam 70-282 Practice Test Availability I have checked several sites (Transcender, MeasureUp and SelfTest) and no one appears to have practice tests for this exam. Transcender says that the status is "under consideration". Does anyone have a clue as to how long it will take before we see practice tests available for this exam? How about a book geared toward the exam? I know the exam is new, but Microsoft is making noise about this being a "required" cert for the Network Infrastructure competency thanks for any insight..     - OT: Progress report Well, it's day 2 of our migration from 2K to XP for the client machines. Our network admin isn't around today, as usual for a Tuesday, and my boss is out today, due to unforseen family events, or something. So that leaves me. Now, do you all want to listen to what the fukc I'm doing all day? I don't think you do, because you'll pummel me into the ground for uttering such blasphemous words, but I'm going to spit it out anyways... So, we're "upgrading" from 2K Pro to XP Pro. But we're not upgrading. We're doing "fresh", "clean" installs. Only not exactly. Let me explain. I've been instructed to back up each computers' Documents and Settings folder, any folders that "look like they may contain user's files", and (get this), Program Files. So I back them up using Windows' backup utility. Easy enough. Put them out on a file server, and get along with the installation. Boot from our brandy-spankin' new XP disks, and install it ALONG SIDE Win2K. Yes, you heard me right. We're not upgrading, but I've been forbidden to format the drives. The closest thing I can do is convert any FAT32 drives over to NTFS. Which will not change the stupidity of the situation. So, I dutifully do as I'm told, installing XP next to 2K (yes, in the same folder). This, against M$'s warnings during install to visit their multiboot page, and warnings that what I'm about to do isn't the smartest thing in the world. So, I asked the head honcho of this project why, exactly, we're doing things this way (that is, installing XP along side 2K). And he says to me "oh, it will overwrite 2000." And I said, no, we're not upgrading you said. You told me we were doing fresh installs. "Yes, we are. And it will overwrite 2000 with XP." Not wanting to argue, and embracing the fact that I'm off the hook for this (and thereby guaranteeing me a job fixing this mess in the future), I went about my business. I installed on the first computer, happy as can be. It installs great, and when I reboot, guess what happens? Yup, it asks me whether I want to boot into 2000 or XP. Hmmmmm....didn't see that one coming, did I? So, my instructions now are to not alter the way I'm doing things, but to simply edit the boot.ini file once the install is complete. This will "effectively" "delete" Windows 2000. I can smell disaster. This setup is only slightly more stable than Windows ME on a 5 year old eMachines box with a failing hard drive. Now, remember I said I was to backup Program Files? Yeah, well now it's time to restore backups. So, I do as I'm told and begin restoring, knowing full well the adventures that lay before me. Of course, once backups are restored, most programs won't work. Acrobat Reader works, and a couple custom apps work. But now I've got a mess of program directories with executables, dlls, and other assorted garbage in them that just won't work. And worst of all, they're not "removable" (by Add/Remove Programs....because they're not installed. They're *there*, but they're not installed.) So, I begin the awful task of reinstalling what I can, what they need, and what I feel like giving them. So, the time comes to install our accounting/inventory software. It's called Best. And it's not. It's nothing but trouble. So, after freezing on the install on the first machine for over an hour, it finally "finishes". Turns out all it installed was some Best diagnostic something-or-other. So I have to scrap it and delete the appropriate Program Files directory, and go at it again. This time it works. So, after I finish installing the junk for the lusers, all is well. Of course, it's only a matter of time before 2K and XP decide they want a divorce and cant handle living together in the same directory, and sh!t hits the fan. Then the real fun begins. So, I was here until 9 last night doing this, I was in at 7 this morning doing this, but I'm getting my a$$ out of here at 5:30, not a minute later, today. I don't know how much I can take of doing this the wrong way.     - Studying for 70-290 I'm pretty new to the Windows Server OSes. I started working on NT 4.0 in 1999, Windows Server 2000 in 2001, and Windows Server 2003 just a few months ago. I'm trying to pass my first Windows Server 2003 exam - 70-290. I attended the Microsoft 2273A class, read the Sybex 70-290 Study Guide, and the Microsoft Press 70-290 study guide. However, when I took a MeasureUp practice exam, I failed with a 53% and did not pass any objective out of five. I admit the possibility exists that I'm just too stupid to pass the exam, however I've been successfully working on networks and servers for over 20 years. The most difficult aspects of the exam seemed to be where you are presented with a very long scenario - I just can't keep the facts straight. Does anyone have a tried and true method for how to handle questions such as these? I'm going back to the books, but I would appreciate some study and exam taking tips.     - Please, Sir! May I have another! I'm totally wracked. I was up till 3 last night studying, tried to catch 4 hours sleep and resume at 7 but the damn cat started howling at 5am. That woke me up, and with all the coffee I had the night before, I couldn't get back to sleep. I can't imagine how bad that cat would be if it still had it's balls. I hammer-tossed the cat in the direction of Canada and got back to studying some more. Thank god for him, though. I had a feeling I needed to really review automated/unattended installs. I was feeling hazy on that stuff and as it turns out, half the test focused on it. Well, I just finished taking the MS Windows XP exam. I guess I really underestimated this test. I know there were a lot of "paper" MCSEs in the NT4 days but I don't think that's gonna be the case anymore. This test was HARD. I picked up a cram book and it did an OK job. It was 430 pages and I went though it in about seven days. Last night and this morning put together I spent about 9 hours reviewing and taking practice tests. So basically about 50 hours total. The test really went into a lot of depth, though, and the cram book just scratched the surface. I'd be reading a question and thinking, "okay, I know where they're going with this, I know what the solution will be". Nope. Every single question was tough. There wasn't a single "gimme". Each question would intentionally discard the obvious answers or give scenarios where the most common solution wasn't applicable, so you have to know all those backwater voodoo solutions. There *were* a lot of real-world scenarios but they were the kind you would typically approach in real life with a trial-and-error methodology. Obviously, that isn't an option on a test. You had to be able to mentally troubleshoot a minimum of three steps ahead. It was crazy. It was 50 questions and I finished with about three minutes left on the clock. I had enough time to review two questions and then got peaced out to the "Printing Report" screen. Passing score was 700 and I got a 737. Doesn't get any closer than that. I want to run an TFTP server on my Win2K server. Rather than using a 3rd party piece of software I would like to use a Microsoft version.     - Installing Active Directory on standalone server Please help i feel such a fool...have an evaluation licence that i got with the training manual but have problems trying to install AD. That's probably limited to skills, and cannot be used to teach judgment. Someone once said an education is what you have left when you've forgotten everything you have learned. I have win 2003 server running on my server and about 25 clients running 2k and xp pro. I have no issues with 2k but i am experiencing very slow swithching between users on the xp machines. I also find that the connection the my mapped drives after not using them is very slow...and i mean slow to connect 30 sec. or more

Any idea's as to why this is happening?

Might be a WINS issue. It's probably taking as long as it does because the client is first checking the local name cache, than DNS, than WINS and than, finaly, gets the address by broadcast! So, verify your WINS configuration before you try anything else...

Might need to turn off INDEXing on your XP systems.

This is a know issue between a W2K server and XP. It will be repaired in SP2 or you can call MS and get the fix. Not sure if they will charge for the fix. We opted to tell our customers the truth about this problem
