    - OT: Call center blues Well, one of the joys of the offshore call center is that the world is now a much smaller place. This morning I went on a trip around the world - several trips actually - and it only took about 45 minutes. I had cancelled a subscription to an online accounting service, hosted by a well known small business software company, I won't mention their name (intuit), and it looked like they had doubled billed my credit card (it turns out they did not, but that is another story). So I go onto the web site, and like many companies these days there was no phone number to call, just an e-mail option. Well, I want to talk to a real person, so I call the number on my credit card statement. The man that answered the phone was obviously of recent Indian ancestry, but he was polite and asked how he could help me. I explained my situation, and he says it is an online issue and he gave me the number to the online help desk. I call the number he gave me and it was PayPal. OK, maybe I miscalled; no it was PayPal. So I call the man back, I get a different Indian this time, explained my problem, and he said it was an online issue and he will give me the number to the online help desk. Wait a sec, I say, The last guy gave me a number and it was PayPal. Paypal, that's not right he assured me, and indeed the number he gave me was a different number. I call the number he gave me and it was the online helpdesk. Excellent! But after explaining my problem he says that is a billing issue, you need to talk to the billing department, the number is xxx-xxx-xxxx. Well, that is the number I just talked to, twice!. I tell him this and he says, yes, this is indeed the people I need to talk to about billing issues. OK. I call the number he gave me (the same number) and I get another Indian gentlemen. I explain my problem and he says that is an online issue, I need to talk to the online helpdesk. Stop, I say! I just talked to them and they say I need to talk to you. That can't be he says, we can't pull up any online transactions, only they can do it. But they can't do it either, I claim. OK - he will call them and they will get to the bottom of this. I am put on hold. 10 minutes letter I am talking to someone new, I don't know what department they belong to, I explain my problem and he says, Oh, that is a billing issue, I will transfer you to the billing department. (I have now deduced that this gentleman was with the online helpdesk!) Oh no you won't, you want to transfer me to xxx-xxx-xxxx don't you? Yes, he says. Well they sent me to you! What is going on here? Hold on. He says. Another 10 minutes later he returns: you need to go online and e-mail your question, that is how all online support is done. Well at least now I know. Mind you, this is not a bash on Indians, per se, It is a bash on companies that think offshore, hence convoluted, customer support paths are cost effective. They are not. I had a very high opinion of Intuit but now I'm just frustrated. Until we let these companies know that customer service cannot be slighted (by taking our business elsewhere) they will continue to do it. kpg PS - I just installed QuickBooks 2005. Oh well.     - Prep Logic tests are worse than worthless. I do not say this lightly. I have been using the PrepLogic practice test that comes with the ExamCram2 book for 70-270. Approximately every third question is just simply wrong. Here are some examples. One question asks about the second alarm that goes off when the power levels in your laptop are too HIGH! This makes me think the question was written by someone who is not a native english speaker. One question asks which command line switches are not available when using the WINNT.EXE command to install Windows XP. It claims that the /s: is not available and the explanation points out that it is only available for use with the WINNT32.EXE command. Three questions later a similar question asks which switches are not available with the WINNT32.EXE command. That question claims that the /s: switch is not available and is only available with the WINNT.EXE command. Simply running both of these commands with the /? switch quickly proves that the /s: switch is available with both commands. As a matter of fact, it is the ONLY switch that is available for use with BOTH commands. Some questions still refer to Windows 2000 (and not in a historical sense). And others are obviously cut and pasted from older tests. There are far too many other examples to list here. Suffice it to say that using these practice tests will actually be detrimental to your studies. Even if you try to use them to help you find areas in which your knowledge is weak it will be a waste of your time. They are so unreliable that you will start to mistrust what you do know and waste time re- researching those facts when you could have been studying something else. P.S. I did look for updates to this test. It is over a year old and there were no updates available. this tells me that they just simply don't care.     - Exchange 2003 Server I've just installed Exchange 2003 Server (SP1) on Windows 2003 Server. I'm having a problem sending email to Hotmail.com & other domains. The error is 'The connection was dropped by the remote host'. What's strange is that sometimes it works using Outlook 2003 client. It always fails using OWA.     - Yet another contradiction My Exam Cram 2 book on 70-270 says you don't have to reapply service packs if you install a new service on an XP Pro machine. However, I just took a practice test yesterday that says you do. I am sure the test said it was for the 70-270 test but it is clear that they just copied the question from their Win2k pro test without updating it. I would have no problem learning all this material if it weren't for all the contradictory information out there. It is getting really frustrating!!!     - 70-290, domain admin logon problems I saw a question asking what should be done if a local computer is added to a domain, the network connection is fine, the local admin can logon, but the domain admin can't logon.     - 70-290, internet authentication mode I don't have access to my win serv 2003 box right now, so could someone help me with the following question I saw about the exam: the question asked what authentication mode was needed in order that a user, belonging to a group that has access permissions to a resource, does not get prompted to enter a username and password when they try to access the resource. The existing conditions included the anonymous user with a password, digest authentication, and basic authentication. I reason that the integrated windows authentication should be allowed in order to avoid the prompt. The way I see it, the only other thing that could cause a prompt would be if the anonymous user is not enabled, or if the user doesn't have access to the resource.     - 70-290 shadow copies question I am not sure of the best answer for one of the questions I had: The question clearly required you to enable shadow copies on a volume, but it was a two part answer, and the first part was related to where the shared folder would be: - we could put it in the system root. - or we could create a new volume and put it there. I chose the second option, because I found it weird to put anything in the system root, but is there another explanation for this. I don't know if there is anything that would prevent you from puting the shared file in the system root and allowing share copies on the system volume.     - Anyone heard of ExamForce? Hello, Has anyone heard any feedback positive or negative about the ExamForce adaptive testing software for MCSE preperation. I have a really good deal on the table to get a lifetime subscription to all of their Microsoft material.     - 70-290, properly answering access permission questions I had a headache today after failing the exam with a 678 (missing only one or two questions). How are you supposed to answer permission access questions? should you explicitely deny write permissions when a person is only allowed to read from a file or folder, or should you just leave it blank and simply allow the read permission? I am a thorough person, when someone should only be allowed to read from a file I prefer to deny him write permissions so that he doesn't get access if he is moved into a group or inherits from a containing folder. What is the proper approach? I think these were the questions that killed me, I must have had about 7 questions like this. If I got them all wrong, then I know why I failed today. You sit down expecting the worse, but what you get is a smooth sliding, fart-less masterpiece that breaks the water with the splash-less grace of an Olympic high-diving champion. You use the toilet tissue to find that it was totally unnecessary. It makes you feel that all is right in the world and that you are in perfect harmony with it. The Beer Dump Nasty! Depends upon the dumper's tolerance and is the result of too many beers - doesn't matter if it was 2 or 22. What you get is a sinister, lengthy, noisy dump accompanied by an odious malevolent fog that could close the bathroom for days. Naked flames are ill advised..... The Chilli Dump (aka The Japanese Flag) Hot when it goes in and napalm when it comes out. It stays with you all day stinging yer ring and generally making your choccie starfish feel like the Shuttle's heat shield. Also makes your ass look like "a Japanese Flag". The Empty Roll Dump Relief - you've finished and reach for the tissue only to find an empty cardboard cylinder staring back at you. Panic overcomes you. You could use the curtains but then someone would ask "where are the curtains?" Use the rug? Nah, too bulky and cumbersome. You then come to the same conclusion that every "empty roll dumper " must face.....pull up yer kecks tighten yer cheeks and shuffle yourself to the nearest loo roll. Failing that you could always use your shirt-tail or one of your socks! The Splash Back Dump This one drops like a depth charge creating a column of cold water that washes your sphincter with a startlingly unpleasant shock. Now your wet - and embarrassed if the column of water went half way up your back. Tip of the day: blot instead of wiping. The Childbirth Dump This one is just too big to go through the aperture provided by nature for this purpose. You sit there thinking over your dilemma. First it hurts, and then gets no better. You sweat violently and wonder if you'll ever see your loved ones again. You imagine the newspaper headlines screaming "Man dies trying to hatch monster loaf!" There are only three things you can do: 1. Scream 2. Call an Obstetrician 3. Hope to hell you've got some Vaseline to help you get through it. The Machine Gun Dump Best utilized in public conveniences. You sit there in sublime peace when suddenly you emit a group of noisy gassy bursts that break the tranquility like machine gun fire. The guy in the next cubicle hits the floor like a Vietnam veteran, cradling his umbrella like a M16....damn commies. The Sound Effect Dump You feel a noisy one coming on but relatives, friends or work mates are within earshot. So, you must employ some clever techniques to cover the disgusting sounds you are about to emit. Timing is of the essence. At the precise moment of release, try the following: 1. Flush the toilet 2. Drop loose change on the floor, 3. Sing the first two stanzas of your favorite opera. The Cling-On Dump You've finished but there's one damn morsel that refuses to drop. You grip the seat with both hands and wriggle. You twist and pump but the little bastard just hands there, suspended, clinging like a canned peach between you and the water below. If only you had some scissors....... The Whole Roll Dump No matter how much you wipe, it just isn't enough. You blow the whole roll and have to flush at least a dozen times. The whole episode is consumer waste. Eventually if your toilet paper runs into minimal supply anything will do, towels, wash clothes, carpet, walls, whatever it takes. The Encore Dump Ahhh, you've done, so you wipe, dress, flush, wash hands and are about to leave the auditorium when you feel another dump coming on. You must therefore return for a curtain call. The world record is seven encores..... The Houdini Dump You go, you stand to flush and it has disappeared! Did it creep down the pipe or did you dream the whole thing? Should you flush?
