Tech Forum
I've started a tech forum for everything from tech questions to general
computer talk (ie geek speak) if anyone would like to come over and join. I
have a few of these that I am a regular in for some of my hobbies and just
thought a tech forum would be great. I would love to hear some of your
opinions and any suggestions you may have on different topics.
I am not making any money on this or trying to push anything like that. As a
matter of fact if usage gets too high I may have to pay more for bandwidth.
But that would be ok.

OT: Tuesday Telephony
Just got a phone call from one of our recieving clerks. Apparently, she just
got off the phone with one "Brian Dawn". The phone rang, she picked it up,
and this guy immediately asked her if she was near a printer. She said yes,
asked who it was, and he gave his name. No company, nothing. Just his name.
So he asked her to go read the model number and serial number off the back
of her printer. While she was writing them down so she could tell this guy,
her boss, thankfully, interrupted her, asked her what she was doing, and
stopped her. He told her that he should be transferred to the IT department.
So she went back to the phone to transfer him, and he was gone. WTF? I could
chalk it up to a wrong number, but how would he have not realized it was the
wrong number when the receptionist had to greet him and transfer him? Now,
there's not too much crazy stuff one can do with a HP serial number, but I'd
rather that kind of information stay in-house. So I never got to talk to
this guy. That would've been fun. Anyone else had anything like this happen,
or was it truly a mistake? What could he possibly have wanted with model and
serial numbers? Hopefully world domination, but I find that situation
unlikely.

Domain Problem
Hi everyone,
I'm still studing for MCSE certification and I just found a problem in my
new work I can't solve. The problem is as follows:
We have a Windows 2000 Server domain and The domain has Windows 2000
Professional desktops. Not all the clients are conected to the Domain but the
desktops conected to the domain are having problems. When they are booting,
during the "Starting network conections" message they keep starting conection
and they never let you start sesion. This not happend if the user unplug the
network cable and plug it again after the "Push ctr+alt+del to start a
session". Can you give me a hand? Thanks in advance!!! Tag: OT Thursday Tasty Tag: 185714

MCP>MCSA>MCSE + Security exam order advice need.
Hi and thank you for any input you may be able to give.
I have taken the 270, 290 and will be taking the 291 next week. Now here is
my dilemma. I'm not sure where to go from there. From my point of view, I
think it would be beneficial to take the 299 next. That would then give me my
MCSA and is also a requirement for my MCSE. From there, I would take the 298,
followed by the 293 and then 294 for my MCSE certification. And later I could
either 227 or Comptia's Sec + for my + Security designation.
From the posts I have read, most people take them in numerical order.
Unless I'm missing something, I think my plan above would be better suited,
in that you receive your MCSA after your 4th exam, rather than at the same
time as your MCSE, if you went in numerical order.
Am I missing something here? Any commends or suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks,

Configuration question
I am an MCSD not an MCSE, as such I need help to set up my home network with
a web presence. I have a static IP address from my DSL provider, Sprint. I
want to expose a machine (and only 1) on my home/office network for web
access. The machine is running XP Pro. I have been running IIS for local
testing only. How do I go about exposing the target machine. My DSL modem
is wireless to my home network, however, to the machine I wish to expose I am
hardwired. All the machines on my nework, both hardwired and wireless
current have IP address like 192.168.-.- So how I do expose the one machine
and what is the best way to protect all my machines from unwanted intruders?
I tried to post this request a while ago, but not sure where it got posted,
so it this appears twice in the MCSE forum, I appologize. Additionally, if
this is the wrong forum, I appologize and will repost to the forum that is
recommended. Tag: OT Thursday Tasty Tag: 185608
System Configuration for MCSD person who is not an MCSE
I am not sure if this is the correct forum for this question - I generally

I have a static IP DSL address in my home. However, my supplier has provided
me with a wireless DSL modem. I want to have a web presents with one of my
machines on my local home network. All my home machines have a 192.168.-.-
address. How can I expose one of my machines so I can run IIS on it. The
machine is running XP Pro and has IIS installed. I talked to my provider,
Sprint, but they refused to assist. I only want to expose the single machine
and not any other machine. Sprint did mention something about permitted a
port access on their DSL modem. I assume that it will be port 80. Where
might I find the answers I seek? Tag: OT Thursday Tasty Tag: 185607

MCSE Security Question
My boss and I have been looking into advancing my certs into the Security
side of the MCSE program and an important question was asked by management.
Is it better to do a self study program or actually attend class?
Most of my training has been with a book and a few
computers/routers/switches. For those of you that have taken any of the
security electives with Microsoft, what is your opinion?
In your opinion is it better to start with the security + from CompTIA or
would you skip it?
I feel I can do most of the work on my own with a book and not have to spend
the money on class room training and hotel expenses. But I also don't want to
miss out on any good "tech tips" from someone that has experience in this
section.

Question about MCSA 2K3 > MCSE 2K3
I've searched the web and have not yet found an answer to this question
(my apologies if it has already been asked and answered).
Do I understand this correctly?
To get an MCSA in Windows 2003 I must take 4 tests:
1. [core: networking] 290 (mandatory)
2. [core: networking] 291 (mandatory)
3. [core: client] 270 (my choice)
4. [elective] 284 (my choice)
Then to upgrade to MCSE in Windows 2003, I must take 3 more tests:
5. [core: networking] 293 (mandatory)
6. [core: networking] 294 (mandatory)
7. [core: design] 297 (my choice)
Thank you for your assistance,

OT: Friday Fate
So I get home tonight and the Winter 2005/6 issue of Spectrum Magazine is in
my mailbox. Spectrum Magazine is for parents of children with autism and
developmental disabilities.
On the cover is the picture of an actor I do not recognize.
The feature article is called "'Wanted' Man Gary Cole Speaks Out on Autism."
I'm like "Um, okay, another actor with an autistic child."
So I read the article. And in the first paragraph I'm informed just who
this actor is.
Keep in mind, I've only seen Office Space once, and I missed the first part
of it. If I ever see it for sale somewhere, I'll be sure to pick it up.
How was I to know that Gary Cole played "Bill Lumberg" in "Office Space?"
Gary has a 12-year-old daughter who was diagnosed as autistic at the age of
18 months. She's twelve now. It's a nice interview. Just that one
reference to Office Space, though.
He's also recently starred in a new movie called Mozart and the Whale, which
I'd heard about but had no idea he was in it. It's a story about two
autistic adults, and he plays the male adult's boss. The story was written
by the guy who wrote Rain Man, and is based on a real person.
Anyway, a shout-out to my bud, Chris, who reads this newsgroup every day
from work, but rarely ever posts, and also has a daughter with autism.
Does anyone know how I can get Gary Cole's e-mail or snail mail address or
if that's even possible? Tag: OT Thursday Tasty Tag: 185527

Win 2k Server and the Services will not stop.
Has anyone any idea about this problem im having? Its a Win 2k Server and
the Services will not stop.
They go into a stopping state then timeout and stay in a stopping state,
they never get to stopped. It's all services too not any particular ones.
It is attached to an APC UPS which i wouldnt have believed but on the
website it does state that v6 of there software can cause this and recommend
going onto v7.
Ok but on installing v7 it needs to create 2 new agent services and yep
you've guessed it, it cant!
Not onsite now, but any ideas how to rectify this? I dont think it will
allow me to install in safe mode or would it? Or anyone else got a link to
any knowledge base re the services as I can't for the life of me find one.
Or is it something else?

College degree or Certification?
Hi there,
In the IT world, which one of college degree or certification is more
important, provided the person has enough job experience in the field? My
guessing are college degree (above associate or bachelor) can advantage to

MS Self-Paced Training Book for 70-292 & 70-296 Observation
Hi all. This is my first post here.
I'm currently reading the Self-Paced book for 70-292, and found a very
questionable paragraph in "Recovering From System Failure" on page 13-41.
Here it is:
"Performing a system state backup automatically forces the backup type to
Copy, although the interface might not indicate that fact. Take that fact
into consideration when planning whether to include other items in your
backup selection."
This to me sounds like if you try to do a normal, incremental, differential,
or daily backup of data in the same job you're doing a System State backup,
the whole job will change to a copy backup with no notice.
This didn't sound right to me, so I did a test on my Win 2K3 test network.
What it does is it backs up your data with whatever method you chose, then it
changes to copy for the System State backup.
Just FYI if you know anyone studying out of this book.
