QOD for October 2nd 2003
Robert has been unable to make a connection to one of the file servers on
the network all day. He can ping the server, but cannot make a useful
connection to it. You know that George, one of the administrators, was
looking at increasing security between computers on the network. What could
be the reason that the connection cannot be made?
1.. The server is offline.
2.. The server is configured for a higher minimum SMB signing level than
the client and thus is refusing the connection.
3.. The TCP/IP stack on the server is corrupted.
4.. The DNS cache on the client computer needs to be flushed.
The answer comes tomorrow at...

MCSE exam advice needed
Hi,
I'm pursuing the MCSE 2000 certification and have passed 3, 215,228
and 270.
Apart from taking the other 2 Core exams 216 and 217 I will also be
taking the 224 Exchange server exam.
I would appreciate any advice on what design exam I should study/take
as I do not want to take one that is not going to be useful.
I was thinking of the 226 Web design as there seems to be a lot of
emphasis on Web technology at the moment.

Exam scores
Have Microsoft reverted to giving scores for MCP exams? Somebody I know has
recently started towards MCSE and took the XP Professional exam twice. On
both occasions he was given a score at the end of the exam. I was under the
impression that all the exams were simply PASS/FAIL now.

DNS problems with new active directory home lab
I am studying for the 270 test as my first Microsoft exam. I am
concentrating on XP Pro, but I need to setup a Server 2003 server that will
be the domain controller, and DNS server, then later an RIS server for the
lab.
The lab network is connected to a Linksys router that's connected to a cable
modem. The Linksys also provides DHCP and internet access for the
workstations on the network. I set up the server to have a static address
and it also needs internet access.
I have an XP workstation and a Win2k laptop.
The Win 2k laptop is connected via wireless and when I try to join it to the
domain I am prompted for a user name and password as expected. However, the
XP workstation is connected to the Linksys router via an ethernet cable, and
is unable to see the domain. (I would have expected to have more problems
with the wireless Win2k laptop.)
I was trying various DNS server settings and I can't get the XP Pro
workstation to see the domain controller. I finally formatted the server
and I'll try again later with all the default settings again.
I really did not want to spend so much time configuring the server since I
am just trying to do the workstation exercises for now.
What are the minimum basic steps you need to do with the DNS server setup so
that the computers on the network will be able to resolve the server's host
name and join the AD? It looks like leaving everything at default doesn't
work. Tag: Taste this correction package Tag: 99207

NEW NEWSGROUP PROPOSAL: microsoft.public.cert.exam.comptia
This is a petition to see how many of my fellow microsoft.public.cert.exam.*
newsgroups patrons wish to see a microsoft.public.cert.exam.comptia
newsgroup added to the Microsoft news server.
There's been a bit of a back-and-forth lately over posting questions about
CompTIA exams in MCSA and MCSE-specific newsgroups. Four CompTIA certs are
now accepted as electives for the MCSA and/or MCSE certs. It seems that
Microsoft should add a CompTIA-specific newsgroup to its own news server to
complement the existing alt.certification.a-plus,
alt.certification.i-net-plus, and alt.certification.network-plus public
newsgroups. Such a new newsgroup would be home for all questions about the
CompTIA certs accepted by Microsoft.
Give a reply if you think so or not. Tag: Taste this correction package Tag: 99192

70-218 vs 70-217
I have already 210, 215 and 216
What do You advise to do next
218 to MCSA and later try 217
or forget that and try only MCSE and do only 217?

I need one more exam for my MCSE in W2K. The problem is,
I am so tied up at work and have not been able to even
study. I should have taken my last design exam and
received my MCSE almost a year ago.
Does anyone know when Microsoft is going end the W2K
testing, and only offer the 2003/XP testing?
Thanks, ck. Tag: Taste this correction package Tag: 99142

Is it better to go for 2000 or 2003 ?
I have 3 options:
Self Study - Book's and PC's
Boot Camp
CBT Study from one of the training companies...
What do you think is the best way to go ?
How long does it take, I can give 8 - 10 hrs per week...

70-215 Study stuff
Looking for help! I'm going for the 70-215 test and I have already taken
it once and failed. I thought I was ready for the exam but there was
question on the exam that I read nothing about. I have studied from the
Core4 books and I even got cd's from Serebra to study from. Is there
another book that I should study?
