Hi
My question is the following:
If I segment a network and create subnets, do I have to install servers on each side?
I actually have servers in one side, of course
Thanks

The TCP/IP protocol doesn't care if there is a server there or not. You may
however have to put certain services on the subnets, or forward those
packets across the subnets (not recommended), in order for your network
services to work for those clients.

not nessessarilly. it also depends heavily on the hardware you have and the
network services you are using.

since we are on a ms ng we will assume you are running winnt/2k/2k3
servers. so in your case, the use of dhcp and wins are a big factor.

p.s. this is my last serious post of the day.

My apologies if I have inadvertently breached the newsgroup netiquette. I enjoy the slashing wit and humorous comments that your group comes up with. They brighten my day and also provide me with great inspiritation when dealing with the collection of clueless users that are here. Even if I cannot comment out loud on the silly mistakes and other unique maneuvers when they use their computers at least I can mutter it under my breath.

You might want to quote the text in your replies. Spock was not directing
his reply to you, he was answering your question as to what it would take
for Rowdy to post a frivolous one. He said it would take a post from a
troll. Spock was not calling -you- a troll.

I don't think you have done so. My simple post of "A troll" was not calling
*YOU* a troll but was an honest answer the question you posed: "If that was
your last serious post, what would you need to help you send a frivolous
one?" The answer is "A troll is what he needs to help him send a frivolous
one".

*If* you get flamed in here it will be due to questions that reflect little
experience with Microsoft products you are attempting to get certified on,
or little attempt on your own accord to answer a simple question. If you get
flamed for other questions, it is because someone disagrees with you
politically or ideological, and does not reflect the opinion of the entire
group.

Enjoy your time here.

I was just trying to be careful. Yours is the first group I have ever posted to and I realize that there many things that I do not understand about newgroups and posting to them. I would rather not offend or act like a complete newbie so I might be a "tad" sensitive towards doing the wrong thing. I am being honest in saying I enjoy the banter and wit that seems to flow here. It is not often I get to "watch" and "talk to" a group of highly intelligent people as they socialize.

On a side note the LnkWizard comes from the early days of the home PC, I was a member of PC Link and actually used a 300 baud modem to connect and chat with other people. I've liked the username and have kept it since then.

Wow... we're highly intelligent people! :-) thanks.

A fellow dinosaur! See, we're not extinct yet.

My first modem was a Cermetek 1200 baud. I held out on the 300 bauds
because I saw the 1200 baud being demonstrated at a PC user's group meeting
back when I lived in Silicon Valley. It was unreal to see two computers
side-by-side, one with a 300 baud modem, and one with the BLAZING FAST 1200
baud, both connected to BBS systems, and of course the 1200 one displaying
screens FOUR TIMES AS FAST!

I had to buy one. They were only asking $100 when the Hayes 1200 was going
for nearly $500. I also grabbed a 20 MB hard drive about a year later for
$500 when they were going for well over $1,000.

Ouch! Glad I wore my highly dangerous and ecologically incorrect asbestos pants today

Unfortunately, with where I live, it is the lack of intelligent people. Most of the folks I get to deal with are hard pressed to walk and talk at the same time and believe me chewing gum is out of the question. Plus, if several intelligent people get together the Governor thinks there is a conspiracy going on
