How can you be a professional if you have no job? Doesn't "professional"
imply that you're getting paid for something? And if you're getting paid
for something, that something is a job, no?

"American Firms Rip Off Indian Workers"

[Dateline: Bangalore, India Dec 1/03] Top American executives admitted today
that they have found a new source of unlimited profit; cheap offshore labor.
"Those Indian suckers, uh, I mean, those highly skilled Indian workers will
work for peanuts!" says Ima Bandit, CEO of Gluttonware, inc.

The average Indian is doing the same job that, in the U.S. would pay 8 to 10
times more, and would also include heathcare insurance and a retirement
plan. "Heh heh," says Bandit, winking his one good eye, "My bonuses alone
this year will be more than the GDP of most countries! And I owe it all
those dumb-ass, I mean, hard-working dot-heads, I mean, uh, well, you know
what I mean."

"It's true!" says Ben Demover, an executive with Bleedemdry Systems, Inc.
"If the Indians we hire here ever figure out what they should be earning, it
would really hurt my stock portfolio."

Not Likely To Happen

I does not appear that any attempt to educate the locals here will succeed,
however. We asked several executives if they were worried that the Indian
workers would rebel for more equal pay with their American counterparts.
"Naw, these dot-hea...uh I mean, highly skilled workers are too f'n stupid
to.....uhhh, What I mean is, are too dedicated to their work ethic, to do
anything like that!" Claimed Mo Bucks of Envirowaste International. "I'm
gonna buy my own Caribbean island with my bonus this year!" He further
boasted.

So it appears that the trend will continue for the foreseeable future. Truly
a grand time for all. To paraphrase Mel Brooks, "It's good to be CEO!"

I'm just waiting for the Paki's and Indian's to nuke each other. Then
watch all the companies who set over expect uncle Sam to bail them

this also is good:

For all its R&D labs, India remains visibly Third World. IT service exports
employ less than 1% of the workforce. Per-capita income is just $460, and
300 million Indians subsist on $1 a day or less.

A profession needs to be recognized by a professional body before a
professional can be called one!

True,,, but now that manufacturing is gone,,, over 60% of the US economy is
service based... What else is there after service is gone? They way I see
it,,, most US companies no longer look for 'only' the good old 'experienced'
individuals. They are now more than ever, ready to grab fresh blood and mold
them the way they want. They would rather hire a freshy simply because not
set bad habits, cheap, and fresh ideas. I have relatively low experience (13
years) in IT and it worries me. For example, one of my friends is working
for a tech company (350 employees). The company consists of 70% developers.
All of these can easily be replaced by developers in India or other foreign
markets reducing company's cost by 50-70%.

Just my $0.02.

I can't disagree with that article much, but there will
ALWAYS be a need for people in the US to be physically
near the computers to do work.

I make my living in the server room (mostly anyway - I'm
jack of all trades now at a smaller company) and I don't
see that need being shunted overseas. Admittedly there
are an abundance of programmers and math/science students
in India but if the US wants to be competitive, we need a
better foundation and education here in the US, rather
than simply demanding that jobs be kept here.

What's wrong with being competitive?

That's the very reason WHY they are taking jobs. They can
afford to be paid much less than here in the US and
they're relatively wealthy in their home country. You
don't need to make an equivilent of $50-75,000 or more to
live VERY WELL in India.
