    - Setting userid and password when calling remote MTS component Hi folks. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently sitting with an architectural/security problem on one o my client's applications. I have an MTS component on a Windows NT server. I exported thi component's package and installed the stub on the Windows 2000 clien workstation. I have a VB 6.0 app that instantiates this component o the client. Problem: The client and workstation are in different domains and ther is not a two way trust between the two domains. However, I'm told tha if I could programmatically specify a valid userid and password for th server when instantiating this component it'll work. I'm still busy searching for more info on the net, but all I found s far is using the SecurityProperty of the object context. This onl returns values for who created or instantiated the component. Hello all, I have one technical question that I don't know to solve, please advise: Scenario: We send ICMP echo packets to a targeted computer and to receive the ICMP echo reply packet if the targeted computer is online. This can be done by using PING command. After issuing the PING command, we can issue the ARP command to check the Ethernet address that has been cached in our computer, thus establishing the IP address to Ethernet Address correspondence. But this approach can only handle single computer. For multiple computers, we will have to do it one by one and the process will be slow to scan ALL the computer in the LAN segment near us.     - MSCE 2000 to 2003 upgrade path confusion I passed 70-292 yesterday, I was under the impression that just that single exam would update my MCSA to 2003 since I am already a MCSA/MCSE on win 2000. Now I see that I also have to take additional exams (293 and 294) Is this correct. Will the CCNA or network+ count towards either of those? I am looking now and 70-296 is all I need for MCSE, so it doesn't seem worth the study time and expense of two more exams to get a 2003 MCSA. Anybody more fimilar with the upgrade process that can clear this up. It looks like all I need is 70-296 for 2003 mcse but want to be sure.     - Server 2003 or Space Cadet 2003? Here's an oddity: Server 2003, set up as a DC in a little test forest with no other DCs, has lost track of about 30 gigabytes of information contained in 6 partitions on the second (IDE) hard drive in the system. Now, 4 of those partitions are clones of partitions on the primary drive, all of which contain operating systems, and one of which is a clone of the Server 03 partition. I just discovered this. It wasn't happening the first couple weeks after the second drive was installed. 03 saw all of the partitions with their labels and their drive letters and data in both Explorer and Disk Management. In Explorer, the partitions simply don't show up. In disk management, however, I see all the partitions. The disk is shown to be online (it's basic) and all the partitions are marked healthy, but they have no labels and they have no drive letters. All the partitions are, however, shown to be the correct size and to be formatted with the correct file system. But none of the programs or data is recognized - all the partitions are shown to have all the space available. And this includes the partitions that have only data and no OS on them. Rescanning the disks had no effect. I haven't had much chance to look into this yet, except that a quick scan of the event logs seemed to show that at one time 03 was trying to replicate Sysvol on the first drive to the Sysvol on the second drive, as if it thought this were another DC in the domain. That seems as if it might have something to do with the problem, but I haven't followed up yet. Nor have I checked DNS configuration, Has anyone run into this? I have had, and know others who have had, multiple partitions (clones) of the same server OS set up as DCs under NT and 2000 and have not come across this kind of problem. But maybe there's a simpler cause that I'm simply overlooking. What really seems odd is that it fails to see the data, the labels and the drive letters on all the partitions on the second drive, not just the one that's a clone of itself. And, of course, that it is correct about the other info concerning the partitions. The other OSs on the computer, 2000, 2000 Server and XP Pro, have no such problem, even though copies of their SYSVOLs exist on the second drive as well. Any ideas? TIA Mike Tag: VPN Server?     - Passed my last exam... ...and now I'm an MCSE! Arrived at the test center 15 minutes early - 8:45am and there were about 5 students in the reception area. So I waited my turn. 9am the proctor apologizes for the delay and continues to get everybody else setup. 9:15 he tells me he's getting dll errors and he's still waiting to download my exam. 9:30 he tells me they got hit with a virus and haven't successfully given a Prometric exam since Friday but he's going to try to download my exam again. THANKS FOR TELLING ME NOW! 9:45 he says it's not working, should he download again? No, I tell him, I'm going somewhere else. I'm ready for this exam NOW, I took the morning off work, and I'm finishing my MCSE TODAY! I call Prometric and have them reschedule me for another test center at 10:15 as I drive across town yelling at the slow drivers for getting in my way. 12:15 happy me strolls out with my 7th score report - MCSE done!     - Trouble with GPO's I have been asking this question in Windows SBS 2003 newsgroups so far to no avail, thought maybe someone here could help me. I have been trying to figure this out. I have Windows Server 2003, and I cannot get my personalized GPO's to work. My client PC's are XP Pro, I have added 1 restriction for 1 user, just to try to make it work. What I did is enforced Prohibit access to control panel (I figured it would be easy to check). I created a GPO named John Doe, then I put it last in the list under domainname.local, which happens to be 7. Upon logging on as John Doe the control panel is still present. I checked it on a client computer. The users are in the SBSUsers OU, and I put the GPO link in (MyBusiness/Users). What I want to do is be able to set restrictions on the users in my domain. I went into Group Policy Relusts, and upon generating results on this Policy, and under Applied GPO's it doesn't even show up, and under Denied GPO's, it also doesn't show up. What am I doing wrong?     - Problems with script Hi I am trying to run a script to report the installed software on remote machines. The script runs fine when I run it from my workstation against a remote machine on the same domain The network consists of several small windows 2000 single domain forests with a single windows 2000 server in each forest, and there are no trust relationships between forests. For many=20 reasons, computers are moved frequently (don=B4t ask me why)=20 so IP addresses are moving and/or changing, and IP=20 conflicts appear everyday coz there=B4s somebody trying to=20 join the domain without the right IP number assigned to=20 the PC (maybe HD is down, bad NIC, etc.) Now I want to know if a DHCP server is a good choice,=20 knowing that ISA server policies are based on IP ranges=20 and sometimes joined with usernames.     - My adventure in Microsoft today lol did a check to see what needed to be updated in the Windows Update... came up with the new cumulative security patch for my system... installed... rebooted... works fine... check again because there were more updates... 2 driver updates... one for my NVidia GeForce 4 MX 440 and another for my POS ESS Allegro onboard sound card. Did the update... reboots... CRASH!!! DLL32.EXE corrupted!! oh joy... what fun!! Had to do the following: 1. reboot 2. tried to boot into safe mode 3. run cmd 4. sfc /scannow 5. would not run so... 6. boot normal mode 7. steps 3 & 4 8. have ciggy 9. reboot 10. see corrupted file still existing 11. reset restore point to yesterday 12. reboot 13. ciggy 14. get drink 15. check drivers - good 16. check SP 1 - still there 17. check Windows Update - need same patch as earlier 18. reboot 19. ciggy - %^&&***&^!!%$#@@ MS makin me smoke so much 20. check Windows Update - saw the 2 drivers and thought ... If you had 1000 identical windows host computers , all running identical topology ( say the same ethernet ) , and a class A isp address assigned to the network : would there still be a reason to subnet into network segments ( given the server is windows also ) ?     - MCSA 2003 or MCSE 2000 first? I'm a 70-216 exam away from an MCSA 2000. My goal is MCSA 2003 as well as MCSE 2003. Should the order in which this is done be: MCSA 2000> MCSA 2003 upgrade> MCSE 2000> MCSE 2003 upgrade or MCSA 2000> MCSE 2000> MCSA 2003 upgrade> MCSE 2003 upgrade My concern is that if I do the MCSA 2003 upgrade right after the MCSA 2000, it will only cause confusion of trying to separate what functionality is in 2000 or 2003 when I go for the MCSE 2000. question is: I have an Access point router that serves as
my DHCP server and Gateway and Firewall? Do I need to have
a DHCP server running in my network or can my router give
out an IP address for the in coming VPN request? Or can
some one give me best practices for a home VPN setup.

where is the vpn terminating?
on the router or is it being port forwarded to an operating system e.g. XP
or to server OS 2k3?
on OS' you can set up an address pool for incoming vpn's
