    - I did tell Andy I sent a message to Andy about this a couple of days before I posted this message. I cannot imagine that Andy is the sole decision maker here. I think it took a few people to make this thing go. I also think that it is probably because they are so busy around there that no one really had time to check this out thoroughly. However, now that it is causing problems for lots of people, I think we need to fix it ASAP. That is why I posted messages in a few key places. I am hoping the people who are responsible for this see my messages and decide to do something about it. Everyone I have met who is involved in the process has always been fair and had the best interests of the community in mind. They just need to realize that this is NOT good and not really what they want.     - Great resume I see resumes all the time - most a somewhere between ok and really bad. I thought I would pass this resume from a Google UI designer. I found it while reading his blog this morning. http://fury.com/resume/resume_kevin_fox.pdf Why is it good? - It is simple and elegant. The text is visually balanced and he makes use of two frames for different information: employment history and enabling skills. Paragraphs are about the same size, and the use of bold and fonts is very nice. - Employment history has a nice balance of what he did and what he accomplished. - Writing style is easy-to-read (very little technical jargon) and focuses the reader's attention on key words/phrases to inspire confidence. Oh yeah - it is one page! If I were to interview him, he has given me a lot of things to ask about while at the same time has given me a pretty good indication of what I could expect of him as an employee. Well Done.     - New exam simulations are terrible! This is what Microsoft advertises: "Certification exams will now feature both traditional test items and simulated work environments where candidates will demonstrate their skills by performing real-world IT tasks." The truth is that there is NOTHING real-world about the exam simuations. You don't get to demonstrate anything. The interface doesn't work like the operating system and certain tasks cannot even be completed because certain buttons don't work. Seriously, the exam simulations suck! I took 70-290 and passed by a good margin. However, the exam simulations still suck because they don't work at all like the interface. As a matter of fact, I have read that they actually grade you down (MCP Magazine, Michael Domingo) if you take a different path than expected to complete the task. Rediculous! I tried to take some paths that were more efficient than what was expected and they didn't even work. Then, I had to sit there figuring out what the idiot who programmed the simulation thought I should do. These simulations are for monkeys, not administrators.     - New MS Security patches FYI, new security patches for Messenger, IE, Word, and Windows. OK, now for the fun part! *ring ring* "Hello?" "Hi, Ken. My laptop keeps rebooting." "OK, when did it start doing this? "Right now! I restarted it when it told me I had to." "When *what* told you that you had to restart? Did you install something?" "Yeah, the new updates it said to install." "Oh, alright then. I'll be in in a minute." ... turns out, the updates somehow corrupted something or other, and sent his lapdog into infinite reboot mode. But not the good kind, where it gives you a chance to enter safe mode or anything like that. The bad kind, where as soon as Windows starts to start, it shuts down and starts the whole process over again. In the meantime, while I was working this out, another user called me in (also with a laptop) with the same issue.     - Cisco Router and Windows Time I can't seem to get the router to pull time from the internet and be a time server for the internal domain. Router is stratum 2 for the internet, pulls time from internet and all other routers are happy and syncing. PDC e is stratum 2 time server, can't sync with router because its stratum 2 Change router to stratum 1 and now it can't pull time from the internet.     - OT: Call center blues Well, one of the joys of the offshore call center is that the world is now a much smaller place. This morning I went on a trip around the world - several trips actually - and it only took about 45 minutes. I had cancelled a subscription to an online accounting service, hosted by a well known small business software company, I won't mention their name (intuit), and it looked like they had doubled billed my credit card (it turns out they did not, but that is another story). So I go onto the web site, and like many companies these days there was no phone number to call, just an e-mail option. Well, I want to talk to a real person, so I call the number on my credit card statement. The man that answered the phone was obviously of recent Indian ancestry, but he was polite and asked how he could help me. I explained my situation, and he says it is an online issue and he gave me the number to the online help desk. I call the number he gave me and it was PayPal. OK, maybe I miscalled; no it was PayPal. So I call the man back, I get a different Indian this time, explained my problem, and he said it was an online issue and he will give me the number to the online help desk. Wait a sec, I say, The last guy gave me a number and it was PayPal. Paypal, that's not right he assured me, and indeed the number he gave me was a different number. I call the number he gave me and it was the online helpdesk. Excellent! But after explaining my problem he says that is a billing issue, you need to talk to the billing department, the number is xxx-xxx-xxxx. Well, that is the number I just talked to, twice!. I tell him this and he says, yes, this is indeed the people I need to talk to about billing issues. OK. I call the number he gave me (the same number) and I get another Indian gentlemen. I explain my problem and he says that is an online issue, I need to talk to the online helpdesk. Stop, I say! I just talked to them and they say I need to talk to you. That can't be he says, we can't pull up any online transactions, only they can do it. But they can't do it either, I claim. OK - he will call them and they will get to the bottom of this. I am put on hold. 10 minutes letter I am talking to someone new, I don't know what department they belong to, I explain my problem and he says, Oh, that is a billing issue, I will transfer you to the billing department. (I have now deduced that this gentleman was with the online helpdesk!) Oh no you won't, you want to transfer me to xxx-xxx-xxxx don't you? Yes, he says. Well they sent me to you! What is going on here? Hold on. He says. Another 10 minutes later he returns: you need to go online and e-mail your question, that is how all online support is done. Well at least now I know. Mind you, this is not a bash on Indians, per se, It is a bash on companies that think offshore, hence convoluted, customer support paths are cost effective. They are not. I had a very high opinion of Intuit but now I'm just frustrated. Until we let these companies know that customer service cannot be slighted (by taking our business elsewhere) they will continue to do it. kpg PS - I just installed QuickBooks 2005. Oh well.     - Prep Logic tests are worse than worthless. I do not say this lightly. I have been using the PrepLogic practice test that comes with the ExamCram2 book for 70-270. Approximately every third question is just simply wrong. Here are some examples. One question asks about the second alarm that goes off when the power levels in your laptop are too HIGH! This makes me think the question was written by someone who is not a native english speaker. One question asks which command line switches are not available when using the WINNT.EXE command to install Windows XP. It claims that the /s: is not available and the explanation points out that it is only available for use with the WINNT32.EXE command. Three questions later a similar question asks which switches are not available with the WINNT32.EXE command. That question claims that the /s: switch is not available and is only available with the WINNT.EXE command. Simply running both of these commands with the /? switch quickly proves that the /s: switch is available with both commands. As a matter of fact, it is the ONLY switch that is available for use with BOTH commands. Some questions still refer to Windows 2000 (and not in a historical sense). And others are obviously cut and pasted from older tests. There are far too many other examples to list here. Suffice it to say that using these practice tests will actually be detrimental to your studies. Even if you try to use them to help you find areas in which your knowledge is weak it will be a waste of your time. They are so unreliable that you will start to mistrust what you do know and waste time re- researching those facts when you could have been studying something else. P.S. I did look for updates to this test. It is over a year old and there were no updates available. this tells me that they just simply don't care.     - Yet another contradiction My Exam Cram 2 book on 70-270 says you don't have to reapply service packs if you install a new service on an XP Pro machine. However, I just took a practice test yesterday that says you do. I am sure the test said it was for the 70-270 test but it is clear that they just copied the question from their Win2k pro test without updating it. I would have no problem learning all this material if it weren't for all the contradictory information out there. It is getting really frustrating!!!     - 70-290, internet authentication mode I don't have access to my win serv 2003 box right now, so could someone help me with the following question I saw about the exam: the question asked what authentication mode was needed in order that a user, belonging to a group that has access permissions to a resource, does not get prompted to enter a username and password when they try to access the resource. The existing conditions included the anonymous user with a password, digest authentication, and basic authentication. I reason that the integrated windows authentication should be allowed in order to avoid the prompt. The way I see it, the only other thing that could cause a prompt would be if the anonymous user is not enabled, or if the user doesn't have access to the resource. I keep getting the following error when I run the smtpdiag tool on my
Exchange 2003 Server.

Error: Expected "220". Server is not accepting connections.
Failed to submit mail to mx4.hotmail.com.

What is causing this?

Have you telnetted to port 25 on mx4.hotmail.com to find out what the other
server is actually replying? Perhaps your IP address is in an RBL or otherwise
blocked by hotmail.

And, I'm pretty sure there are a dozen more suitable newsgroups than this
one where you might get people more familiar with Exchange, SMTPDiag and
other mail issues.
