I have been trying to find some kind of repair and
maintenance tool for Active Directory. Since it is a
database and databases require maintenance what tool can
be used for this? I have looked through several of my
Server 2000 books which mention nothing of repairing or
mainenance of AD. Within Novell I can use dsrepair.
Does Active Directory have a repair tool?

Thanks

Just what is it that you need to repair? AD is fairly robust, most
maitainice, database clean up handled automaticallly.

futzzing around inside AD is much worse than Registry editing.

Anyway, the utility you may be looking for is "ntdsutil", there is very
little independent documentation either for the use of the utility or for
the values.

There is also DSquery. there are others, but again the question comes
up...what are you trying to do and why?

all the information is readily available, you just need to ask the right
questions.

Get a copy of O'Reilly's Active Directory Second Edition by Allen and
Lowe-Norris. This is a pretty comprehensive book on Active Directory as
a whole and there is a section about backup, recovery, and maintenance of
the AD.

It has been my observation that all databases need repair.
Novell has been doing a Directory Service years before
Microsoft and they have a repair and maintenance utility.
I have used ntdsutil before, the only issue I have with
this is that I have to bring the system down in order use
this utility.
The reason I am looking for a repair utility is that I
have several Group Policy objects that are now failing. I
want to ensure that I am not having issues with AD before
I start redoing my GPO's.

Thanks for the information.

Besided ntdsutil, there are other that test, evaluate subsets. DCdiag,
Netdiag...

I understand that NetPro has released an automated AD utility that
evaluates/repairs Active Directory. I wrongly assumed you were looking for
MS resources. If you broaden your search, I think you will find other third
party programs that inspect, resolve or repair AD.

The Net Pro site indicated they have an evaluation copy that you can
request.

I do understand your point about most DB's needing periodic maintenace. And
quiet as its kept, MS AD is a blatant homage to the pioneering efforts of
Novell, but time moves on.

Thanks for the information. I will look into the products
your recommended. I also found information on tools for
GPO's through the www.gpoguy.com website. Looks like
Microsoft is starting to provide tools to assist in
getting basic issues resolved.

Thanks for the assistance.
