I have DHCP installed and setup correctly on my server. No problems reported,
the event viewer shows all is well. The problem is that no clients are
getting ip addresses and the server don't seem to to leasing them. I have

Woohoo!
Well, passed 291 today. Different testing centre from the last time and
the whole thing went without a hitch. That makes me an MCSA. CCNA next,
methinks. I'm getting a little tired of MS exams :-)
Passed with 700, when actually I thought I might have failed due to me
having to take an educated guess at more than one question. It's
certainly not the nicest MS test in the world!
Interestingly, I had the exact same problem as this guy had with a DNS
simulation question:
http://www.sadikhov.com/forum/Passed-70-291-Score-962_30107.html
I sent feedback for that question.
I also had another DNS sim question. The question involved two domains
and a DNS server in one. The thing was, the same of the domain was wrong
(i.e. the DNS server I was configuring was on abc.com and not xyz.com,
even though the question said that I had to configure the DNS server on
xyz.com...)
Anyway, in conclusion, MS need to test their sims more thorougly.

70-291 DHCP Question
Hello All,
My second first (see post '70-291 - Didn't fail!' on the 31st of May for
an explanation of that) attempt at 291 is on Tuesday.
I have a question regarding DHCP and DHCP relays - how does the DHCP
server know what set of configuration to serve to a client?
What I mean is, let's say we have a DHCP server that will serve two
subnets, with a DHCP relay on the remote subnet or a 1549 compliant
router in between. There are two scopes on the DHCP server, one for the
local subnet and one for the remote subnet.
Now, what confuses me is this - when the DHCP sever receives a
DHCPDISCOVER packet, it will just pick the next address from the free
pool of addresses and send it as a DHCPOFFER, yes?
So, how does the DHCP server know which scope to offer an address from?
Obviously if a DHCPDISCOVER packet is relayed from the remote subnet,
that client will need a different default gateway address. OK, we could
use client reservations, but the books I have make no mention of using
that in this situation.
Yours confusedly,

Global Scope
Hello there. I need someone to explain the differences between Domain
Local, Global and Universal Groups. I pick up concepts very quickly,
but this one just has me at a loss. I have read three separate study
guides and still cannot understand global scope.
The article I am in front of right now reads;
" ... The easier, more accurate and secure way to assign the
permissions needed would be to create a Domain Local group and assign
it the required permissions on the file shares. "
Which I completely understand. Very straight forward, if it ended
there...
" After doing this, the administrator could create a Global group and
place the 20 user accounts into that Global group. Adding the Global
group to the Domain Local group results in all 20 users inheriting the
Domain Local group's assigned permissions ... "
What? Why would you do that? Surely you would simply assign the users
to the Domain Local group, as outlined in the first paragraph. Why does
the Global group even come into play?
I really need some help on this one.
Thanks,
Luke O'Connell

Restore 2003 Server to Different Hardware
I'm trying to setup my disaster recovery plan for a windows 2003 server
running TS. It is
currently on old IBM hardware, but for disaster recovery I will need to know
how to restore to some later IBM hardware. What would be the best path to
bring the box back to life?
Any suggestions please?
For a test, I am currently in the slow process of installing 2003 on
different hardware and am going to restore the full backup over it from the
old 2003 server, then do a 'repair install' of 2003.
I'm not sure if this will work considering 2003 and TS licensing and other
issues to do with 2003.
However, I have (after much effort) successfully restored a 2000 Domain
Controller that had FSMO, GC, DNS and Exchange 5.5 to different hardware. If
anyone would like my notes on how I did this, let me know.
But at the moment, I'm trying to do the same with 2003.

Cannot Open the Stencil window using Controls
I am currently just testing out how to embed Visio within a Windows form.
I have the main FORM class that has these definitions:
public AxMicrosoft.Office.Interop.VisOcx.AxDrawingControl axDrawingControl1;
....
public Form1()
{
InitializeComponent();
Visio.Application visioApp = null;
visioApp = (Visio.Application) this.axDrawingControl1.Window.Application;
this.axDrawingControl1.Src = "C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft
Office\\Visio11\\1033\\blank.vsd";
Diagram diag = new Diagram(visioApp);
...
}
This code calls another class, called Diagram in which I programmatically
create a diagram. Unfortunately, I get a run-time exception on the last line:
...
docsObj = visioApp.Documents;
docObj = docsObj.Add("Basic Diagram.vst");
pagsObj = visioApp.ActiveDocument.Pages;
pagObj = pagsObj[1];
***stnObj = visioApp.Documents["Basic Shapes.vss"];***
...
For some reason, the stencil window does not load within the control or the
form and this is what is causing the exception.
This code works perfectly fine if I just run it w/in Visio, replacing the
line :
visioApp = (Visio.Application) this.axDrawingControl1.Window.Application;
with
visioApp = new Visio.Application();
Any ideas? Am I forgetting to set something within the control?
Thanks in advance,

292 Blues...
Ok, I just took the 292 for the second time. I knew that I was
underprepared the first time, so I worked on it in my spare time for a
couple of weeks. Felt much better about it, heard birds possibly chirping,
clicked "I'm done," and...
didn't pass.
Ok, not the end of the world. And I've seen much of the conversation here
about the difficulties. What I don't quite get is the scoring. There are
six categories on the test. Simply adding the bars together I was well over
the 70% (700 out of 1000) needed. But I did score lower than 70% on three
of the categories.
Do I need to:
1> Just quit whining and become perfect?
2> Bring all categories up above 70%?
3> Bring most (ie, 5) categories above 70%?
It's not as clear cut in terms of what skillset category I should focus on.
I might add that this one is particularly frustrating. Especially if you
add in the "there are some questions that don't count" issue. 40 questions,
equally spread would give 6-7 questions per category. In order to get 70%
means essentially getting 5 questions right. Add to that some of the
questions seem to be particularly squirrely in terms of scenario.
These scenarios may be more appropriate to real life, but real life doesn't
give you a 2 hour stopwatch.
Ah, well. Sorry if this sounds like whining (dusting myself off and getting
back on the horse). I absolutely understand and applaud the attempt to make
the certifications more meaningful by making the exams more challenging.
And I absolutely reserve the right, once I've passed it, to make
condescending comments about people who complain about the exam later on<g>.

test question
You are the network administrator for contoso.com. The network consists of a
single Active Directory domain named contoso.com. The company's main office
is in Tokyo, and it has a branch office in Osaka. Each office is configured
as an Active Directory site. The two offices are connected by a 128-Kbps
connection. All domain controllers run Windows Server 2003. All client
computers run Windows XP Professional. All network administrators are
located in Tokyo. Universal group membership caching is enabled.
The server roles and IP addresses for each site are below:
Site Server role IP address
Tokyo DNS, global catalog, WINS, DHCP 10.10.10.200
Osaka DNS, domain controller, DHCP 10.10.20.200
The network connection between Tokyo and Osaka intermittently fails. Only
the client computers in Tokyo have NetBIOS enabled. All client computers are
configured to use DHCP.
The significant DHCP scope options for Tokyo are below:
Scope option Setting
WINS/NBNS Servers 10.10.20.200
DNS Servers 10.10.10.200, 10.10.20.200
Router 10.10.20.1
You create a user account for a new employee in Osaka. The user report that
she cannot log on to the domain. You confirm that you can log on by using
your account and then by using the user's account. You also confirm that all
other users in Osaka can log on. You need to ensure that the user can
authenticate to the domain.
What should you do?
A. Configure the user's user account to store passwords by using reversible
encryption.
B. Configure the user's computer account to be trusted for delegation.
C. Force Active Directory replication to occur between Tokyo and Osaka.
D. Change the Router setting in the DHCP scope options to 10.10.10.1. Tag: Ping Kat! Tag: 165427

Hello,
I'm new to MS certifications, and am having difficulties finding out
exactly which exams I should take, and what certifications are available?
I was told that having an MCSE would be great to put on a resume, but
after looking up more information on MS's website, I found that there
were other exams that would probably be best to start with. Also, I read
somewhere that the A+ was a prerequisite for the MSCE.
I'm already pretty well versed in Windows XP, and have a lot of
experience working with Windows Server 2000 and 2003, but am wondering
where to start. I'm currently reviewing for the A+ (although I'm
extremely confident it will be a breeze...) I should have taken it years
ago, but didn't bother as I already had 6+ months experience and didn't
want to pay for it. But now, it seems that I should before I take the MS
certs.
Also, what makes you an "MCP", as I didn't see this as a separate
certification. From what I understand, passing nearly any of the MS
exams will give you this status. From the looks of it, it seems that the
MCDST would be a good place to start, as it seems to be the lowest level
of certification available.
Any ideas on where to start? And what exams are necessary for what
certifications?

SAVE YOURSELF TIME, MONEY, AND SUFFERING ON YOUR MCSE!
Folks, let's face the facts. The Microsoft MCSE tests are probably designed
so you will fail multiple times. Look at the history we see here... They are
laden with convenient software crashes, hordes of unnecessary paperwork,
numbers, and the burden of having to show up just so you can fail for
Microsoft's financial gain at your expense and your suffering.
Of course, pass or fail, your supervisor requires you to take these tests.
And there's a job later on that might require you to have a four letter word
like MCSE on your resume. In truth, admit it to yourself if not me, the
time, the struggle, the effort, the failure, it's not REALLY going to help
you to get that better job that you actually deserve, because there's a big
breasted blonde or the Vice Presidents rich nephew who will get it in spite
of your bosses promises and your obvious qualifications. But let's not dwell
on that fact. Let's look away from the bait and switch maneuvering that
comes from dealing with Evil, Incorporated, and the sickening bureacratic do
nothings that control Corporate America.
Instead, let's look for a SOLUTION.
Now that you know the test could be rigged, you've got to ask yourself, how
can I spare myself the wasted time and effort, the pain and agony of
repeated (albeit probably intentional and entirely not my fault) failure,
the extra days of waiting? How can I spare myself the potential impact on
my current deadline that will make me look bad at work like I can't get
things done? How can I spare myself the potential impact on my home life
and how my kids will despise me for missing little Jimmy's softball game
when I was working towards the fallacy of an (four letter word:) MCSE?
IS THERE AN ANSWER THAT WILL HELP ME AVOID ALL THIS UNDESIRABLE BOOLZH!T?
Yes, there is. The answer is to send someone else! The answer is
MICROCEPHALIC S. BOB's MCSE FAIL & BLAME SERVICE. YEAH! For a limited time
only, you can send ME in your place and I WILL FAIL FOR YOU. I'M GREAT AT

greasy people who breathe heavily behind you and smell like bad cheese, the
sneers and retorts, the noises, distractions, the uncomfortable sitting
position, and the software failures that are all probably part of a plan to
make YOU feel bad about yourself, a plan to make YOU hate your life, a plan
to STEAL YOUR MONEY AND HAPPINESS IN RETURN FOR NOTHING BUT A PIECE OF PAPER
AND A RECORD IN A DATABASE SOMEWHERE. Send me, and it will be my fault.
Send me, and send a message to them that YOU'RE HAPPY AS HELL AND YOU'RE NOT
GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!
Yes, with MICROCEPHALIC S. BOB's MCSE FAIL & BLAME SERVICE, YOU TOO CAN TAKE
THE DAY OFF. Get caught up on your deadline. See Jimmy's first bunt and

and board, a meal, and a disguise, I'll be the one to blame for your failure
the first two times you go take the potentially rigged test for that nearly
worthless MCSE. From the look of things, you would have failed twice anyway,

advice on setting up lab
Hello group
As I get deeper into my MCSE studies (currently concentrating on 70-291), I
am planning to set up a more advanced lab, which will enable me to practice
all the technologies required to pass this exam and future exams on the MCSE
track.
Im hoping that some of you experienced guys can give me advice on setting up
the lab?
I passed my previous MCP exams by linking an xp client to a server via a
crossover cable, but I would like to configure RRAS and web server
technologies.
The lab I am trying to setup is going to be all wireless, using a Netgear
DG834G wireless router and Belkin 802.11g PCI wirless cards installed in
servers and clients.
A static WAN IP address comes as standard from my ISP and I usually have
this address configured on the router along with NAT to provide security for
my home PCs.
I have purchased 2 public IP addresses from my ISP.
I have 2 DNS server IP addresses, which are supplied by my ISP.
There are 2 PCs available to use as a DC and member server.
When the lab is setup I would like it to be running in an Active Directory
Domain Environment using DHCP, NAT, SUS services, RRAS configured to run VPN
services and also be able to (maybe) host web applications on the internet.
I was going to install a second NIC into one of the servers for RRAS, but
not sure!
I would like to setup the server so that my client PCs will optain their IP
addresses dynamically and still be able to gain internet access. Would this
be possible by using one of the public IP addresses?
As I have said I am setting this lab up to use for my MCSE practice, but I
would still like the network to be accessible to members of the family.
Hopefully I have provided enough information here, but if not give me a
shout.
cheers
