Once Again I look back on the mcse track. I was wondering
what you all think about just starting the mcse 2000
track vs 2003? I currently have w2k experience but wonder
if it would be wise to study/put the time in for the w2k
and upgrade to 2003? Need Direction. Thanks Tag: Passed 70-216 Tag: 101008

At 4:02 pm October 27, 2003, precisely 24 minutes after I quit smoking,
bhileman@dasi-software.com has died. He didn't die from lung cancer, or
even a heart attack. He was put out of his misery by his owner as he was
suffering from Swen.

2003
Well I took my own advice and got back on the horse and passed 292
today. I knew I had to have been close yesterday. The exam today was
much easier and stuck to the MS guidelines and to the MSPress book
which reaffirmed my initial feelings for it as a study guide. I had a
lot of SUS, TS, Remote Admin, DNS(all the new stuff was hit on), and
auditing. All in all a very different pool of questions today. Not
nearly as wordy and not nearly as many exhibits today.
On to 296. How's 224 coming Jeff?

Mcse 2003
I had a piece of humble pie today. I failed 292. It really surprised me
with some of the questions but others I felt good about. I ran out of
time on the last 5 questions so I played guessaroo with them. I am
using MSPress which is good. I think I would have passed had I noticed
my time more closely. Oh well, either retaking tomorrow or Sat.
The test had lots of real world type questions and I had about 40-50%
of exhibits. They really wore on my nerves too. I got lots of Audit
policy, SUS, Remote Admin/Assistance, DNS, and some oddball questions
with VBScript and IPSec\SMB signing.

MCSE exams braindumps
Well I took and passed 70-292 today at a Prometric center. I noticed
that the testing program has been updated. On a number of the questions
I could have done with a MUCH larger screen as I couldn't see half of
the question in hand. Also one question that said see exhibit had no
exhibit button - had to take a big guess. So I noted it as I was going
to make a comment at the end. But strange things happened at the exam
end. I was not given the chance to comment and also it didn't even tell
me if I'd passed, only printed out the sheet.
Any one else had the same thing????

NT4/Exchange55 Mcse, Now what...
I got myself certified at my own expense in 98/99. MCSE in
NT 4 w/elective of TCP/IP and Exchange 5.5.
My employer has provided no training since then, nor do
they plan on doing any in the future.
I have been working with Win2k and 2003 as well as
Exchange 2000 but alas, my certs are fairly worthless to
go get a job anywhere with my current MCSE.
I am still working at the original job, but I would like
to find a place to at least supplement my education and
give me some advancement opps. I currently run the whole
show for the company.
I would like to know what is the best and most cost
effective way to make myself valuable to another company.
$13,000 is a bit steep to get to where I was (MCSE) for a
$60K a year job.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Rob Tag: Passed 70-216 Tag: 100983
you gave me a grin and a chuckle
well billy, I have to admit you've given me a grin and a
chuckle today. Thanks for that.
6 P an hour, hmm, lemme think.... uhm, I think I'd rather
cart grovery bags instead. At least the pay is better, its
unionised so you have a less likley chance of being sacked
for no particular reason unlike the IT contract world,
they get full benefits, tax breaks, paid lunch breaks, and
paid vacation time; all of which we don't get in IT.
Hmm, 6 an hour.... hmmmm, lemme think....
Oh yeah and working at "the mall" doesn't entail paying
for certification courses and exams nobody uses, has heard
of, or cares about just so long as you can print a 4
letter acronym on a resume that only means, "hey I'm broke
now".

Just in case any of you are wondering why I might start getting a little
crazier than I already was (yes, that is possible) I have exactly TWO (COUNT
EM TWO) cigarettes left in my pack. I thought I had at least one, maybe two
more packs in my briefcase and I am now having a MAJOR anxiety attack. I
promised the wife that I was quitting after this last carton, and it kind of
snuck up on me all of a sudden and I'M GONNA FREAKIN FREAK!
Please remember me as the nice, jovial fellow I used to be, not as the MEAN
SUMBITCH BASTARD that I am about to become (or already have).

Password Panic in Active Directory
System - Windows 2003 Server
Problem - I am unable to reset passwords in active
directory users & computers.
Symptom - I get an error message saying that I have not
met the requirements for complexity/length or history.
This happens either when creating new accounts in AD
logged on as Domain Admin, resetting existing account
passwords or even when logging on as a domain user to a
different station (on XP) and attempting to change a
personal (non-admin) user password.
There are NO policies in effect from the default site
policy down thro the sub-containers which affect account
password policy and running RsoP also confirms there are
no password policies in place.
I would apprecaite any suggestions as this worked a few
days ago and nothing seemingly has been changed other than
setting up and starting RIS. DNS & DHCP are functioning
OK, and it is a single DC. I am in a big panic as I need
to create 800 accounts by Monday!!

hey guys,

Certs and HR people...does HR know anything about certs?
1st off I'd like to say kudos and "about time" that a
certification was developed for the largest staffing
compliment within most large IT organisations, the
helpdesk/desktop teams.
Having said that, I see massive problems with this.
For at least a decade the HR world has beaten into the
heads of its non-technically inclined recruiters and
account managers that you can't present a candidate to a
15 dollar an hour IT job unless he/she has a valid MCSE
(Engineering) cert. While we all appreciate the
absolutely grotesque absurdity of a support tech needing
an engineering cert based on their job description and
career path having absolutely nothing at all to do with
engineering, the fact remains that your employed IT
Support people likely all have been forced to take, pay
for and pass the MCSE requirements just to get a job.
The HR world, moves slower than most as its staffed almost
exclusively with non-IT career folks who know only what
they read about in the news regarding IT certifications,
qualifications and trends. Enter the MCSA certification.
HURRAY!!!
Finally something about Administering a network rather
than how to build one. But do any HR people know about
this? How many contract companies do you think are
willing to admit that they've turned away qualified
administrators and instead hired engineers for server
admin, network Admin, LAN admin jobs based solely on
thinking an MCSE was the holy-grail catch-all one required
before getting one's resume looked at or indeed rescued
from the trash can?
Now we add a "Desktop Support" certification and might I
also point out that for some reason the
terminology "Desktop" seems to no longer be used.
Apparently HR folks have re-labeled things as Helpdesk II
or Helpdesk Support, or Support Analyst II etc... and when
you mention the term "Desktop Support" they say things
like "what's that?", or "never heard of that before",
or "oh you mean helpdesk!"
My main issue with this wonderful Cert which I applaud
whole heartedly and look forward to getting is this: how
many MCSE's are entrenched in Desktop Support... I
mean, "helpdesk" positions who have been trained how to
buil,d a network but not to administer or support one, and
how many contract, staffing, sourcing firms are going to
look at anyone without the sacred talisman and admit these
shortcomings, opting to hire staff with this new unknown
certification despite it being the defining qualifications
test of a productive support analyst?
Do we fire the MCSE's who are whoolly unskilled and
untrained in supporting a network or a desktop environment
being as they should have never been hired into support
and instead placed into the Infrastructure divisions where
their certifications would be valid, and replace the mis-
employed by those with the right qualifications?
Do we sit all the HR staffing people in a room and once
and for all try to teach them who is qualified to do what
and why and hope it actually sinks in being as these non-
IT people are in complete control over who gets the
interviews and who gets shunned?
How does one correct the indoctrination that MCSE is all
one needs to do anything IT related and disseminate new
policy that actually makes sense to people who can't think
for themselves and only look at resumes that contain "what
the end client specifically asks for"?
How do we re-educate the end clients all over the world
about why their own hiring practices are costing them
money and lowering their TCO strategies and present them
with a cost effective TCO solution with "the right cert
for the right task"?
Maybe I just think too much, but I've done work at
Building 25, at Texaco Corporate in Houston, been a NOC
manager for a Chevron company and done training for a MS
Atec and I still come up with almost every huge
multinational telling me I either need an MCSE for some 14
dollar an hour help desk job which is personally insulting
to say the least; or when I apply to Admin jobs with the
MCSA material I have taken they say things like "what's
that?", or "the client wants an MCSE not whatever you
have"? I get way too frustrated with IT managers who know
nothing about IT but have management jobs simply because
the group they used to manage over in finance, or sales,
or some other non-tech related division downsized and
he/she just happened to land in IT where they've managed
to screw up the entire inner workings of business flow,
productivity and have staffed with capable, but grossly
mis-placed employees.
Perhaps someone from MS or Volt redmond reading this would
like to shoot me an email and let me know what I can do to
help.
I live in Ontario Canada and was just offered a position
with Volt in Toronto for 17 bucks an hour doing phone
support work for MS SMS. Tell me that isn't insulting
considering I'm a seasoned US Fortune 100 IT Manager.
Is there anyone out there who can tell me how these new
Certs will work for me or how I can drive the re-education
of the HR people? I'll step up to the plate and run with
it. Anyone want to help me to help us all?
Anyone?

70-217
Hellow all. I will be taking the 70-217 real soon.
Just wanted to know if anyone has taken this exam recently; and if so:
- do you remember the # of q's?
- did you get a score at the end?
- pass mark?
- did you think it was easy or hard?
I took the 70-218 couple of weeks ago. I got a score & bar graph thingy at
the end. This was the first time i ever got one of these. I guess it's
true, too many people bitched and MS put the scores back in.
But, I am glad I didn't get a score for 70-216. he..he..
As always, all your replies & input are much appreciated.
cheers,

Multicast? what exactly it does? How useful it is?
Hi,
I have questions regarding the multicast scopes. From the book I read, I
understand it is for one-to-many network communications. But under what
situtations that we need to use multicast scope though? Is it necessary?
Does it make things easier? I don't quite get it because the book doesn't
explain too much about what multicast does instead of just teaching me how
to create a multicast scope under the DHCP snap in.
Thanks

OT: Lights out!
So, we're sitting here minding our own business, and everything just shuts
down. Lights (my office has no windows!), computers, everything. And
apparently, the building has no generator. Was out for under 5
minutes....but after being on the phone with the electric company (wasn't me
on the phone), we're under the impression that it could be this sunspot
nonsense that's supposed to hit Earth today. I was under the impression that
this was only going to affect extreme northern and southern latitudes. I'm
in Boston...not too extreme. Anyways, has anyone else noticed anything
strange from this?
OK, had to do something while we were waiting for "clearance" to get back to
work. (I'm dead serious. We can sit in front of our computers and waste time
on the internet, but we can't do any work until we're told to. Not that I'm
complaining...)

W2K3 Help
This is unrelated to exams... Sorry for that...
Please reply to the question within the newsgroup. I
cannot give out my e-mail add. here.
I am looking for people who may be experiencing a
possible 'bug' in W2K3 when used as a member server in an
NT4 domain. This will be a precursor to opening a support
incident with MS if necessary.
Here is the situation...
- We are still in the dark ages of NT4 as our NOS...We
have no active directory controllers of any kind (yet).
- I am a domain admin in the NT4 accounts domain.
- I have a W2K3 system loaded as a member server and its
machine account exists in the NT 4 domain.
- When I log into the local admin account, or any acount
from the machine's local SAM everything works fine.
- When I log into the NT4 domain using my admin account
the system recognizes my credentials as a DA and I can
adminstrate the machine.
* Here's the problem: When I use the menus, any menu
(Start button, drop down from app, etc.) as soon as I
hover over a menu item that has a submenu the menus hang,
explorer.exe consumes 100% of the CPU and the system no
longer responds. It may hang for 10 secs, it may hang
until I force a logoff with ctrl-alt-del, at which time I
get End Task popups from Explorer.exe. It is so bad that
the task manager cannot even track the CPU utilization
while the desktop is hung.
Here is what I have tried...
1) Reloaded W2K3 (cuz I thought it might be a bad patch).
A fresh load of W2K3 has this problem right out of the box
on this system.
2) Moved HDD to a different system with same HW (to
eliminate the possiblility of a HW problem.
3) Reduced the settings for performance so that no bells
and whistles are on for the desktop (no sliding, no
fading, etc.)
4) Reverted to classic views on all folders (interestingly
that helps the start menus to behave but not the
application or context menus.)
5) Installed all hardware/software vendor-specific patches
and upgrades available from 'The New HP'. ;-)
6) Contacted HP T/S for known errata and to verify support
for this hardware platform running W2K3. It is supported
and verified to be operational by HP T/S.
7) Applied all available MS Patches for W2K3.
8) Searched Technet to no avail.
Member servers running Windows 2000 Server do not have
this problem.
Member Workstations with WinXP do not have this problem
(same interfaces and menus as W2K3).
There are no applications running, nor any Antivirus
Utilities loaded.
Hardware specifics:
Running on a Compaq ML370 server. BIOS updated to most
current.
No RAID or anything fancy with the architecture.
Primary HDD is 18GB, split 8/10 to C and D. D is a logical
drive in an extended partition.

Somewhat OT: HTTP Authentication - Digest
Not something an mcse absolutely has to know, but someone complained that
there aren't any useful discussions here:
I had a discussion yesterday with a friend about digest http authentication,
what are your thoughts?
A webserver serving a protected document using the digest method answers
initial client requests with a 401 but includes an authentication challenge.
The server generated 401 includes in the header a nonce, a random value.
This nonce is then encrypted along with the client's user name and password
(as well as some other data) and sent back to the server. The original nonce
is also sent back.
The server will then compare the client generated hash value with it's own
calculated value.
Question: In that calculation, does the server use the nonce sent back by
the client or does it *remember* the nonce value it originally sent? The
point why I ask, that would make it a stateful protocol..
If the server does not remember the original nonce value, then the purpose
of the nonce is simply to enable the client to send a different hash value
with every request, even if the same URL is requested over and over again.
That's a good reason for it to exist, but then why does the server generate
and send it in the first place? The client could just generate the nonce
itself..
If the server does remember, it would enable the server to control the
maximum time the client has to authenticate, among other stuff..
Some of those goals are mentioned in RFC 2617 but to us it was not clear if
those requests are realized in http 1.0.. Tag: Passed 70-216 Tag: 100764
Making Money For Each Other......
I'd been looking for ways to raise money. I found text similar to this posted in another group and thought I'd try it. When I read this I was very skeptical, but desperate-- I invested six $1.00 bills and six 37 cent postage stamps ... and boy am I glad I did!!! I then waited to watch the money come in, prepared to maybe receive about $1,000 to $1,500 in cash or so. But what a welcome surprise when those envelopes kept coming in!!! : So, how much did I get in total return? $1000? $5000? Not even!!! I received a total of $17,542!!! I couldn't believe it!! !! Now after almost six months, I am ready to do it again!!! I can finally pay off my debts! Here is the original post: *****A little while back, I was browsing through newsgroups, just like you are now, and came across an article similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00! So I thought, "Yeah right, this must be a scam", but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you need to send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and address stated in the article. So after thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I thought about trying it. I figured: "what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00, right?" Then I invested the measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!... within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about $20. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over $1,000! In the third week I had over $15,000 and it's still growing.**** --Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it works.... Read this entire message carefully! (PRINT IT OR DOWNLOAD IT) I promise you that if you follow the directions exactly, that you will start making more money than you thought possible by doing something so easy! IMPORTANT: This is not a rip-off; it is not indecent; it is not illegal; and it is virtually no risk - it really works!!!! If all of the following instructions are adhered to, you will receive extraordinary dividends. Here are the 3 easy steps to success: STEP 1:Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the envelope . (Also, it might be a good idea to wrap the $1 bill in dark paper to prevent thievery). Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the phrase "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST.", your name and address, and a $1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for it! Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed legal! Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses: #1) Srikar Simha 1583 Blenheim Road Rockville Centre NY 11570 USA #2) Bill Zonios 8001 Castor Ave. PMB 332 Philadelphia PA 19152 USA #3) Matt Martin 6 Patricia Circle Enfield CT 06082 USA #4)Ceneca Guthridge 751 Rebecca St Lakeland Florida 33805 USA #5)James Woods 2401 Navasota Cir Ft. Worth, TX 76131 USA #6)Matt Garafalo PO Box 58 Elmwood Park NJ 07407 USA
: : REMEMBER TO PUT ENOUGH STAMPS ON YOUR ENVELOPES!!!! STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc...) and add YOUR Name as number 6 on the list. STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups-like this one. (I think there are close to 2.4million groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make! This is perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to Title 18 Sec. 1302 & 1341 of the Postal lottery laws. Keep a copy of these steps for yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use it again, and again. **PLEASE REMEMBER: that this program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully adhering to the directions. Look at it this way. If you are of integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many others have received will come your way. **NOTE: You may want to retain every name and address sent to you, either on a computer or hard copy and keep the notes people send you. This VERIFIES that you are truly providing a service So, as each post is downloaded and the directions carefully followed, six members will be reimbursed for their participation as a List Developer with one dollar each. Your name will move up the list geometrically so that when your name reaches the #1 position you will be receiving thousands of dollars in CASH!!!
**DIRECTIONS ----- FOR HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS------------
Step: 1)You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own posting.Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag your cursor to the bottom of this letter, and select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the computer's memory. .......
2)Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will paste a copy of the letter into notepad so that you can add your name to the list. ........
3)Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do your postings in different settings, you'll always have this file to go back to. .......
4)Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for various newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.) .......
5)Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post message button. You're done with your first one!
Congratulations..THAT'S IT! All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup! **REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That's it! You will begin receiving money from around the world within days! You may eventually want to rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail you will receive. If you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as the postman will deliver it. **JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.** **Now the WHY part: Out of 200 postings, say I receive only 5 replies (a very low example). So then I made $5.00 with my name at #6 on the letter. Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the MINIMUM 200 postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to each of the original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each make 200 MINIMUM posts with my name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I will bring in an additional $125! Now, those 125 persons turn around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5 replies each, I will make an additional $626! OK, now here is the fun part, each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with my name at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me $3,125!!!Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still ONLY 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I will receive $15,625! With an original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00 to names on the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start posting again. ** By the way, if you try to deceive people by posting the messages with your name in the list and not sending the CASH to the rest of the people already on the list, you will NOT get as much. i know someone who did this and he only made about $150.00, and that's after seven or eight weeks! Then he sent the 6 $1.00 bills, people added him to their lists, and in 4-5 weeks he had over $5.000. This is the fairest and most honest way I have ever seen to share the wealth of the world without costing anything but our time!!! You also may want to buy mailing and e-mail lists for future CASH. Make sure you print this article out RIGHT NOW! Also, try to keep a list of everyone that sends you CASH and always keep an eye on the newsgroups to make sure everyone is playing fairly. Remember, HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY. You don't need to cheat the basic idea to make the CASH!! **The thing to remember is: do you realize that thousands of people all over the world are joining the internet and reading these articles everyday?, JUST LIKE YOU are now!! So, can you afford $6.00 and see if it really works?? I think so... Remember, play FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will really work. GOOD LUCK!!! Tag: Passed 70-216 Tag: 100750
Windows 98 question.
Hi,
I have a question about windows98. I know many of you may not use this OS
anymore, but some application in my company rely on this OS. I think I had
this problem before but forgot the way to fix it.
The problem is when a win98 user logon to his computer, and he successfully
access the share on another computer within the same workgroup, but after a
certain amount of time (few hours later), he will be denied access to the
share. He has to log off and on again to regain access. I think maybe there
is some patch that I need to apply, so I go ahead to windows update but I
had already updated everything, so I thought it has something to do with the
win98 itself. Does anyone know anything about this problem and know how to
fix it?? Thank you.

I need some advice!
I'm two years out of high school and I've been working for
a loan company doing general IT stuff for the last year
and a half. I don't have any certifications yet but have
a lot of knowledge regarding networking and computers.--My
question is should I go to ITT Tech and take two years
getting their AA in networking, and then pursue
certifications? Or should I just put all my energy into
getting certifications?--
Also if i choose to focus on certifications how should I
go about this? I've called a couple of training places
and for like $2000 i can go to a week long cram session.
Since I'm financing this myself would it be too difficult
to just read the books and go through the exercises on my
own home computer that has 2003 server on it?
Any advice or tips would be very much appreciated.
