Hi, I have decided to take my exams, stating with the XP
Exam, I was going to do the 2k exams, but realise it's not
worth it. Can anyone advise me on a really good paper
back 70-270 book, that will cover what I need?

OT: Welcome Kit
Got my welcome kit last night. It has a nice colorful certificate
(personally signed by Bill Gates), a cool ID card and a lapel
pin. I was so excited that I decided to hit the town to celebrate.
I wore the lapel pin the whole night but not one hot chick
approached me. What am I doing wrong? I thought that
thing was a chick magnet. Should I have also flashed my ID
card more? I don't understand. I think next time I'm going to

Hello all,
I have one technical question that I don't know to solve,
please advise:
Scenario:
We send ICMP echo packets to a targeted computer and to
receive the ICMP echo reply packet if the targeted
computer is online. This can be done by using PING
command. After issuing the PING command, we can issue the
ARP command to check the Ethernet address that has been
cached in our computer, thus establishing the IP address
to Ethernet Address correspondence. But this approach can
only handle single computer. For multiple computers, we
will have to do it one by one and the process will be
slow to scan ALL the computer in the LAN segment near us.
We want a efficient solution for the above scenario, can
you suggest one?
Are there any tools available?

MSCE 2000 to 2003 upgrade path confusion
I passed 70-292 yesterday, I was under the impression that just that
single exam would update my MCSA to 2003 since I am already a
MCSA/MCSE on win 2000. Now I see that I also have to take additional
exams (293 and 294) Is this correct. Will the CCNA or network+ count
towards either of those? I am looking now and 70-296 is all I need
for MCSE, so it doesn't seem worth the study time and expense of two
more exams to get a 2003 MCSA. Anybody more fimilar with the upgrade
process that can clear this up. It looks like all I need is 70-296
for 2003 mcse but want to be sure.

Server 2003 or Space Cadet 2003?
Here's an oddity: Server 2003, set up as a DC in a little test forest with
no other DCs, has lost track of about 30 gigabytes of information contained
in 6 partitions on the second (IDE) hard drive in the system.
Now, 4 of those partitions are clones of partitions on the primary drive,
all of which contain operating systems, and one of which is a clone of the
Server 03 partition.
I just discovered this. It wasn't happening the first couple weeks after
the second drive was installed. 03 saw all of the partitions with their
labels and their drive letters and data in both Explorer and Disk
Management.
In Explorer, the partitions simply don't show up. In disk management,
however, I see all the partitions. The disk is shown to be online (it's
basic) and all the partitions are marked healthy, but they have no labels
and they have no drive letters. All the partitions are, however, shown to
be the correct size and to be formatted with the correct file system. But
none of the programs or data is recognized - all the partitions are shown to
have all the space available. And this includes the partitions that have
only data and no OS on them.
Rescanning the disks had no effect.
I haven't had much chance to look into this yet, except that a quick scan of
the event logs seemed to show that at one time 03 was trying to replicate
Sysvol on the first drive to the Sysvol on the second drive, as if it
thought this were another DC in the domain. That seems as if it might have
something to do with the problem, but I haven't followed up yet. Nor have I
checked DNS configuration,
Has anyone run into this? I have had, and know others who have had,
multiple partitions (clones) of the same server OS set up as DCs under NT
and 2000 and have not come across this kind of problem.
But maybe there's a simpler cause that I'm simply overlooking. What really
seems odd is that it fails to see the data, the labels and the drive letters
on all the partitions on the second drive, not just the one that's a clone
of itself. And, of course, that it is correct about the other info
concerning the partitions.
The other OSs on the computer, 2000, 2000 Server and XP Pro, have no such
problem, even though copies of their SYSVOLs exist on the second drive as
well.
Any ideas?

Passed my last exam...
...and now I'm an MCSE!
Arrived at the test center 15 minutes early - 8:45am and there were about 5
students in the reception area. So I waited my turn. 9am the proctor
apologizes for the delay and continues to get everybody else setup. 9:15 he
tells me he's getting dll errors and he's still waiting to download my exam.
9:30 he tells me they got hit with a virus and haven't successfully given a
Prometric exam since Friday but he's going to try to download my exam again.
THANKS FOR TELLING ME NOW! 9:45 he says it's not working, should he download
again? No, I tell him, I'm going somewhere else. I'm ready for this exam
NOW, I took the morning off work, and I'm finishing my MCSE TODAY! I call
Prometric and have them reschedule me for another test center at 10:15 as I
drive across town yelling at the slow drivers for getting in my way. 12:15
happy me strolls out with my 7th score report - MCSE done!
Thank you all for the help over the last six months. Good luck to those
pursuing this certification. Maybe I'll upgrade mine to 2003 later this

Highest score for 70-290?
I got a 761 for this exam. Passing is 700 (according to what's on the
report). Bars show strong for almost every area tested. Does anyone
know what the highest possible score is? I think it's 1000 and if
that's true, how come I got such a low score (761) with bars in the
strong area?

Trouble with GPO's
I have been asking this question in Windows SBS 2003 newsgroups so far
to no avail, thought maybe someone here could help me.
I have been trying to figure this out. I have Windows Server 2003, and
I cannot get my personalized GPO's to work.
My client PC's are XP Pro, I have added 1 restriction for 1 user, just
to try to make it work. What I did is enforced Prohibit access to control
panel (I figured it would be easy to check). I created a GPO named John
Doe, then I put it last in the list under domainname.local, which happens to
be 7. Upon logging on as John Doe the control panel is still present. I
checked it on a client computer. The users are in the SBSUsers OU, and I
put the GPO link in (MyBusiness/Users).
What I want to do is be able to set restrictions on the users in my
domain.
I went into Group Policy Relusts, and upon generating results on this
Policy, and under Applied GPO's it doesn't even show up, and under Denied
GPO's, it also doesn't show up.
What am I doing wrong?
I can't seem to figure this out and would really appreciate any help you
could give me.

Problems with script
Hi
I am trying to run a script to report the installed software on remote machines. The script runs fine when I run it from my workstation against a remote machine on the same domain
The network consists of several small windows 2000 single domain forests with a single windows 2000 server in each forest, and there are no trust relationships between forests. In order to run the script on the other domains, I have been connecting through Terminal services to the domain controller and running the script from there ( I am logging on with Domain Admin rights)

ISA server & DHCP
Hi
I have an ISA server running in my network. For many=20
reasons, computers are moved frequently (don=B4t ask me why)=20
so IP addresses are moving and/or changing, and IP=20
conflicts appear everyday coz there=B4s somebody trying to=20
join the domain without the right IP number assigned to=20
the PC (maybe HD is down, bad NIC, etc.)
Now I want to know if a DHCP server is a good choice,=20
knowing that ISA server policies are based on IP ranges=20
and sometimes joined with usernames.

Hi all
I'm 1 test away from obtaining my MCSE:Security 2000 & 1 test away from my CCNA
I'm trying to make sure that I have the proper qualifications for a $70K per year job. However, when I look at the current job opennings, the qualifications they list are not all the same. For example: A lot of them require programming. But they don't say which programming is required. I'm worried about spending money I can't afford to learn one type of programming language and then lose a job because they require a different programming language skill. This example holds true for Certifications and other skill sets
Can anyone tell me what skill sets I need to be qualified for this type of high paying job
I'm looking into Network Admin or Network Engineer positions. Anything network related as long as it pays $70K per year. That is the goal

lol did a check to see what needed to be updated in the Windows Update...
came up with the new cumulative security patch for my system... installed...
rebooted... works fine... check again because there were more updates... 2
driver updates... one for my NVidia GeForce 4 MX 440 and another for my POS
ESS Allegro onboard sound card. Did the update... reboots... CRASH!!!
DLL32.EXE corrupted!! oh joy... what fun!!

2. tried to boot into safe mode
3. run cmd
4. sfc /scannow
5. would not run so...

8. have ciggy

10. see corrupted file still existing
11. reset restore point to yesterday

15. check drivers - good
16. check SP 1 - still there
17. check Windows Update - need same patch as earlier

Why does the DHCP IP lease have to have an * expiration * time/date in
win-NT ?
Is it so that the host can be moved to a different location on the network ,

If you had 1000 identical windows host computers , all running identical
topology ( say the same ethernet ) , and a class A isp address assigned to
the network : would there still be a reason to subnet into network segments
( given the server is windows also ) ?
Would performance in terms of excessive broadcasts slow down the network ?
No wonder MCSEs make $ , it is almost overwhealming what must be known .
In contrast , Electronics was simple .

MCSA 2003 or MCSE 2000 first?
I'm a 70-216 exam away from an MCSA 2000. My goal is MCSA 2003 as well as
MCSE 2003. Should the order in which this is done be:
MCSA 2000> MCSA 2003 upgrade> MCSE 2000> MCSE 2003 upgrade
or
MCSA 2000> MCSE 2000> MCSA 2003 upgrade> MCSE 2003 upgrade
My concern is that if I do the MCSA 2003 upgrade right after the MCSA 2000,
it will only cause confusion of trying to separate what functionality is in
2000 or 2003 when I go for the MCSE 2000. Is this a valid concern or is the
order not a big deal?

Well, I guess it's time for me I start preparing for my first MCSE 2003
upgrade exam, the silly 70-292. I been goofing off on this ng with you guys
too much. I refuse to waste department money on a real book. I will be
using MOC #2209AP, the MS web site, selftest software and my test server.
the MCSA 2003 count is @ 4,900. If i hurry - i get my little "special"
card. Yeah!!

3. Now click on 'ATTACHMENTS'. Then click on 'ATTACH FILE'. Find your file
on your Hard Disk (the one you saved from the text editor). Once you find
it, click on it and then click 'OPEN' and 'OK'. You should now see your file
name in the attachments box.
4. Now click on 'SEND'/'POST'. You see? Now you just have 199 to go! (Don't
worry, it's easy and quick once you get used to it.) NOTE: the versions of
Netscape Navigator's are similar to each other, so you'll have no problem to
do this if you don't have Netscape Navigator 3.0.
QUICK TIP!
(For Netscape Navigator 3.x and above) You can post this message to many
newsgroups at a time, by simply selecting a newsgroup near the top of the
screen, hold down the SHIFT, and then select a newsgroup near the bottom of

the link 'Newsgroup Directory'). But I don't think you'll have any problem
posting because it's very easy once you've found the newsgroups. All these
web browsers are similar. It doesn't matter which one you have. (But it
makes it very easy if you have Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later. You may
download it from the Internet if you don't have it.) You just have to
remember the basic steps, stated below.
BASIC STEPS FOR POSTING:

said 5 responses is actually VERY LOW! Average are probable 20 to 30! So
lets put those figures at just 15 responses per person. Here is what you

$759,375.00 at #1 $11,390,625.00 When your name is no longer on the list,
you just take the latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another
$6.00 to names on the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start

of people all over the world are joining the Internet and reading these
articles everyday, JUST LIKE YOU are now! So, can you afford $6.00 and see
if it really works? I think so...People have said, "what if the plan is
played out and no one sends you the money? So what! What are the chances of
that happening when there are tons of new honest users and new honest people
who are joining the Internet and newsgroups everyday and are willing to give
it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day, with

2003 Track Number of Questions and Duration of Exams Adapative / Non Adaptive
Seems like there's no information on just how long the new 2003 exams
are or how many questions there are.
Cramsession doesnt seem to have any information apart from the pass
mark.
Does anyone know whether the exams are adaptive in nature (maybe not
fully hence everyone is saying you can still review and mark)

Deleting a user account in 2003 server
I don't have a "User Account" dialog in 2003 server. How can I completely
remove a user profile from a machine? I can remove the name from the
Administrative tools -> Computer Management -> User/Groups area but the
folders such as My Document for that users and registry settings remain. I
