Hi All,
I have a little problem, I have been advised that the MCDST (Desktop Support
Tech) Exams count towards the MCSE. I have since been advised by a friend in
fact they dont. Can someone pease advise on this as if it does not then its
£600 I have wasted.

They do not.

MSCDT can be used as an Elective for the MCSA only and not carried to the
MCSE

600 quid... wow, that's gotta be an expensive testing centre!

If you have Windows 2000 skills, what you can do, is use MCDST as the
elective for MCSA 2000. Then, you can use the MCSA 2000 as the elective for
MCSE 2003. If you take the MCSA upgrade exam 70-292, you can do the whole
thing in nine exams total.

I'd have to double check, but I'm pretty sure you cannot use the Upgrade and
still use the MCSA (2000) Elective options together. But if I'm wrong thats
a good way to get the best bang for your testing dollar.

I'm not sure if this applies where you are, but I find it best to look on
the Mother Ship for such things:

Well, unless that is specifically excluded somewhere that I can't find, I
believe it is a valid path. Looking at the cert planners, I see nothing
that would preclude it. I used MCDST for both MCSA 2000 and MCSA 2003, and
I used MCSA 2000 for MCSE 2003. However, I did not take 292 (which is the
whole point here), so I took 10 tests. I took 290 and 291 before I took 215
and 218 so the "upgrade" wasn't really available to me.

I think you took some extra exam in your path, which could be skipped

MCSA2k=3core + MCDST as elective
MCSE2k3=5core (core client OS requirement already completed if passing MCSA)
+ MCSA2k as elective

Exam 292 replaces 290+291 => 1 less, and totally 3+5-1=7 exams

Not really sure of the point you are trying to make. MCSE2k3 is 6 core +
elective. 290, 291, 293, 294, client os, design, plus elective. The order
I took was...
272, 271 (MCDST)
270, 290, 291 (MCSA2k3)
293, 294, 297 (remaining MCSE cores)
215, 218 (MCSA2k) and since that fulfilled the MCSE elective (MCSE2k3)
That is 10 tests total.

My prior point was that had I taken 215 and 218 first, I could have taken
292 instead of 290 and 291 and done the whole trip in 9 exams. To chart it
out...

272, 271 (MCDST)
270, 215, 218 (MCSA2k)
292 (MCSA2k3)
293, 294, 297 (MCSE2k3)
That is 9 exams total.

Yes, MCDST gives 2 extra
I missunderstood the path as 10 extra after MCDST...
