    - OT: Programmers Ok I had to follow up on Ken's thread to prove that it is not just Lusers that are crazy. At my last job we had a programmer that I swear was on lithium. This guy was so far out there he would talk about writing code according to the phase of the moon. Another story that I can remember is he had an application which interfaced with a truck scale at the local landfill. It was pretty basic and used to keep the books for fees and weights of disposed material. Well he was convinced on several occasion that people at the landfill were modifying his code and breaking his application. Now it is true that the compiler and source code were on the pc but landfill employees modifying the code LOL! These people hardly found the power button let alone figure out how to escape from the menu system we had for them. We often made bad jokes about this guy bringing a gun to work.     - OT: Lusers Just got a call from our resident ditz, Kathy. *ring ring* "Hello?" "Ken, it's Kathy...is Steve still here?" "No, he left about 5 minutes ago...what do you need?" "Oh, I wanted him to turn off my spell check." "Oh, that's no big deal, I can do that for you, I'll be up in a second." *click* Here, I'm already patting myself on the back for a job well done - I've pleased the end luser, making the IT department, and myself in particular, look pretty damn good. Even if it is a mundane, simple task. But hey, I haven't been feeling so great lately, and anything to make me feel a little better helps, right? So off I go, up to Kathy's desk. I realize halfway there that having Word automatically check spelling and grammar is a good thing...and if that's turned off, she'll never ever run spell check, and there'll be all kinds of sloppy-ass documents being sent out to customers and whatnot. So I rethink my position here, and decide that instead of just doing it, I should ask Kathy why, exactly, she needs auto-spell-check disabled. So I get there, and pose the question to her. The answer I get is, no lie: "Well, I get an error message that says there are too many errors in this document." I'm not sure if I sh!t myself or if I fainted first, but I know that both happened. Look, I explained when I awoke, firstly, Word doesn't care how many spelling errors there are, it will detect as many as it finds. A billion, if you're a bad typer. So that's not the error message. Secondly, if there are that many spelling errors, why on earth would you want to disable it? Surely you're not planning on proofreading the document, manually fixing errors, and proofing again, are you? That's a waste of time. Have the computer proofread it for you, *as you type*. Then give it the once over when you're done. Isn't that a lot easier and less time consuming? Again, the response I get from Kathy floors me: "Well, it's just that the cat is annoying, I don't like him anymore." Right off the bat, I didn't know what the hell she was talking about. All I could think of was Lewis Black and "If it wasn't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college." Anyway, she was talking about the "helpful" Office animations. Like the paper clip guy, the cat, I think there's a wizard or something. So I just turned them off. Good deal. So I get back to my desk, and the phone rings. Guess fukcing who. "It's still underlining my misspelled words." "I know, I didn't disable the spell checker. That's probably not a good idea." "Well, I need it undone." "I'll call you back" *click* *picks up phone again* "Hi, Kristen, it's Ken." "Hi Ken, what can I do ya for?" "Kathy wants spell check disabled in Word. I don't think that's a good idea." "Say no more, I'll deal with her." *click* Now that a "higher up" has told her that it's probably not smart, she's dealing with it. Crazy woman thinks she can outsmart me. I'll just go to her boss. Look, I might not be the greatest IT guy around, but I got some fricking common sense. She's a whack job, I'll tell ya.     - MCSE training kit for 70-215 Practice Session problem!! I'm quite new to W2K and am working thru the MS Training book for exam 70-215. I have the evaluation version of W2K Server installed as per the previous practice sessions of the book and my hardware and specs all meet the requirements for the sessions. I'm stuck on Chapter 3 page 114 during the file copy phase of the Setup Manager Wizard where you create a distribution folder for an unattended setup. At the point where you tell it to copy the dist files from the CD to your newly created Win2000dist folder, the error "Setup Manager cannot determine free space available on \\Server01\Win2000dist\. Error#1231. The network location cannot be reached." When I OK this message a further message appears "There is not enough space available on the \\Server01 \Win2000dist drive to holdthe setup files. 312MB are needed and 0MB are available." I have double checked my initial setup of the evaluation version of W2K Server as per the training book, and also appear to have plenty of spare disk space available in C: so I'm at a loss as to why this is happening. Can anyone help me out please, any thoughts would be much appreciated as I'm keen to get thru this book and take the exam. 70-210 presented no problems when I worked thru it but I am really a 'beginner' still so it may be something simple or obvious!     - RIS & Laptops? Whats microsofts official line on RIS support for laptops? In everything I've read, including all the mcse study guides, its always says it needs to be a pxe compliant PCI NIC, and it won't work with laptops! "RIS Clients Must Have Particular PCI Network Cards, Laptops Need Not Apply As it only supports PCI cards, laptops which in general use PC Card or Cardbus network cards can't be helped by RIS" http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000pro/deploy/depopt/ris.mspx Has this now changed? We've just got in a load of new HP nx4000 and they do pxe boot, and I'm currently installing win2k on them all! Is this because the network card is built in, and is so considered a PCI NIC?     - .msi installer I have been trying to write a batch file for my network to install MS updates in "quiet" and "passive" mode. I've been able to get the hotfixes to work, but am having trouble with the .msi installers (msxml.msi for XML 4 to be exact). I have been on MS' website and found the command switches, but the syntax for .msi keeps coming back "specified file not found". Can someone help? What am I missing? I am using WXP Pro.
