70-291 test center shenanigans
I'm so angry right now about stupid MCSE certifications...
I've been working toward getting and MCSE 2003 certification for the last couple of months and I'm so damn tired. I'm learning how to do things 'the microsoft way' just so that I can get a certification and improve my chances of landing a good job. It's been going OK until yesterdays experience at Unitek Information Systems in Fremont, CA. I had chosen the Unitek site as my testing center because they gave Pearson VUE tests, an VUE has a deal right now that if you take a certification test and fail it, they will let you retest for free.
Here the deal. I was taking the 70-291, "Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure Implementation, Management, and Maintainance" test for the second time. I had failed the test with a 693/700 a week prior and I'd spend the week preparing and practacing and I felt pretty confident. I don't understan how they grade these tests and everyone who asks is told that it is a Microsoft secret. Sheesh. But I digress.
I showed up at this Pearson VUE testing center and the staff was pretty confused. Aparently the are a 'career training' center and are not used to people just studying at home and taking the tests instead of giving them thousands of dollars for training. After they finally figure it out they take me to testing room with about twelve stations and nobody else taking tests besides me and they sit me in front of a computer. Except that it doesn't work. After trying all the workstations the test 'proctor' gets one of the tech support guys to jump start one of the computers and I am left in the room by myself to take the test.
As I click through the initial screen with the NDA and test rules I notice that one of the screens mentions something about beta questions. I didn't give it much thought at the time but I did notice that it said that ungraded questions would be inserted randomly with the regular questions. I proceeded to take the test and since I am given a whole notepad instead of a dry 6 inch by 6 inch dry erase board that I'd been given at the Prometric testing center where I had taken the previous tests, I made sure that I made little notes for myself on each quesion, in case I had to go back and recheck my answers. I was also using it to keep pace since I had not had not found the question number in the right top portion of the screen like my previous exams. And so I went along merrily on my way and then I noticed that I was on question 30 of the 35 that I expected and I had not yet seen any questions about DNS, unlike my first time. I continued answering the questions until I got to question 35. As soon as I clicked the button to confirm my last answers I leaned back after a long grueling ordeal.... Exept that I was presented with another question. At that point I thought that maybe I had miscounted the questions and so I answerd question number 36. And then I was presented with another question. When I got to question number 38 I began to realize that it was not my inability to count that was the problem, but that something else was going on. I scanned the screen carefully until I found at the bottem left corner in small type: 38 of 55 questions answerd. Holy shit. 38 of 55 questions and only 20 minutes left to go. I sped through the rest of the exam and wound up taking the last five minutes to randomly choose the answers for the last five of six questions, I barely had enough time to read the answers, let alone the questions and so I was sure that I had missed many of the last questions. When I finally 'completed' the exam I was confronted with a score of 612 out of 700. I got up from the my chair and walked up the hall to the front desk.
When I got to the desk I had to flag somebody down because the lady who was supposed to be my 'proctor' was no where in sight. I told them that I had just completed the test. The lady walked up to the printer and said, "Oh, he failed" to somebody else in the office. She handed me the paper and sent me on my way. I went to my truck and sat ther fuming and just punched the dashboard and grunted and cursed. What the hell had just happend.
As I drove back to my home I had plent of time to think about it. I kept wondering, why did I get 55 questions instead of 35? Why did I get beta questions? Why was I not at least warned that this was going on? Why, after preparing better for this test than any other test, was I done in not by the content of the questions, but by the delivery of the test?
When I got home I jumped on my computer and searched the web for "MCSE beta exam". On the microsoft website I found that beta exams were given free of charge to specific certified professionals so that Microsoft could take tweak their tests. More questions popped into my mind. Why did I get a beta exam anyway? Why did they charge me for it? What the hell just happened to me?
I decided to confront the Microsoft's MCP department and Pearson VUE but I had to wait until the next day because their offices were closed.
The next morning I called 1-800-636-7544, the MCP Program Info line. I told the guy my story and he listened respectfully and talked to his manager a couple of times as I told him my story. He asked me if the questions were appropriate to the test, and wether or not I thought any of the questions were too hard. I answered his question and consulted his manager again. He told me that there was nothing he could do, that they would investigate the incident, but that I was pretty much on my own because the test that I had taken was the right test. He told me that they offer three different tests. A 'standard' test. A 'long' test. And an 'adaptive' test. He told me that the test itself would have anywhere from 30 to 70 questions. That was not what I expected to hear. I asked him if it was standard practive to give regular MCP candidates beta questions and he conceeded that it was not. Armed with the information I decided to confront VUE next.
I called VUE and the guy was pretty attentive and receptive to my situation. That's one thing I can say both the Microsoft guy and the Pearson VUE guy were very good at handing the situation. I've been on the other end of the Customer Support line and I know how hard it can be to handle irate customers. And I was irate. After I expained the situation to the VUE customer support representative, he informed me that he was going to pass the information to his manger for her review. He said that he was going to recommend that I get to take the test again for free. He told me that they were going to pull my test and review it and that I would be called back within a week. Now I wait.
After I hung up I reviewed my exam report. I compared it with my previous exam report and I noticed something else that shocked me. The objectives were different on each report. Both reports had the objectives:
Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining IP Addressing
Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining Name Resolutions
Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining Network Security
Maintaining a Network Infrastructure
The 35 question version had Implementing, Managing, and Maitaning Routing and Remote Access, and the 55 question version had Managing and Maintaining Physical and Logical Devices.
So what was going on? Had the Microsoft objectives changed in the last two weeks. And if so, why did my books not list the 'Managing and Maintaining Physical and Logical Devices' objective and why had Microsoft not updated it website?
Obviously, I had been screwed of my time and my money. If it wasn't for the fact that 50% of the sys admin out there wont even look at your resume without MCSE certification and that I need to find a good job soon, I would give up on this quest for MCSE certs.
And so now I wait patiently, but still angry. I don't expect to hear back from Microsoft but I will keep on Pearson VUE so that the very least they let me take the test again soon. Hopefully they can get it right next time. Tag: Institutional learning. Tag: 138258

Testking & Transcender - Exam Takers Please Read
This has probably been said many times, but people just don't seem to get
the point! And although I've been posting on this NG for only few weeks its
beginning to annoy me seeing people (such as Sathir Puchnabe, Maria Zapatta)
post 'I passed my exam thanks to Testking' or 'I'm taking the exam soon,
does anyone know if Transcender have a paper on it?'!
If you use Testking or Transcender or any other software/study
guides/braindumps that give you the actual test questions and answers then
YOU ARE CHEATING, you are obtaining your qualification illegally, you might
as well use one of those dodgy internet diplomas!
If everyone cheated and took the exams, then we'd have millions of
MCPs/MCSAs & MCSEs wandering around who don't know sh*t. It would mean that
those of us who really studied and took the exam legally would have our
certification degraded to the point where it became pointless. I'm only an
MCP now, but I'm working towards MCSA, then MCSE, and I want to know that in
the end it's going to be worth all the effort!
Secondly if you become an MCSE through cheating, and you don't really know
what your talking about, and then get a job based on that qualification,
then what happens when a real problem arises in your job, and you have no
idea how to sort it? Testking won't be able to help you then will they!? And
you'll look like a real pro in front of your new boss and fellow MCSE team,
won't you!
If you really want that MCP/MCSE qualification WORK for it, study the
literature, work with the OS to gain experiance, above all, remember
TestKing/Transcender is NO help to you, you might think it is when you pass
the exam, but in reality it is just giving you a false qualification, and
you'll fall flat on your face sometime in the future!
And in the end I think its much more satisfying to achive something (whether
its an MCP qualification or anything else in life) knowing you did it
through hard work, and not by cheating!
Lastly, if you are going to cheat, don't post to this newsgroup, or any
other microsoft newgroup for that matter, telling everyone about it!

I have to get into the city tonight to visit my friend in the hospital. For
those of you familiar with Boston, here are my options:
Rt 24 North to Rt 93 North, risking massively backed up traffic (LA-like,
I'm sure), not to mention the all-too-real possibility of not even getting
on 93.
93 North, 7 or 8 miles to Exit 18, to Melnea Cass Blvd. Once off the
highway, I may be alright.
OR
Rt 24 North to Rt 93 South
Rt 93 South to Rt 95 North
95 N 15 miles or so to Rt 9 East, in Newton. Rush Hour on 95 is usually only
slightly more pleasant than 93. However, with 93 closed, it should be 100
times worse. Rt 9 is never a walk in the park either.
Once in Boston proper, I should be alright
All in all, I'm looking at a 35 mile ride tonight, which I'm expecting to
take upwards of 2 hours. Thank you, Democrats. I now hate you just as much
as Republicans. Now I have to vote for Nader? Christ.

Exam 70-290 help please......
If you have passed MCSE exam 70-290 I really need your
help. I've had 3 goes at the exam now (@ $245 AUS per go)
& the best I've got is 695/700. I'm getting so frustrated
with it. I'm reading the self paced PDF training kit by
Dan Holme & Orin Thomas. Can anyone suggest anything else
I should be reading to getme over the line? I've tried
the only transcender & boson I could find which helped a
little but not enough to get me over the line. Any
replies (even with links) would be GREATLY appreciated.

MS Press 70-290 book and Windows Server 2003 EE evaluation copy
microsoft.public.cert.exam.mcse:
I am working my way through [1] and have installed the
included evaluation copy of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise
Edition. I've noticed that group policy security and/or
other settings don't seem to take effect unless I reboot
the machine. I first noticed this when I turned off
password complexity requirements but couldn't create user
accounts with non-complex passwords. I noticed it again
when I did the exercises for Chapter 3, Lesson 4.
Any ideas?

Virtual PC 2004 with Windows 2003?
Has anyone succesfully used Microsoft's Virtual PC 2004 with Windows
2003? I'm about to tear my hair out. I keep getting messages that

Maybe I should use VMware or something? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I tried

and the clock skew in the event log.

Single Dad Can't Format
I was told there was a command that I could run on my head

See look here now I pay the nursery $125 a week to take

New exam fomat question with 70-292 and 296
Hello,
I see some people talking about the "new" exam format for these tests. Is
the new format the type of questions that are included in the exam demo
download from MS. The type of questions would be drag and drop, reorder,
hot area type. I just want to make sure I am not missing anything.

70-229 and SQL file placement
I'm reading Thomas Moore's book for 70-229. It isn't as full of mistakes as
most study guides I have read, but some of what he says, I am just not too
sure about.
I'd like to get some feedback (arguments) going on SQL Server and file
placement. Of course, all this discussion should be based on Microsoft's
perceptions and the exam, which, I would bet money, are way out of step with
state of the art RAID systems in the real world.
Moore says that tables that are mostly constant but read a lot should be on
RAID 5. I think they should be on RAID 1, mirroring. Mirroring allows two
threads to access the disk mechanics simultaneously. RAID 5, on the other
hand, is faster for writing because it can drop off a few bytes on one
drive, then while the mechanics are doing their part, the controller has
already dropped off bytes to the other drives in the stripe. Do you agree?
He says that the log files should be on RAID 1 for reliability because they
are written to often. Well, any RAID except 0 gives data protection in the
event of a disk failure, but RAID 1 requires 2 writes for each single block
of data being saved. His reasoning is that calculating parity on a RAID 5
takes time. I think that calculating parity on a quality hardware RAID
controller will always be faster (a few hundred processor cycles at most)
than any hard drive with moving parts could possibly be. What do you think?
Or more important... what do you think Microsoft thinks?

You don't say how much time per day you are studying.
I recommend to my students that they take the material in
small amounts. My CCNA students have four hours of lab per
week and two hours of lecture per week. I recommend to
them that they take one hour per day 5 days a week to read
the material.
I also recommend to stop ready when you are getting
frustrated with the material and take a short break. You
will never learn anything when you are frustrated or
destracted. I would also recommend reading/studying when
your children are sleeping or busy with activities for a
specific period of time.
As for $50G position. You would have to be very lucky to
get a job like that. I would say you can expect anything

by the abusive attacks on people who are so generously

help to others or those who are simply seeking advice.
I am referring specifically about Sachin Soni and poor Amy.
What must
they think when they are subjected to such a torrent of
abuse? Sachin
was so graciously offering to share his undoubted high level
achievements with others, when he was hounded by you pack
of wolfs. No
doubt Sachin with never return to enlighten us with his
insight into his
certification success, which is a true lose to this
community. Poor Amy
was only enquiring for information about those fine

only crumb of
comfort from this ordeal is that all of you must be real

I really feel for these people, I know what it's like to
