It's a Hollywood conspiracy to deter P2P file sharers.
Imagine how you'd feel if you'd wasted several days downloading the film,

The PATRIOT Act also exacerbates the threat to individual liberty and
privacy and should be of special concern to librarians. Under this
legislation, librarians will be under a "gag order," punishable by law, that
will prevent them from informing library patrons that their records were
turned over to the FBI or are subject to ongoing monitoring.

Freedom to pass through a metal detector and be frisked before entering
public buildings.

Freedom to the above plus identity screening before boarding an airplane.

Freedom to wear seatbelts when I drive because I need sombody to look
after my safety, I can't do it myself.

Freedom to wear a helmet when I ride my bicycle for the same reason.

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary
safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

If someone is checking out books on how to make and conceal bombs or any
other material that you could use to help you kill people more efficiently,
and the FBI decides to investigate them because it seems a little odd. I
wouldn't want the librarian giving that person a warning either. I would
rather the FBI be allowed to follow-up, and hopefully catch this sucker AND
his accomplices if he is indeed, a bad person.

That does not restrict my freedom to check out books.

You asked billyw which freedoms you had lost recently. Whether you
regret the loss or not is irrelevant, they are now a fact in this
country. Personally, however, having to undergo a search of my person
before being permitted to enter City Hall is repugnant to me. It seems a
violation of every aspect of the freedoms our forefathers fought for.

The exclusivity or not of the laws, again, is irrelevant. This country
was founded upon the principle of self-determination. That includes the
right to auto-Darwinate. Shall we proclaim mountain climbing illegal
next? Even with the libraries full of safety regulations in effect,
people continue to die by the thousands annually in automobile
accidents. It seems logical that the government should outlaw these
fiendish instruments of mass destruction. In 2000,[1]there were 3,482
unintentional drownings in the United States, an average of nine people
per day. This does not include those who drowned in boating-related
incidents. Should steps be taken to protect our citizens from that
deadly liquid H2O?

I was being screened at the airport already. I am still free to fly and I

checks, what is your recommendation for protecting the public? It sounds

Seatbelt and helmet laws came into effect long before the Patriot Act so I
am not sure that I understand how they tie in to the topic. And I already
said I agree with you on those types of laws.

That law was put into place last century. It's one of those laws that no
one pays any attention to and they forget about it. We have thousands of
those laws in this country. It would be one of the first things I would

No, it's not. There are ways to 'protect the public' without unwarranted
searches. A great start would be to join the seperate fiefdoms of the
NSA, CIA, FBI, and the rest of the alphabet soup of government agencies
into one entity, and eliminate the breakdown of communications that the
Homeland Security Dept was supposed to address. I could go on, but it's
not germaine to this discussion. The point was that we have given away
many of our freedoms over the course of the last generation, and the
idea that continuing to do so as a matter of protecting the public sould
not ever be _okay_ with any American. The opposite has occurred since
9/11 with more Americans than ever willing, like you to forego the right
of protection from unwarranted search and seizure. If we can't enter a
public building without agreeing to this violation of our rights, then
we obviously 'Have Something To Hide', right? The whole excercise at
airports is a case of the barn door being closed after the horse has
long left the area, anyway. It exists solely to prove that our
politicians, etc. have 'Done Something'? Yes, you had screening at
airports before, but not like now. You wanna know something else? You
could still get a sharp and pointy object on a plane if you really
wanted to. No box-cutters? Have you seen the new line of ceramic knives,
sir? Want to bring down an airliner? Has m'sieu been shown this lovely
little Cessna 150? Flying it into the landing path of a 747 ought to be
efficatious. And impossible to prevent, I daresay. Load the backseat
with Semtex for bonus points.

Correct, these laws were in effect before the so-called Patriot Act.
They do not tie into the discussion other than as an example of the
intrusiveness of government legislation. Mea culpa.

They are trying. But I wouldn't blame the goverment for being the
goverment. Having worked for the goverment, I can tell you with great
certainty that getting anything done within the goverment is no easy task.

>The point was that we have given away many of our freedoms over the course
of the last generation

I agree with the things you have pointed out in regards to personally
resposibility. You shouldn't have to regulate something that should be
common sense.

> 9/11 with more Americans than ever willing, like you to forego the right
> of protection from unwarranted search and seizure

Before you go throwing around your incorrect assumptions about me, let me be
clear: I do not support unwarrented search and seizure and goverment freely
intruding into my life without cause.

As I have stated before, when I went through the Patriot Act, it says
nothing about you giving up those rights. It amends other laws but nowhere
does it state the that goverment can freely intrude without just cause. It
still says that they have to go through a judge.

> If we can't enter a public building without agreeing to this violation of
our rights, then
> we obviously 'Have Something To Hide', right?

So you are saying that people should be able to freely come and go in public
buildings? What about the White House, would you have any security there?

> The whole excercise at airports..

So you would get rid of airport security? Or you would just put it back to
where it was?

Let me clarify myself. What I mean is, the law is still in place because no
one bothers with the effort to get rid of it. It has no value anymore but
no one is taking up the charge to remove it.

Naw, the whole point to watching the 'roundy pounders' is seeing the old
boys trade paint. 'Pedal to the metal & turn left' gets real fun at 190+
MPH with 500 cu in unmuffled engines thundering by.

That being said, I loved watching FI and CART, too, but they all seem
kind of, erm...civilized, compared to NASCAR.

If it's dry, you ain't cooking it right. Besides, that is the single
greatest thing about deep frying one. You never believe how juicy a turkey
can be 'till you deep fry one!
