second chance program
On April 27, 2004 VUE released a promotion that allows
candidates who fail specific exams with a one time
opportunity to re-take the exam for free.
Eligible Exams: 70-270, 70-290, 70-291, 70-292, 70-293,
70-294, 70-296, 70-297, 70-298
Eligibility period: Customers must take and fail an
eligible exam between April 1 and June 30
Redemption period: Customers may get one free retake by
July 31.
Redemption instructions: Customers must call Pearson VUE
central registration at 1-800-TEST-REG (837-8734) to
schedule their free retake. The call center
representative will validate eligibility. The customer
should identify they are taking part in the "Second Shot"
campaign.
Other restrictions:
Offer good in US only. (All eligible and redeemed exams
must be taken within the US.)
Customers are entitled to retake any ONE exam that they
failed during the eligibility period. They may receive
only one free retake, regardless of how many attempts or
different exams they attempt. The free retake cannot be
applied to an exam the customer did not take (and fail)
during the eligibility period.
Free retake cannot be applied to prior purchases (i.e.,
customers cannot get a refund if they've already paid for
a retake and have taken it already). If they failed that
paid retake, they may be still entitled to a free retake.
All retake time frames are subject to compliance with
Program Retake rules
(http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcpexams/faq/security.a
sp), which state:
If you do not pass an exam the first time, you may retake
it at any time. If you do not achieve a passing score a
second time, you must wait at least 14 days to retake the
exam a third time. A 14-day waiting period will be
imposed for all subsequent exam retakes. If you have
passed an exam, you cannot take it again. Beta exams may
be taken only once.
This offer is available only at Pearson VUE testing
sites. Customers must take and fail an exam at a Pearson
VUE site during the eligibility period. They may then
retake that same exam at no additional cost during the
redemption period at a Pearson VUE testing site (either
the same testing site, or any other Pearson VUE testing
site within the US). Tag: Help with Internet Explorer Tag: 125380
Newbie
Hey guys,
I am a certification newbie and just had some basic
questions.
1. When your certification expires after 3 years, do you
have to retake all the tests again, or is there some kind
of continuing education?
2. My career objectives are to work in network security
and administration. Are their other certifications that
would be good to get in addition to the MCSE?
Just so you know a bit about my background, I am a
graduate assistant pursuing an MBA and MS in computer info
systems.
Thanks in advance!

Texas D.A. Won't Prosecute Alleged Braindumper
Judge orders assets returned; Microsoft considering civil charges.
4/22/2004 -- The longest-standing criminal investigation of an alleged
braindumper has come to an end without any charges being filed.
Almost two years ago, San Antonio police seized the business and personal
assets of former TestKiller.com and TroyTec.com owner Garry Neale during a
criminal investigation of a complaint made by Microsoft alleging that he
sold Microsoft certification exam questions, in violation of Texas theft of
trade secret statutes.
Now, Neale's assets -- including $408,566.84 from various bank accounts
along with business assets and personal items such as a truck,
collectibles, children's video games and a refrigerator -- have all been
returned to him by court order. The Bexar County District Attorney's Office
has also publicly declared that it no longer intends to criminally
prosecute Neale.

Updating my MCSE status........
Hey guys,
I got my MCSE back in 1997 before I came to the U.S. to
continue my study.
I have a couple questions to ask, which are:
1. how long is the expriration time for a MCSE?
2. Do I have to retake all the tests that I have taken in
order to be certified again?
3. Is there any way to check my status online? I have the
MCP ID.

short shelf life?
Two quotes from the commentary to one of the links I posted:
"If an IT person hasn't been able to find work for a year or two, they
probably won't get hired at all, even if they have 10 years of experience
before being unemployed."
and
"Companies that are hiring IT workers aren't interested in people who have
no experience, or who haven't worked in a while. IT people have a very
short shelf-life, in the eyes of the HR people."
Would you agree or disagree with these statements?

OT: two more on outsourcing
Two blog opinions on Indian outsourcing, with accompanying lively
commentary.
The first is from a technical layman, writing in the left-leaning
"Washington Monthly:"
http://tinyurl.com/2otmo
The above was in response to one from Dan Drezner, globalism cheerleader:
http://tinyurl.com/2t7kb
The latter is interesting because it seems at first to take the contrarian
view that the loss of productivity from going to India largely or wholly
offsets the financial advantage. In the end, it seems to stick, weirdly,
to the outsourcing script in that it suggests that there will be more
demand for high-skilled software design and architecture position here. Or
something.

The Step After MCSE
I'm looking at trying to move from a technical position to management. I was hoping there are a few of you out there in this group who might be able to give me some pointers as to how to approach the situation and also what kind of experience and abilities are key to a technical manager
Ideally, I would like to get into helpdesk or customer service management. My background is six years of helpdesk for a major software company, plus six years of general IT with network admin work and other MCSE related stuff. My only "supervisory" experience so far has been acting on behalf of the helpdesk manager when he was away and supervising the activities of contractors and co-ops. If education is still considered at this point, I have a bachelor's in business administration with management science
I'll have to look outside my current company. There is no chance of getting a management postition in the compnay I am currently with as IT is strictly a two-person operation
So, any advice as to how to land an entry level management job
Thanks Tag: Help with Internet Explorer Tag: 124895

70-297
I have a few thoughts/questions about this exam, and if they been addressed
ad nauseum in previous posts, my apologies to all those who will bite my
head off in their replies:
Is it a better strategy taking any earlier design exams instead of this one,
as Microsoft states you can in order to fulfill MCSE 2003? Is 70-297 really
that much more difficult than, say, 70-219 or 70-220?
I'm aware this exam is as much about time management than anything else, but
I read something in another newgroup that you're alloted only 20 minutes per
scenario, after which you move to the next scenario and the clock is reset?
True?
Thanks for the input.

I just failed my first exam today (after passing five in a

got right... I've heard that the maximum score you can get
