My situation currently (and this is long...):
I have been in Helpdesk/Customer Support for about 6 years now and at a =

I was also wondering if there is an in between that would be good for my =

I have have heard that those IRanians (living in Iran) who would like to

Universal Group membership caching
Hi,
I am learning windows 2003 and have a question about Universal group
membership caching.
Ok Global catalogs are stored on domain controllers, so for redundancy in a
site you could place it on 2 DC's.
Universal group membership caching is enabled for the site, so where is it
stored? Can you set it up for site redundancy? Like the same idea as 2 DC's
for global catalogs in 1 site? Tag: Getting ready to take 70-218, what can I expect? Tag: 101678
Samba 3 runs rings around Windows Server 2003 in file serving performance

Samba beats Windows
By Roger Howorth [13-10-2003]
Samba 3 runs rings around Windows Server 2003 in file serving performance
Tests by IT Week Labs show the latest version of the open-source Samba file
and print server software is 2.5 times faster than Windows Server 2003 in
the same role.
The news comes as many firms are grappling with the consequences of
Microsoft ending support for NT4, coupled with uncertainty about when
Microsoft will next update Windows. The performance difference between
Windows Server 2003 and Samba 3 has increased dramatically compared with
Samba 2 and Windows 2000 Server.
Samba provides file and print services to Windows PCs. It enables a Linux or
Unix server to work as a file server for client PCs running Windows
software. The new version also introduces support for Microsoft's Active
Directory for allocating and controlling user access rights.
Samba 3's scalability is as impressive as its performance. While Windows
performance scales up well initially, it then drops off quickly as more
clients access the server. In contrast, Samba 3 offered excellent throughput
up to the limit of our test, conducted on a low-spec Intel server.
Consequently, firms could save money on licence fees, and on hardware, by
using Samba instead of Windows servers. IT consultant Alan Munday, who
recommends Samba to his clients, said the resulting saving was a key
consideration for firms.
Munday is already using version 3 at some smaller sites. However, he was
dismissive of Active Directory. "I'm not [interested in the new Active
Directory features] because the primary focus for my smaller clients is to
migrate away from their ageing NT servers." Tag: Getting ready to take 70-218, what can I expect? Tag: 101637
Samba 3 extends lead over Win 2003....newbie or wannabe mcse's - get a clue!
By Roger Howorth [14-10-2003]
The latest Samba release shows Windows a clean pair of heels in file and
print peformance
Tests by IT Week Labs indicate that the latest version of the open-source
Samba file and print server software has widened the performance gap
separating it from the commercial Windows alternative.
Samba is an open-source implementation of the Common Internet File System
(CIFS) protocol used for file and print sharing by PCs running Microsoft
Windows. Samba 3, released last month, is a long-awaited upgrade that adds
important new features, most notably compatibility with Microsoft Active
Directory. Version 3 can be set up to authenticate users from an existing
Active Directory.
The latest benchmark results show an improvement over version 2, which
performed twice as fast as Windows 2000 Server when it was tested by IT Week
Labs last year. Overall, it now performs 2.5 times faster than Windows
Server 2003.
In terms of scalability, the gains of upgrading to Samba 3 are even more
striking. Last year we found that Samba could handle four times as many
clients as Windows 2000 before performance began to drop off. This year we
would need to upgrade our test network in order to identify the point where
Samba performance begins to fall in earnest.
IT managers say Samba's better performance means they can use cheaper
servers than would be possible with Windows software. And if they run Samba
in a completely open-source environment, such as on Linux, they could remove
the cost of Windows server licences. Samba is available free of charge for
commercial Unix versions including IBM AIX, HP-UX and Solaris. It is also
available for various versions of Linux, Novell NetWare and VMS.
The IT Week Labs tests used Ziff-Davis NetBench file server benchmark with
48 client systems. We selected a low-specification but otherwise modern
server for our tests. We used an HP ProLiant BL10 eClass Server fitted with
a 900MHz Pentium III chip, a single 40GB ATA hard disk and 512MB of RAM. We
did not tune any of the software to improve performance.
Each NetBench client makes a constant stream of file requests to the server
under test, whereas in real-world environments many users would remain idle
for long periods. Consequently our test environment simulates the workload
of some 500 client PCs in a typical production environment. Tag: Getting ready to take 70-218, what can I expect? Tag: 101634

question regarding 70-216
After having been dorment for 18 months, I have finally found the motivation
to finish the MCSE 2000 certification, as I have set my eyes to upgrading to
2003.
So, here's a question regarding the exams that I am yet to do.
I have done 70-210 and 70-215 which I found were a breeze. 70-217 I found
not much harder. I am currently 70-216, which sounds like a very hard exam
to pass. Those of you who have sat 70-216 recently: how hard is it? I am no
newby, but an MCSE + I with a solid 5 years experience as network admin, and
have worked with Active Directory and Windows 2000 for a year now.
I have been contemplaiting doing 70-219 to finish off my MCSE qualification.
How does that rate?
Your input would be very much appreciated. Many thanks.

OT Dell Certs
Lets see if anyone here can read English and answer a simple question.
Has anyone done the Dell certs? My boss is pestering me to do them because
he hates dealing with them for support but to be honest I don't see the
point.
To shut the moron up I am willing to do them but don't want to invest too
much time in a worthless vendor specific cert.
So to recap has anyone done them, how difficult are they, and are they worth
it? Tag: Getting ready to take 70-218, what can I expect? Tag: 101549
moving and copying encrypted files
I find this a bit confusing when I play with it.
I know that when a file goes to FAT volume it loses encryption.
When something is put into encrypted folder it gets/stays encrypted.
I remember seeing somewhere an exception for moving a file within the same
volume.
The resource kit says that if you drag and drop encryption is not automatic
(unencrypted file going into encrypted folder) -- when I do it seems to
encrypt (sp3 applied).
is there a good and simple reference on this? Tag: Getting ready to take 70-218, what can I expect? Tag: 101513

should I just jump into learning programming languages and get certified in

OT: My local ISP Tech support - incompetence at it's very best
I had an issue saturday night... 0x800CCC0E error... no big deal. Tried to
call Tech Support to find out estimated time of repair. Got send to voice
mail... got "Mailbox is full". Email came back up. Sent complaint to tech
support. I had posted the appropriate MS KB Article 191687 for reference
purposes... article states the following error:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'your_account',
Server:'your_SMTP_server', Protocol:SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): NO, Socket
error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800ccc0e Similarly, when you start the e-mail
client or try to receive a message from your Post Office Protocol version 3
(POP3) server, you may receive the following error:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'your_account',
Server:'your_POP3_server', Protocol:POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): NO, Socket
error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800ccc0e
The "tech" wrote back with the following reply:
The error message that you sent in states that you have the server names for
the email account "your_account" entered as "your_POP3_server" and
"your_SMTP_server". These should be..... (correct settings)
The funny part is (and I will explain it to those of you who do NOT see the
obvious problem) that my settings were correct and I was NOT using the error
message I receive in my mail client but the verbatim came from MS Web Site
and this tech could not see this even though I stated that I had a problem
"which is described as follows by Microsoft:..."
I doubt I will be applying for a job with these guys anytime soon if this is
the standard they live up to. ATTENTION TO DETAIL folks.
Stupid thing was, I just wanted to find out how long... when it came back up
I wanted them to know I was dissatisfied with being told the mailbox was
FULL!! He did not address my concerns at all!!
Braindumper perhaps???? I'm suspecting so... incompetent at the very least.

finishing up the study materials for design exam 70-219 (NO, NOT
braindumps).....I was wondering about these "testlets". Is the whole
exam nothing but testlets, or are there "regular" exam questions
mixed in with testlets that may only encompass several questions
within each testlet?

219 Failed :o(
Failed this exam earlier after passing all 6 others previously!
Absolutely gutted!
My last exam 221... Designing Network Infrastructure gave me a pass mark and my
score, this one didn't.
Also this exam was structured differently. I didn't get the survey at the
start but more importantly it completely threw me when after the first case
study it looked like it was ending the whole exam! The last one just went onto
the next case study and let me go back if I remembered something.
I also heard that Balwin Museum is a killer if you get it, yep I got it for my
fisrt case study and it completely buggered me up! It IS a killer! Probably
what I failed on... apart from an obvious lack of knowledge!
Does anyone know if it is possible to contact Microsoft or VUE to get the score
or weak knowledge areas to help me study for the next attempt?
Many thanks
