Semi-OT: Lusers
So, I just got a phone call from the AR manager. We got a new printer, and
it's been giving us all sorts of trouble. To set up a mailbox as default
behavior for the printer, the logged-in user must have administrative
priveleges on whatever machine they're logged into. This, my friends, is not
ideal. But, whatever, I didn't buy the stuff, I'm only working with what
I've got. So anyway, I get a call from her. We'll call her, oh "Kristen"
(because I swear, that's *not* her name....). Kristen wants to be set up
with a mailbox, so when she prints, the printer doesn't spit out whatever
mumbo-jumbo she's trying to print today. So I tell her to leave her computer
on instead of turning it off tonight, and I'll do it before I go home. No
big deal. No sooner had I hung up with her than the phone rings again. Yeah,
Kristen again.
"Ken, do you need my password to set up my mailbox?"
"Yeah, I do, but I have a list here. Don't worry about it."
"Oh, alright then. But if you need it, it's on a sticky pad under my
keyboard."
*Chuckle*
"Is that funny? Am I not supposed to do that?"
"Well, no, not really. I mean, it's not that big a problem here, but whereas
you're the manager, you must have sensitive information on your computer,
right? And you probably don't want too many people getting their paws all
over it."
"Well, yeah, I gue-"
"I suggest you memorize your password, instead of looking at it every
morning when you log in. That way, no one can break into your computer."
"Oh, I know my password, I have it memorized. I just keep it under my
keyboard so Janet can use my computer if I'm not here!"
*Chuckles again* "Kristen, Janet can use her username and password when she
logs in to your computer, ya know. The usernames and passwords aren't
specific to each computer."
"Wait, are you saying that everyone has the same username and password? That
doesn't make much sense, and it doesn't seem very secure."
"No. I'm saying that everyone has a unique username and password, but every
user *could*, theoretically, log in at someone else's computer. For
situations like you and Janet."
"Oh. So, when can you set up my mailbox?"
"I...just.....here, tell me what time you're leaving this afternoon and I'll
set it up when you're done for the day."
"OK, I'm leaving in 5 minutes, have a good night!"
*sigh* "You too, Kristen."
Ugh.

70-290 Syngress Practice Question
From the Syngress Web Site's practice test:
------------------------------------------------------------
Jane is a member of the Marketing group and the Marketing Management group.
The Marketing Management group has Full Control permissions on the MktgMgmt
folder, and the Everyone group has the Deny Read permission set on the
folder. What are Jane's effective permissions on the folder?
A. None.
B. Write, List Folder Contents, Read & Execute, Modify
C. Read, Write, List Folder Contents
D. Write, Modify
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
My answer: D
My Logic: If you've been denied Read, you certainly can't Read&Execute or
List Files.
Book's Answer: B
Book's Logic: Because the Marketing group has been denied Read permisson on
the folder, Jane has all permissions except Read in the folder.

70-219 BIND Question?
Can you guys help me out.... I've been revising for 70-219
using the Exam Cram 2 book from Que. The book states that
Bind 8.1.2 is required for Srv and dynamic update support.
A friend let me borrow his cbtnugget 70-219 video.. which
tells me that the version of bind to support srv and
dynamic updates is 8.2.1
Who was right... I did a google search for bind srv
dynamic update the first page to come back is
www.microsoft.com/technet/
community/columns/profwin/pw1200.mspx
Which states 8.2.1
A KB article on MS web site states 8.1.2
Anyone have a clue who is right.... I'm about 90% sure is
gonna be 8.1.2... Id like to be 100% before I sit the exam!

OT: Nosferatu is hiring
Paint me thoroughly flabbergasted, but my former
employer/nemesis/antichrist is hiring for technical positions _in this
country_.
Openings are for an "IT project leader," which is that to which the U.S.
programmers got reclassified when the coding work got sent to
Cheapistan, and "senior technical support," which tells me the one
support person of any value (whose value was mainly his ability to lie
with impunity and finesse to customers about the scope and impact of
crises) quit or got fired.
Neither opening is posted with any online service. I only found out
about them because my well-meaning parents provide me with the weekly
classifieds from the local Sunday paper. The jobs aren't even listed
with the paper's own site. I don't know what kind of candidates they
hope to get with a listing like this. Since this has to be a conscious
choice, I can't begin to imagine what gambit Nosferatu has planned.
All the remaining project managers got laid off on December 31st of last
year, as part of N.'s plan to directly (micro)manage the software
development process. To hire someone for on-site is a serious
retrenchment. Support was supposed to be sent to the group in the
Philippines, about which I've said little to this point.
A note on the Filipino support abortion:
Some companies sent support overseas out of cheapness, others have a
more legitimate idea of trying to provide round-the-clock support
without a night shift by forwarding calls to a locale where it's
currently daylight. N. was obviously motivated by the former, but was
turning the latter on its head. Despite the company's service being
available 24 hours, it received 99% of its use 8:00AM - 8:00PM ET.
There was really no need for after-hours support. In a move that made
sense only to N., he got the idea to forward support calls (using VoIP
over a path that was 128kbps, and shared with the data traffic, on the
Philippine end, if you can believe that one) to the "office" in Manila.
Thing is, Manila is 13 hours (if I recall correctly) ahead of the
eastern U.S., so the Filipinos would be answering support calls during
what amounted to a night shift. Given the truly byzantine and soul-
crushing nature of the support required, I guess having support techs
half-zonked-out, or else reduced to quivering catatonia by caffeine
overdoses, added an extra frisson to support calls.

Outsourcing gone mad!
With Catholic clergy in short supply in the US, Indian priests are picking
up some of their work, saying Mass for special intentions, in a sacred if
unusual version of outsourcing. American, as well as Canadian and European,
churches, are sending Mass intentions, and requests for services like those
to remember deceased relatives and thanksgiving prayers, to clergy in India.
The requests are mostly routed to Kerala's churches through the Vatican, the
bishops or through religious bodies. Rarely, prayer requests come directly
to individual priests.
While most requests are made via mail or through travelling clergymen, a
significant number arrive via email, a sign that technology is expediting
this practice.
In Kerala's churches, memorial and thanksgiving prayers conducted for local
residents are said for a donation of 40 rupees ($1.30), whereas a prayer
request from the US typically comes with $US5 ($7.25), the Indian priests
say.

Comment on TestKing et al
Every time I take an exam I keep thinking of how in the hell do the likes of
Test King et al come up with the exact test questions for a particular exam.
I took a test on Saturday and once I knew I was going to pass, I tried to
memorize just one question to see if I could do it. Once I passed and left
the testing center, I tried to recreate the question and I could recreate it
in general terms but nothing close to verbatim. I am sure there are those
out there that can memorize questions but I have to think that there must be
testing sites that are on the payroll of TestKing and allowing lamers to

Some of you test takers are idiots ! ! !
Some of the best test takers are the worst employees.
Passing the tests does not mean your a great network admin or computer

I've been a PC/Network Technictian for 8 years, and I can't pass any
of the tests.
And probably never will be able to.
The company and companies I work for do not use Win2000 and WinXP
operating systems the way the test books do.
In my 8 years I have probably not seen 5% of what is in the test
books.
The roll-playing situations that the test books show are not in the
real world.
And you will probably never come across any of those situations.
I must say I am A+ Certified, but that's a different situation then

Dual Booting 2000 and 2003
What's the best way to dual boot Windows 2000 Pro and Windows 2003 Server? I
want the 2000 to be (semi-) permanent, but the 2003 server is temporary
because it's a eval copy that blows up eventually, and because I want it to
study with and I suspect I'll kill it in my own little way. I want 2003 on a
different partition that I can re-format/re-install. Is there anything I
need to be aware of? If I were to re-format the 2003 partition, do I need
to modify anything (boot.ini, for example) in order for 2000 to load
properly? Does it matter which OS gets installed first? Is it too late on a
Friday for these questions?
And what are the requirements for MCSE anyway?
(sorry, I figure certain regulars are pulling their hair out and I wanted to
finish them off...).

father-daughter talk
Father-Daughter Talk
A young woman was about to finish her first year of college.
Like so many others her age she considered herself to be a
very liberal Democrat and was for distribution of all wealth.
She felt deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch
Republican which she expressed openly. One day she was
challenging her father on his beliefs and his opposition to higher
taxes on the rich & the addition of more government welfare
programs. Based on the lectures that she had participated in
and the occasional chat with a professor she felt that for years
her father had obviously harbored an evil, even selfish desire to
keep what he thought should be his.
The self professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had
to be the truth and she indicated so to her father.
He stopped her and asked her point blank, how she was doing in
school. She answered rather ha! ughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA,
and let him know that it was tough to maintain. That she studied
all the time, never had time to go out and party like other people
she knew.
She didn't even have time for a boyfriend and didn't really have
many college friends because of spending all her time studying.
That she was taking a more difficult curriculum.
Her father listened and then asked, "How is your good friend Mary
doing."
She replied, "Mary is barely getting by." She continued, "She barely
has a 2.0 GPA," adding, "and all she takes are easy classes and she
never studies." "But Mary is so very popular on campus, college for
her is a blast, she goes to all the parties all the time and very often
doesn't even show up for classes because she is too hung over."
Her father then asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's
office and ask him to deduct ! a 1.0 off your 4.0 GPA and give it to
your friend who only has a 2. 0." He continued, "That way you will
both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal
distribution of GPA."
The daughter visibly shocked by her father's suggestion angrily fired
back, "That wouldn't be fair! I worked really hard for mine, I did
without and Mary has done little or nothing, she played while I worked
real hard!"
The father slowly smiled, winked and said, "Welcome to the Republican
Party." Tag: OT Friday Fun Tag: 129842
