I am preping for my exams, and I have installed 2003 server on a laptop. I
seem to remember back in NT 4.0 I could install a loopback adapter so that
there was an active network connection without having to actually put the
server on the network.

Is there a similar thing in 2003?

On a laptop? I didn't think you could do that. Or is that just Dynamic Disks?

Yep, that's my understanding too; I won't be able to test and configure
dynamic disks. But other than that I installed it just fine.

it's still available under XP (MS loopback adapter)and in 2003 but then
wouldn't it be wiser to run 2003 in a VM? if you are preping for a test you
can download the 30 day eval of vmware and give it a whirl. Install Xp on
the laptop, then create a VM that has 2003 on it (could even make it a
domain controller if you like - but then login is a little tricky if you
join the XP box to that domain <grin>)

Tricky? Yeah, I ended up doing a dual boot just because of that. So I've
got the dual boot xp & 2003 and vm running in 2003 with an XP setup and 2
other Server setups. Seems to work very well.

Why not?

With Virtual PC, I had 2003 Server, 2K server, 2K Pro, WinXP and Debian
all running on my Dull Uninspiron.

I don't know. I never tried it. I just heard somewhere that Windows Server
wouldn't install on a laptop but a might of had that confused with Dynamic
Disks.
