    - Group Policy I had a fun time figuring out something to do with Group Policy the other day, and one of the reasons for that was tools included with Windows not giving the correct output, namely gpresult.exe and RSoP. I came across a question that asked how to implement changing password and lockout policies for a subset of users in a doman. I thought hmmm group policy order of application would let me create an OU and assign a GPO to it, overriding the Default Domain Group Policy. When I found out I was wrong, and the book said modify the Default Domain Policy I thought EHHH the book is wrong, which I usually do :) and set out to try it for myself. Turns out, as you probably know, that the book was right, and nowhere could I find in the Help & Support documentation that there was an exception for password policies when it came to the domain policy. Even the Microsoft tools gpresult.exe and RSoP said that my OU GPO had taken preference but this was not the case! Eventually I found it on a page called "Account and local policies" in Help & Support. It seems there are certain attributes of the domain object that are applied domain-wide: lockOutObservationWindow lockoutDuration lockoutThreshold maxPwdAge minPwdAge minPwdLength and pwd-Properties I found by experimenting that these can sort of be controlled through a security permission on the domain object called "Read Domain Password & Lockout Policies". Denying this permission on a user had pretty interesting results though, it ended up giving me an error saying that the password could not be changed due to not longer than 0 days old, 0 previous passwords and not longer than 0 length! (my OU group policy settings "0, 0, 0" but the actual domain policy was still being "enforced" and not letting me change it). For someone who is used to Group Policy this exeption may seem trivial but for someone learning it took me a while to get around this, all because it was hard to find the information and the server tools gave me incorrect answers. Any idea why gpresult.exe and RSoP don't take into account this domain security setting and report Group Policy results correctly?     - MCNGP or not to MCNGP? I'm looking at the MCNGP Site contemplating registration and I figured I'd answer some of these questions first. But I'd like the opinions of some of you more experienced MCNGPs in the group as to whether I should actually register or not. MCNGP Requirements: 1.. Must be able to prove proficiency in network design implementation and management. --Shouldn't be a problem, I've been a Network Admin since NT 4.0, I'm working on my MCSA/MCSE now to actually prove the proficiency. 2.. Must excel in OS installation methods, performance tweaking and troubleshooting. --Again, shouldn't be a problem, built computers and networks long before I became a Net Admin. Built all of my own computers, except for that first Compaq, had to REbuild that one after I took it apart. 3.. Must frequent microsoft.public.cert.exam.mcse and provide a proven track record of technically competent posts. --Doing this now. It's a real friggin experience. 4.. Must demonstrate posting skills both defensive and offensively. --Hope I've done a good enough job, if not, they'll get better, I've just gotta get used to y'all. And if you don't like my posts, you can fsck off and go read your sappy Harlequins 5.. Must know what Chalk's term is and must have used it at least twice in it's pure form. --I know what it is, but for fear of letting the secret out to the a.z.z.f.u.s.k.e.r.s that claim to be outsmarting the system by taking br@indumps and cheat exams, I'm not going to blurt it out. 6.. Must have excellent knowledge of Kerpalism. --Kerpal was a wise man, I remember this time my daughter went to his house and kicked the kr@p out of his dog. Funny story, I'll have to tell it some day. 7.. Must be willing to stand beside your fellow MCNGP's. --Beside, behind, or in front of, intelligence and arrogance prevail. Proficiency in the following areas: 1.. Enterprise solutions. --It's just Small Business solutions right now. But to quote a great Jefferson...."We're mooovin' on up...." 2.. Operating Systems other then (<---Tell the friggin webmaster to fix the typo, it's "THAN") and as well as MS. --Ok, sorry, hardcore MS user here. I took too many courses in college that forced me to work on UNIX/LINUX systems. Worst experience in my life. Not that it was difficult, just slow and boring. Worked with X-Windows a little, just not the same. And those MACs scuk...who the h3ll would design a mouse with 1 click function?!?! Although the MAC graphics, for pictures and video, were far superior to MS, I still prefer MS's functions. 3.. Proper use and misuse, when appropriate, of the English language. --I think you all know my view of the English language by now. 4.. Newsgroup Flaming Techniques. --If I haven't, I will, be sure of that. 5.. Belittling those whose skill set is far beneath their own, in a tactful and professional manner. --Ha! I once told a guy to go to h3ll in such a polite way, that I was also able to get him to bring me back a cup of coffee when he returned. 6..     - GPO Problems I have created a Group Policy to force IE settings to use autodetect everything works fine if the GPO do not containt any folder redirection. I noticed that when I add Start Menu folder redirection to a network path. the redirection works, autodetect proxy, in IE is set; but Internet Explorer seems to don't get any information about the wpad record.     - Reality Check info Hi I got a bachelor in Management Information System in 1988. Following that, I got a MBA and followed doctoral studies in unrelated fields (international management and political sciences). Since 1990 and up to very recently, I worked both as university teacher and international consultant in management. During all these years, I not only closely followed technology changes and self-trained myself to security, network, server deployment, vpn, backup strategies, cms deployment, etc, but also regularly made few bucks with small IT consultation contracts. I've also been the part-time IT administrator of a small daycare for the last two years. I always learned fast and by myself. It's almost a trademark for me. I am looking for a career change. I'm fed up with teaching. Although I am considered a "computer wizard" by many, the IT jobs I seek unfortunately require more than "self-learning" abilities but real formal certifications like MSCE. I want that certification. As I understand it, I just have to self-study material at home and schedule exams with PearsonVue to a local test center for a total cost of 750$ (6x150$) to get the certification. Considering that I am already familiar with significant parts of the examen content, that I can have free access to most self-training materials and that I have strong abilities learning by myself: 1) do you believe self-learning is sufficent to get the certification? 2) what timeframe would be realistic to complete the certification? (my guess is between 6 months at best and a year at worst) 3) Will the certification be automatically granted at the end of the sixth exam or are there additionnal conditions/procedures to be followed? Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge with me. I spent some time reading MS webpages about certifications but some wordings and informations are more confusing than enlightening. BUT, I'm just a college student, who's only experience with Active Directory is beta testing Windows Server 2003 R2 last year. This would be typical of someone who munged their way through their MCSE, or didn't have the experience to back up the paper. Simply put, some people can pass the tests (with or without the use of br@indumps) but that doesn't mean they are qualified to do the work. Now, I realize that this person may not be a MCSE or even a MCP. But, it's still typical of someone who doesn't know their head from their A$$ and has a piece of paper claiming that they do. So, lowdes and the rest of your fan-club. Tell me this. What is a site? How is it used? And how should the poster incorporate it into their large enterprise? If you can answer those questions, and provide proof to back up your answers, then I'll leave you alone. If not, then you may want to slither off under a different rock. I've been working in IT for over 5 yrs now mostly in Sys Admin Roles.
Over the xmas period i decided to do the MCSE (Like yourselves:-)

I did the 290 exam & passed within 2 weeks of studying for it.
Now i only get 700 points, which isnt bad considering i never took an Exam &
i wasnt fully prepared for it..

But out of the last 3 Core Exams, which is the hardest?

I'm planning on taking 291 in the next 2 weeks
&
294 in the 2nd week in march.

Which Core Exams did you find hardest?

Gavin, i recommend to you study much more for the 70-291, i think that its
the more difficult.... really i think that 2 weeks is lower time...

remember that for MCSA you must do 70-270... the easiest... the client xp
prof and some product exam too...
