    - MCSE in Windows 2003: Security road from here Hi. Yesterday I passed 70-292 exam so, as I had passed before 70-210, 70-215, 70-216 and 70, 218, I'm now MCSA in Windows 2000 and in Windows 2003. My objective is the MCSE in Windows 2003 with speciality in Security. So, being MCSA in Windows 2003, what now? How much to go? 2, 3 more? Which ones could they be? How many â??coreâ?? and how many â??electiveâ??? The next exam I want to sit for is CompTIA Security+. In my opinion, this exam has its own importance, apart from the possibility of being used as requisite to MCSE, so passing it would give me at the same time â??a piece of the MCSEâ?? and a 3rd party recognized certification. Speaking about Security+â?¦what exact impact does this exam have in the â??pathâ?? I need to accomplish my objective? Is it consider â??electiveâ???     - Validating my coures material I've recently started to undertake the MCSE 2003. I believe the material which i have been sent is out-of-date. I looked at the MCSE self study guide on amazon that has a release date of May 06 updated with SP1. I recieved my material only last year and contains references to SUS instead of WSUS and so on...     - UPGRADE FROM 2000 TO 2003 Dear experts. I have a windows 2000 domain running on my network with 2 DCs and I want to migrate to 2003. I have tried to run adprep /forestprep and /domainprep on the schema master which is also the infrastructure master and both have finished correctly (no errors). Now the schema should have changed and I have tried to join the domain with a new 2003 server, but it aswers "The active directory cannot continue because the forest is not prepared. I can't see it listed on the Microsoft exam specifications, but the Transcender tests that I've been doing have that and RRAS questions all over the place.     - OT: Cluser of the Day There's not a whole lot an end-user can do anymore to stump me. Today my boss is handling tech support. One of our clients is having trouble with payroll direct deposit. She says the bank is rejecting her file. She forwards the file to my boss and he looks at it in notepad. It's just a flat text file, but with fixed-length records. He notices that nearly all of the records are for some reason enclosed in quotation marks at the beginning and ending of each record. That definitely would be a problem, but how in the hell did they get there? The clue was to scroll to the end of the file. The standard format requires that the "block" size be such that any empty records to complete a block at the end of the file be filled with nines. While the majority of the records were enclosed in quotes, the final few nines records were shown as "99e+45" I told my boss "Uh, she opened the file with a spreadsheet, then saved it, over-writing the existing file." "No way." "Way." Sure enough, after calling her back, that's exactly what she did. No backup either. In 25 years, users haven't changed much.     - Upgrade exams I qualified on Windows 2000 several years ago, I work for a fairly small software company which hasn't upgraded to 2003. I have to pass the upgrade exams to 2003 before they retire at the end of March because if I don't there's no upgrade route to the 2008 qualifications so I'd have to start from scratch. I know the upgrades have been around for a while now but I think it's far better to actually be working with the technology and have some hands on experience before taking the tests in fact Microsoft themselves advocate this but have made it impossible for me by withdrawing the upgrade and forcing me to become effectively a "paper" MCSE on 2003!     - user limits on a share OK...this should be easy... When you share a folder windows asks for the max number of user allowed to access it, max allowed or a specific number - which has a max of 10. (So i assume max allowed is 10). At one time I thought I knew that a 'user' was not actually a one-to-one maping to a user, but a connection, and a user could have more than one connection to a share, hence the share limit got used up sooner than expected based on number of physical users accessing it (does that make sense?). So...how can I determine the current number of users (connections) using a particular share and eating into my 10 user limit?     - Revolution 1309 Here's one for all you aspiring mcse's. Test you knowledge and solve my problem all at the same time :). The setup: User has an AD network and runs a vb6 program that is installed locally on each workstation but uses a common folder on the server to share an access database. Point here is that the program is not a client-server program. Users server dies. User calls tech guy, he replaces sever with a shiny new 2003 standard server. Tech guy somehow restores everything and things are back to normal. The problem: User runs vb6 app from workstations and gets no less than 63 errors like: Microsoft Access 2000 SR-1 Runtime Error 1309. Error reading from file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ART\Pfiles\MSOffice\Office\MSO7FTP.EXE Cancel|Retry|Ignore This is repeated with a different file 63 times. If the user cancels it goes away after three times. Then a message says: Wait while Runtime Configures. The vb6 app then runs normally after all this. The kicker: The user and tech guy swear on a stack of mcse training material that the workstations were not touched, only the sever was replaced. What I know: That 2003 comes out-the-box locked down pretty tight. That the 1309 error seems to be a Microsoft Installer error and is no doubt (in my mind) related to that stupid (in my mind) just in time installation stuff. So the vb6 program touches an access databse, windows things components are missing, yadda, yadda. What I don't know: How, why, where the AD was restored, if from backup or from scratch. How our vb6 app was put back on the server, by backup or install. How competent the tech guy is.
