P.S I'm certified MCSE in Windows2000 and NT4.
Thanks for your answers.

Understanding the DHCP Server Client conversation (very intresting subject)
Dear Friends,
Through my researches and my studies I tried to understand the DHCP Server
client conversation in Windows Server 2003 environment and I'm little bit
lost here.
Now, According to this table that is listed on Microsoft web page
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/169289
Source Dest Source Dest
Packet
MAC addr MAC addr IP addr IP addr
Description
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Client Broadcast 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 DHCP
Discover
* DHCPsrvr Broadcast DHCPsrvr 255.255.255.255 DHCP Offer
Client Broadcast 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 DHCP
Request
** DHCPsrvr Broadcast DHCPsrvr 255.255.255.255 DHCP ACK
I have some questions regarding the DHCP conversation manner.
The DHCP server sends a Broadcast MSG offering the IP address to the client
(*) and at the end it sends AGAIN a Broadcast MSG to acknowledge the IP
address that's been offered (**).
Now, my questions are :-
1) I understand that the Client is sending a broadcast message because it
doesn't know any concrete DHCP server in order to request an IP address, but
why the DHCP sends also a broadcast message to the client (*) (**)?
2) Let's agree that the DHCP server is broadcasting its offer, what happen
if there is more than one client (lets say 50 or more) is getting same IP
address that's suppose to be offered to a concrete client at the same time?
Doesn't this make a high traffic in the network making all the clients go
back and forth with the DHCPNACK, DHCPDECLINE and the DHCPACK?????
NOTE: I understand that the client sends an ARP request with the offered
IP address if it gets a reply that means that this IP address is in use and
the client sends DHCPDECLINE, this is from the CLIENT side but what about
the server side and the whole network?? :-s
3) Why don't the DHCP server cuts the crap and use the client MAC address to
send the DHCPOFFER and the DHCPACK instate of broadcasting to all clients?
PLEASE NOTE : That the MAC address is in the second layer (Data Link layer)
in the OSI model while the IP address is in the third layer (Network layer)
which make it more reasonable for the DHCP server to use the the MAC address
of the client that is requesting the service to send him the IP address
instate of BROADCASTING the DHCPOFFER and the DHCPACK and making high
traffic.
I'm sorry for make it long but I think that the subject is worth it....

New to the field
I am 34 years old and have decided to make a career change from sales (which
I have been in for over 10 years). I have enjoyed working with computers for
over 17 years and should of made this decision a long time ago. I am taking
courses with a company called New Horizons to work toward my MCSE 2003 certs.
In this program I do get hands on experience and will be placed in an
internship within the next month. If everything goes well I will have
completed all my exams within the next 10 months. Just wanting to see if
anyone has any suggestions or guidance that they can give me concerning the
field. Tag: Allitcertkiller.com exams now more cheaper than Testking.co.uk exams Tag: 219398
Another MCSE 2003
I passed my last MCSE exam on Feb 1st. It took me a year to finish the last 5
exams and three years in total to get to the MCSE. I work as a Network
Administrator and I knew nothing about installing servers, installing
Exchange, GPOs, AD, DNS, DHCP, etc. I had an opportunity to set this all up
from the ground up at my job. I had no plan but I had a lot of preparation
guides, installation guides, design guides, etc that I download and read from
Microsoft. My employer paid for one course which was for the 70-294 exam and
that exam I took a year later! I was too busy setting up the network. In
short, I earned my stripes getting the MCSE even though I didn't use every
technology covered on each exam (i.e Remote Access, VPNs, etc) but I tried my
best with Vmware to recreate the environment for learning. My question is
this, I want to move ahead into the systems architecture field and do more
intermediate systems work. Any advise on the best way to go about that? I
want to certify for Exchange 2007 and get a head start on Windows Server 08
as well. Tag: Allitcertkiller.com exams now more cheaper than Testking.co.uk exams Tag: 219392
Simulation questions
I just barely failed 70-292, and the post mortem indicated that I did the
worst in Managing Name Resolution, an area I know well given that it's been
one of my main responsibilities for the last 6 years. There were a number of
simulations in that section, and I'm wondering if that's where I went wrong.
How precise do you have to be to be marked correct on simulations? On one
of them I remember pressing OK when I was done, but got no feedback from the
interface that I had done anything, so I assumed that it did nothing and did
not do it again. Was that a costly mistake? How picky are these simulations?
Thanks. Tag: Allitcertkiller.com exams now more cheaper than Testking.co.uk exams Tag: 219390

OT: Webex replacements
I know this is a little more than slightly off topic, but maybe some of you
can help me.
I am looking for a replacement to webex. We use webex for remote customer
support, and it's a great tool no doubt, but it's expensive as all get out.
We have looked at and played with gotomypc, and logmein, however those
products require extensive local installation, something that many of our
customers object to (HIPAA concerns with their local IT staffs).
Ideally, a product should have the following properties...
full remote (secure) client control over the web
a meeting center
voice as well as web conferencing
file transfer ability
some type of payment portal (paypal or others)
be easy to connect to via the Internet yet secure
should pay us instead of us paying them
Ok, the last one is a bit of a stretch, I can bend on that :)
I am just looking for suggestions, maybe some of you have been in this boat
before.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions you might offer.

MCSE 2003 Exams, Work Experience Prerequisites , a challenge for s
Hello,
I have some 4 years working experience in Computing, starting from static
web designing and now systems Admin. I am getting ready to study for the MCSE
exams on server 2003. One thing that marvels me is the work experience
Prerequisites.
Quote: "The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) on Windows Server
2003 credential is intended for IT professionals who work in the typically
complex computing environment of medium to large companies. An MCSE candidate
should have at least one year of experience implementing and administering a
network operating system in environments that have the following
characteristics:
â?¢ 250 to 5,000 or more users
â?¢ Three or more physical locations
â?¢ Three or more domain controllers
â?¢ Network services and resources such as messaging, database, file and
print, proxy server, firewall, Internet, intranet, remote access, and client
computer management
â?¢ Connectivity requirements such as connecting branch offices and
individual users in remote locations to the corporate network and connecting
corporate networks to the Internet
In addition, an MCSE candidate should have at least one year of experience
in the following areas:
â?¢ Designing a network infrastructure
â?¢ Implementing and administering a desktop operating system"
I am from Ghana in West Africa and I currently work in Liberia in the same
region. It is very difficult to even find companies with 150 computers. Does
it mean that some of use who have not even worked for such companies have no
chance of getting certified? I just want to know..

MCSE 2000 to 2003 upgrade path. What happens when 2000 is retired?
Right now I am trying to get 70-292 and 70-296 done before March 31st so I
can upgrade to my MSCE to 2003.
I have the 70-292 exam scheduled for next Tuesday.
I hope to pass and start right on to studying 70-296 and complete that test
by the March 31st deadline.
What do you think will happen if I cant complete 70-296 by March 31st.
70-292 and 70-296 will be retired and discontinued on March 31st.
Do you think I will be able to still upgrade with the non-retired core exams
that make up 70-296,(293 and 294)?
If I schedule 70-296 and fail it before the 31st do you think I will be

MCSE in Windows 2003: Security road from here
Hi.
Yesterday I passed 70-292 exam so, as I had passed before 70-210, 70-215,
70-216 and 70, 218, I'm now MCSA in Windows 2000 and in Windows 2003.
My objective is the MCSE in Windows 2003 with speciality in Security. So,
being MCSA in Windows 2003, what now? How much to go? 2, 3 more? Which ones
could they be? How many â??coreâ?? and how many â??electiveâ???
The next exam I want to sit for is CompTIA Security+. In my opinion, this
exam has its own importance, apart from the possibility of being used as
requisite to MCSE, so passing it would give me at the same time â??a piece of
the MCSEâ?? and a 3rd party recognized certification.
Speaking about Security+â?¦what exact impact does this exam have in the â??pathâ??
I need to accomplish my objective? Is it consider â??electiveâ???
Honestly, I tried to understand the CertPlanner, but I just donâ??t get how to
figure out easily the options I have to achieve my goal.
Thanks!!!
Carlos Tapia.

UPGRADE FROM 2000 TO 2003
Dear experts.
I have a windows 2000 domain running on my network with 2 DCs and I want to
migrate to 2003.
I have tried to run adprep /forestprep and /domainprep on the schema master
which is also the infrastructure master and both have finished correctly (no
errors).
Now the schema should have changed and I have tried to join the domain with
a new 2003 server, but it aswers "The active directory cannot continue
because the forest is not prepared. Use adprep to fix it".
I already did that and if I try it again, the system tells....it was already
done.
Do you have any suggestion?

I can't see it listed on the Microsoft exam specifications, but the

Tech Career Advice
A couple of articles landed in my inbox today that are interesting
reads. Being as the topic of career advice comes up in these groups,
here is something to mull over:
First of all, is something everyone should consider before starting out
on those exams because you think you want to become an IT person: "10
signs that you aren?t cut out to be a support tech"
Of course if I was to follow their advice I would have never started.
Then again, when I first started out the enthusiasm for helping people
was not beaten out of me yet.

Then "10 things you should know about creating a resume for a high-level
IT position"
http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/10things/?p=195
Most interesting is the first point: "Don't list certification exams--or
at least minimize the impact of this list. The average IT pro might want
to list exams passed to build up a resume, but it marginalizes the real-
world experience and accomplishments of a veteran IT pro."

OT: Cluser of the Day
There's not a whole lot an end-user can do anymore to stump me.
Today my boss is handling tech support. One of our clients is having
trouble with payroll direct deposit. She says the bank is rejecting her
file. She forwards the file to my boss and he looks at it in notepad. It's
just a flat text file, but with fixed-length records. He notices that
nearly all of the records are for some reason enclosed in quotation marks at
the beginning and ending of each record. That definitely would be a
problem, but how in the hell did they get there?
The clue was to scroll to the end of the file. The standard format requires
that the "block" size be such that any empty records to complete a block at
the end of the file be filled with nines. While the majority of the records
were enclosed in quotes, the final few nines records were shown as "99e+45"
I told my boss "Uh, she opened the file with a spreadsheet, then saved it,
over-writing the existing file."
"No way."
"Way."
Sure enough, after calling her back, that's exactly what she did. No backup
either. In 25 years, users haven't changed much.
