Subnetting Problem Contd
Two days ago I posted the follwing question from the MS
Trng Kit for 70-216. I received several responses but none
that really explained why the answer to the question was
selection 'd.'
So, I lined out in binary form all of the eight IP
addresses. It turns out that the 'd' answer that changes
the subnet mask to 0/21 isolates the right most 3 bits of
the 3rd octet.
With the 0/21 mask there are two nets using 24 and 30 in
the second octet. Then the host addresses are changed by
one in the third octet.
But, the question remains, why does this make the routing
tables simpler for the router?
Interesting problem, don't you love that MS does not give
an explanation.

Problem signing up for the MCP NewsFlash
Has anyone else run into problems signing up for the MCP NewsFlash? I
can check the box, and then I get this message:

However, if all of the selections you made are not reflected below, it

And.. then the MCP NewsFlash box is no longer checked. I can

I posted this message to an XP newsgroup, but surprisingly I didn't get a
good response. it really is a simple question. ok here it goes:
how can we use RD with only 2 computers? say we have a computer at home
(workstation) with XP on it (NOT member of ANY domain, just a plain old
stand alone computer), and we have a laptop with XP also. ok, now I want to
connect from my laptop -with DIALUP- to my PC at home with RD. is this
possible? if possible, how do you configure the home PC to 'answer' the
call? and how do you configure the laptop to 'call'?

If I understand correctly, a MCP (Microsoft Certified
Professional) specializes in one module that makes up the
MCSE or passed one of the modules such as Networking. Is

I've set up a Windows 2000 environment with 20

setup and configured a Windows 2003 environment with 7

Hello:
I readed several posts about 70-219. I have no very clear how it is. I
notice it is scenario based, but I do not know how many questions/scenarios
it have.
I passed 218 last week, I prefer the old status, not in particular the
points, but the percent in each theme I believe that is very helpfull as

MCSE status
Hello all,
I've been out of work the last 2 years due to an
accident I was in and haven't been in touch the
certification scene lately.
My question is I became a MCSE in Windows NT 4.0 back in
July of 1998 and was cusious if I'm still an MCSE or has
the NT4 MCSEs' been retired?
Also I am getting ready to enter the job market again
soon, Lord willing and recently passed W2K Pro and Svr
exams. Since I was or still maybe an MCSE, am I suppose
to recieve a welcome kit from Microsoft since passing the
first W2K test? I'm thinking I should have a new MCP
status for Windows 2000 Professional, is this correct?

Yesterday I passed 70-219 and much to my supprise it showed me my score, not
just pass/fail. I have taken 6 tests (failed 216 the 1st time) and none have

You have to think like Microsoft
I've been installing/maintaining Microsoft server/client environments 6+
years. Although I'm just starting to take the tests for the MCSE, I thought
I could take the tests with minimal studying.
I failed the 70-270 test the first time (The Exam Cram 2 book is worthless
and I hate that they don't tell you what your score was, but that is a
different post all together), passed the test the second time. The key,
besides understanding the material, is that you need to think like
Microsoft.
I found myself answering the questions with answers that weren't options.
Like in the 70-216 sample question I have a scenario where the 2 of the 3
network segments can't get IP addresses through the router.
Being a Cisco guy, I say, heck configure the router with DHCP relay and then
they will get the info from the DHCP just fine. That's not an option in the
answers, Microsoft wants you to use Microsoft, so you install the relay
agent on each of the segments that is not getting their DHCP and yada, yada,
yada.
Know the material, hands on, reading (because hands on doesn't always give
you Microsoft's preferred way) and THINK like Microsoft! That's just my

net use and dos printing across domains
I've got an archaic piece of dos software that does not print correctly from
win2000 or winXP. To resolve the problem I use the following command:
net use lpt1: \\computername\printername /persistent:yes
This works perfectly, except when attempting to access resources in another
domain. To access the domain, I would normally have to provide a username
and password; however, net use only asks for a password. Obviously this gets
me nowhere, regardless of the password provided. How would I resolve this
problem?

Drive Capacity
Has anyone ever seen the case where the disk capacity doesn't match the disk
usage?
We have a 9GB drive. It says the Free space is down to 23 MB. When I
highlight all of the files and do a properties, it says it is 5 GB. We
apparently have 4GB of space just not showing up. I have set it to view
hidden files as well as hidden operating system files.
Anybody seen this before or have any suggestions.

Free Beta exams offered to NT4 MCSEs?
Ok did anyone else get an email recently (maybe up to a
month or so ago) offering some free beta tests to upgrade
your cert from NT4 MCSE to 2003? If so can you share the
info - seems I remember getting this mail but it got
grabbed by the spam folder and was deleted before I could
do more looking into it... Had some 2k certed friends say
they never got the offer, so I think it was just for us NT4
certed folks who have been too busy to ever go to 2000. Any
help would be appriciated -- I've searched the Train/Cert

I intend to take 70-210 exam in a weeks time. I have been

What's in it for me? MCSA/E Certification
I've been looking into various ways to study for an MCSA leading to an
MCSE having grown weary of reading the MS self study book for 70-210.
I'm considering whether it'll benefit me enough to warrant me investing
some money in courses.
Could a few people let me know what kind of prospects having MCSA or MCSE
certification will yield for me? Honest answers only please, as if I want
blurb I'll read the MS site about it.
